My mom restricts me from playing online games or talking to people online when I was younger. Since I got my own phone, I never really told her that I play online games and shit cuz I'm afraid she'd take my phone away

She just use the excuse "there's so many creeps online" type shit which is not exactly wrong but yeah you get the point

That was literally my case and also the exact same excuse, which you know besides being overprotective doesn't even stop the kid from just playing online games silently, he just won't tell you about it (and too neglectful/not technologically literate enough to do something about it, as Bluewyne said in the thread). Instead it's just like you penalize the kid for socializing (which if he's spending most of his time in-doors, it wouldn't hurt in my opinion) and make him more unable to interact with others.

Kids aren't completely dumb, if you tell them not to share X and explain why in detail, then likely they're going to be happy you allow them to talk to others and make friends, and choose to avoid giving personal detail (which also was the norm in the old net, unfortunately nowadays it's the opposite). And worst case scenario, I'd consider online shitflinging at oneself for the first time to be a rite of passage. One can learn as much, if not more from bad experiences than from good ones, contrast is very much needed.

Though technically, i'd consider that kids shouldn't be subjected to the Internet too early, if he can be motivated instead to get outdoors because, well, he's going to have to get out eventually and if he never did, he's going to struggle ten times more than any other average person once he'll have to get a job for the first time or move out. If he can't be motivated to go outside, well I guess the Internet is not a too bad option (at least back in the day).

I suppose that at least it made some people able to live through the old net younger and created more unique memories for them, and that I can approve of.

When I turned 13, I would ask my parents if I could join x forum or y forum or z forum and every time they would say no. Eventually I got fed up with it, made my own e-mail and just started signing up on websites without informing them. I was a well-behaved kid, so my parents never had any need to spy on what I was doing on the computer.

As for playing games online, just do it anyways without telling them lol. I don't think most parents are tech literate enough to realize whether a game is online or not. If talking to strangers in a voice chat is an issue, maybe just use headphones and only type in chat.

Yeah, same. I think it's kind of an inevitable transition to realize "I know what they're saying/choosing is unfounded, i don't want to be completely alone, and they won't listen to what I have to say. Then if I don't tell them i risk nothing at all, so why not do it?"

I don't understand how can parents not try to actually learn about the thing they want to restrict instead of doing so blindly, maybe then it'd prevent dumb decisions from being made (which turn out useless because the kid will find a way to circumvent it most of the time). If anything I'd say I learned much more about everything ever from the Internet and interacting with others than from my own parents even remotely.

Also I'm pretty sure my first proper PC online experience was with...Roblox, of all things. But in 2006, back when it was fresh new and therefore free of anything regarding the latest scandals.

Only games with subscription to pay (aka MMOs) were definitely off limits since I didn't had any pre-paid card at the times. So no FF XI, which could have been the only one I was slightly interested.

It's not that I wasn't allowed to play them, I wasn't allowed to download ANYTHING by myself because we only had one computed that my dad also used to work in, so he was super scared that I might download a virus by accident and destroy his (at the time) kinda expensive work computer. Basically I was restricted to browse only games, like flash games. Eventually I started playing Club Penguin and became obssesed with the social aspect, plus it was also a flash browser only game so it was good to go for me

Paid MMOs were a whole entire beast entirely. My parents back then would never pay for anything online because "its a scam". So I was stuck either playing free versions of games without membership (ex. Runescape) or never playing a sub-based MMORPG.

I could play online but not with a mic until the age of like 16, the amount of one sided shit talk I had to take in MW2 lobbies was off the charts. Definitely helped me become a much calmer person when met with confrontation though.

I didn't have actual good internet till I was about 16. Once in awhile I'd go over to my dad's house and was able to get some early youtube and ps3 online play. My parents did get some extremely cheap internet at one point. We are talking barely 1MB per second. But I did play alot of black ops 1 with that internet. I ended up having to master the lag just to get some enjoyment

But once I hit 16, my stepfather came out of nowhere with some good Verizon internet. After that I was able to play online with no lag whatsoever. The rest is history

My parents legit didn't care what I did as long as it didn't cost them money and I wasn't bothering them. I played games online but couldn't use voice (nor did I want to) because I didn't have a microphone which was probably for the best.

Quando eu tinha meu PS3, jogava com amigos que tinham microfone, mas eu não tinha. Não sei se isso conta.

Eu também já tive um PS3 só que era do meu irmão e depois que ele saiu de casa ele vendeu... maior decepção da minha infância. A gente tinha um CD LittleBigPlanet 2 que só eu jogava, um dos meus jogos preferidos e até hoje eu penso em comprar um PS3 e o CD de lbp2 só pra sentir como era jogar no ps3.

I never had an interest in online games as a kid, I was always a solo player.

Though looking back, my classmates were into Diablo II, and today I wish I had joined in. Even though, thinking about it, our stone age modem which took minutes to just load a website, likely couldn't run it.

We got a better line in my mid teens though, so no excuses I suppose.

Man, tu mora onde? dependendo da sua região tu pode achar na OLX ou FACEBOOK, eu comprei meus videogame por la usado, mas tipo, vai por voce sabe? tu não vai comprar um ideogame todo comido também né kkk , geralmente tem PS3 por 300,400,600 em "bom estado" só dar uma bisoiada que tu acha até ajudo se quiser KKKKKK foi mal a intrusão, só tentando ajudar um brother do PS3
