Who actually plays these games?

I didn't care for Double Dragon Revive, but I did like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game Remastered. It was really good... just an HD upscale, basically.

Still, take TMNT: Shredder's Revenge, which was actually a really fun revival of the old IP in 16-bit format. I can see where some older fans would want retro-style new games of a series they liked. A lot of people enjoy these kinds of games, myself included, just not so much as a Double Dragon fan.

Take The Ninja Saviors: Return of the Warriors, is an excellent remake of the old SNES game, with some QoL improvements. The SNES game was fun, but its controls like a stick in the mud. The remake is good and is again a remake of an old IP. However, these games aren't for everyone, and I can see someone younger not liking them.

Double Dragon Gaiden is surprisingly cool. Not amazing, but an interesting "roguelike beat-'em-up."

Out of the newer Double Dragons, I've only played Gaiden and I liked it well enough. The roguelike mechanics were pretty neat and me being a sucker for pixel art, I dug the graphics too.

While the remake controls even better, the SNES version does not control like a stick in the mud. That would be the arcade original. Which is more about timed hits than combos. I can switch between the SNES and Saviors/Once Again any time without much issue. The only problems I have with Once Again, are the removal of the scoring system, no boss rush, and two players have to share the same life bar if doing co-op. Otherwise, it is the better remake and much better than Wild Guns Reloaded.

You should’ve started the thread like that! 🫵
Sorry :(
I assumed people would understand the point of the thread. It's called these games and not these beat 'em ups for a reason.
Anyway, I'm happy to see how many people still play brawlers. I thought it was a dead genre.

. I thought it was a dead genre
Brawlers have been on the rise again since thebmid 2010s. With the new golden age that started in 2020 with Streets of Rage 4. So they haven't been dead in a long time. Though it it's not the pathetic AAA(A) that brought them back to life nor kept them alive, it was indie who keep making these classic style brawlers the majority of the time. Now we're getting more 3d brawlers modeled after Sifu, coming out either later this year or next year. Dead as Disco is now out on Steam.

And with stuff like He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction, Toxic Crusaders, Scott Pilgrim EX, and a few others I can't think of off the top of my head right now, retro-style games like these are far from dead

I know He-Man got delayed to this summer, and Toxic Crusaders got announced 4 years ago now. The release date is now this year, but no actual month or day still. I really do hope that games comes out, but I am more interested in He-Man at the moment, and Cosmic Invasion later. I saw the most recent trailer with the F4 and Cyclops.

I'm with you on He-Man. As for Toxic Avenger and Scott Pilgrim, eh... take'em or leave'em. I've never been a fan of the SPVTW series, and I like Toxic Avenger as a movie, to be honest. Cosmic Invasion was one of the others I was trying to think of that I'm looking forward to... I just couldn't remember the name off the top of my head. ::sailor-embarrassed

Scott Pilgrim I plain do not like from its setting, to most of the cast in any version. The art style for these a great, but I do not like the level structure in the first game, and I don't care for open world brawlers in general. I rather just play Kunio/RCG since that is the actual source of inspiration for the two SP games.

Well, I never gave the games a shot because I hate the Scott Pilgrim franchise as a whole. I dislike the story, hated the movie, and never got interested in the graphic novels they had. There was just something about it I didn't like and couldn't bring myself to get into.

For me, I used to like the movie and took some minor interests in the comics, but that stopped about a year after the film came out. Scott as a whole I do not like as a character, nor his friends or "friends". Honestly, even if Scott never existed or never involved with their lives, most of them would still be assholes, and I would not want hang with nearly any of them. The only characters I liked or found entertaining are Kim, Knives, and Neal. The problem with the comics at least, is that they go heavy on the 80s/90s video game references. I know this was a web comic from the mid 2000s, but that only makes it age worse and make it all the more apparent what era it is from, and how old the creator is.

It wasn't so much the game references, but I get what you mean. More likely, I don't think I was in the target demographic for it age wise, anyhow. It may have been more the art style that put me off and left a sour taste in my mouth as it where, making me dislike it.

I know people in my age range who went absolutely apeshit over anything related to the IP, and I gave them the same look some people give me when I talk about video games or anime... the "What is wrong with you?" look.

I didn't even know Scott Pilgrim existed until seeing a movie poster before the trailer came out. I know in my high school, pretty much no one knew about it as far as I knew, and I had a few friends in college that are fans of the comics. Them liking it was never an issue for me, even when I began disliking it.
