I think the first time I heard internet dial up tones, I thought I'd caused actual physical harm to the family PC.
I have visions of patting a big white monitor apologetically

that dial-up tone...
heh. yeah, i thought the same :)

That feeling of spending hours downloading something only for your mom to use the phone before it's done.
Cue the Darth Vader
Star Wars No GIF

I have a lot of nostalgia for the old internet, but there's no going back from dial-up. Although aside from the slow speed, the biggest annoyance of it tying up the phone line is also a non-issue in the cell phone age. Often all it took to stop me from hanging out with a couple of my good friends back then was for their mom's Everquest addiction to be active.

(Serious):
For those of you too young to remember or who never lived in a world with dial-up Internet
While I can't say I miss dial-up too much, this is still quite nostalgic.

Back when we were still Asking Jeeves...

There were some gold websites back in the day, like Purple Hell, for all your message ciphering and deciphering. Countless hours spent finding mirrors of websites that hosted Flash games that hadn't been blocked by school web filters....ahh, good times

First thing that always comes to mind for me when I think of dial-up is Quake and Jedi Outcast.

Speaking of old internet nostalgia, does anyone remember those old game freeware sites like Game Hippo and Acid Play? I discovered a bunch of stuff like Soldat and Gunz The Duel through them way back when.

Did you ever play Cyberjoueur Bomberman?

Ask Jeeves had character. Remember Inktomi?

Their logo is vaguely familiar to me, but can't say I ever used their search engine!
When I wasn't using software like Dance Ejay and Story Animator at school, I was mainly being exposed to new music and games online through friends and by throwing random searches at Google to see what stuck
