PC Which source port of Doom should I use to play the game?

What type of Doom experience are you looking for? Something more vanilla or are you wanting mod support?

I've always stuck with GZDoom, but I also can't claim to have ever investigated the options all that much after settling on it years ago. I'm used to it at this point and it works.

The Nightdive/Bethesda release DOOM 1+2 (Classic) will just work out of the box. I have experienced multiple crashes on this version, but it's constantly getting updates and improvements, and comes with a mod menu where you can add fan favourites (though not all are tested, so some might not work with your device).

The best option overall is probably GZDOOM on PC. I found it cumbersome to set up at first, and having to drag and drop .wad files instead of just selecting them from a menu is a hassle, but it's the most customisable and is otherwise brilliant.

Use HDOOM XD

I second this. Plays Doom, plays other games based on the Doom engine, plays all the mods I've ever wanted to play.

ZDL fixes that for the most part.

Im also on PC
In that case, I'd say GZDoom like everyone else here, as it's generally the most flexible and will play nearly anything you throw at it. It has a few deviations from vanilla behavior however, even with compatibility settings on strict.

If you're looking for something between vanilla and GZDoom, maybe try The Eternity Engine? It's similarly easy to use and can run a large number of WADs, while being slightly more accurate to vanilla.

I would say the Nightdive version on Steam, if it weren't for the crashes. Hoping they fix it soon.

Either GZDoom or the current Bethesda Source Port are the most accessible, and perfect ways to play. If you dont care about a 100% vanilla experience, go with those.

As others have said, either GZDoom or modern official ports. If you intend to run mods, GZDoom is where it is at.

Delta Touch for mobile, GZDoom for PC. If your PC doesn't play nice with GZDoom, use LZDoom.

Buy a vintage 486 from some hipster for the real experience

doom runs on a potato so one of the many ports should work - I like the GZdoom port because WADs (I think a 32 bit version exists too if you have an older PC)

It seems like it's been since forever where you could use the console to load mods and maps for Quake. I don't know why that hasn't been implemented in every Doom port yet since they all implemented consoles ages ago. Maybe I just don't know the commands. People kept telling me to drag and drop.

You are better off using a side loader like ZDL. It's much easier and more organized.
