Which video game series changed your outlook on life?

Mine is Shin Megami Tensei. It all started with my playthrough of both SMT 2 on a zSNES emulator and SMT 3 Nocturne on my PS2. A mix between going through the guides and understanding the lore that was presented to me through wikis/forums/etc began. Man, what an amazing rabbit hole I went down and I have never been the same, but for the better. I don't recommend the old school versions from a gameplay point of view unless you're used to it or have found something more taxing to get through. Otherwise, the stories have been great and engaging no matter the route you take of the three (Law/Neutral/Chaos). This particular series challenged what I knew as a young man that grew up in an otherwise Christian household. It opened my mind so much to other cultures with their religions and all the mythos and cryptids that followed as well as esoteric knowledge. I find it all so fascinating and it plays a big part of my life.

Yes, the Persona series are included as they are a spin-off after all. Moreso Persona 2 and 3 due to their respective stories and how they actually connect. The rest in the spin-off are just as great, I just have a personal connection to the aforementioned. Those games hit me in a special way, realizing that not everybody has it all together and are doing their best with what they have/were given. Friendships and connections go a long way so long as it's maintained well instead of forced. I can go on :P but please, I'd like to know everyone else's!

Sorry for being basic. Final Fantasy 7 is so well written that flares my Climate Change anxieties to even higher highs,
In a less basic note, the Gothic PC game series is great, and does have a lot to say on Society

That’s an interesting philosophical question. My answers would be GTA, Persona and Dead Rising. Definitely Yakuza too, and Danganronpa to some extent. Shoutout to Phoenix Wright also.

Cave Story I guess? idk why exactly, the story is simple but it stuck with me for a long time. The game's atmosphere felt special to me as well. Just a overall very melancholic affair that I had not really ever encountered before. I guess you could say I wasn't used to games trying to get any kind of emotional reaction out of you other than "this is fun". This probably isn't a very good explanation but it's all I got

A few years ago I played through Planet Laika. It's a extremely weird but also philosophical game, and when I finished it I really felt like I had become different for a short while, or like I had stepped in a new reality... but it lasted maybe two days. I couldn't even tell you exactly what the game's about at this point, just that it was interesting.

I have! I'm actually surprised they never did more with that story. That world. Even coming upon a remaster. But of course, many would recognize Raidou and The Demi Fiend over the Embryon. I still listen to the soundtrack. The Muladhara theme encapsulates the area as well as the root chakra when you come to understand it.

Nothing basic about it man. It was monolithic for it's time and the story has lasted for a long time and still will. Especially in times like these. Interestingly, it's the prototype to Xenogears before Xenogears became its own masterpiece. GOTHIC needs to be talked about just as much. The story of the first game is very interesting!

I remember watching my brother play that game, I believe there was something tragic about involving a werewolf? IF I recall correctly of course. Also interesting due to you going around the actual world that we live in, but in a well developed video game.

Those are some great game series that gave a lot to the gaming community as well as individual gamers in their lives. First Yakuza game I played was 3, and after hours of beating ass...I see the man cry and it genuinely brought myself to tears like this

if its about life, i have story from Dragon's Dogma, the first one.
at the time, my game studio which i own, had problem with two of my team suddenly have their own game, and decide to explore it themselves, all while we are in chaotic situation with publisher. the work is failed, the game is shut down, the team reduced to me and my co founder. i was so desperate, and not getting out from home nearly one month.

then i'm stumbled upon dragon's dogma dark arisen.

it was so immersive, it's like i went into other world, got some friends (NPC and Pawn, they are so alive and immersive), struggling with lot of possibilities the game offers, and then save the world with help of my pawn. all aspect such as the music, the art, the gameplay, the system design, game design, all was so perfect in me.

then the game also gave me lot of life lessons. one of it is what the pawn randomly said :
"If victory is elusive, seek new allies. Where that fails, seek new foes"
it was so captivating me up to the point, i forgot my sadness after i replay it around two to three in one month.

aaand now my studio arisen once more since years ago, got much expanded since back then. one of it, thanks for dragon's dogma. i face the reali world with more face up than before.

dang, will repeat the first and dragons dogma 2 as well, soon. great game series 13/11 IMO.

Mother 3, i dont want to elaborate so much but is a game that came to me in the right moment of my life, also is one of my favorite RPG of all times and later inspire me to try more JRPGs like Chrono Trigger, the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest series, etc
