Release/Production order. ESPECIALLY if you go for a restoration like 4K77 or the Despecialized Editions for the original trilogy. This way, you are introduced to various mysteries that are eventually answered in the Prequel trilogy, and you also see the evolution of the franchise's art style and special effects throughout the eras.

Besides, Disney and Lucasfilm will finally roll out the original cut of Star Wars next year after so long, so I think this order holds some weight behind it.

i hate how MUCH BACK AND FORTH star wars does.
I mean you COULD watch episode 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 it's not terrible but the "quality" change is massive lol
but it makes more sense that way, for those movies anyways.
Rogue one is watchable BEFORE 4 (it ends where ep4 starts)

so many cartoon series are "in between" and really idk where you can go with those
and the live action series disney+ brought in.
just watch them whenever in any order really.
so many of them are before episode 4 it's actually quite annoying to me lol.

this timeline of all VIDEO media of star wars is VERY much alot to follow if you care to watch ALL of star wars, good luck LOL
(bby= before battle of Yavin, aby = after)

I watched everything from the beginning up to Luke Skywalker's rise to power.

Pre-Disney, there was something known as the "Machete order." That is IV, V, II, III, VI... skip I..

I'll drop a source below, but the short version is to maximize the impact of Luke's story, and arguably the greatest plot twist in cinema history..

As far as the Disney "Star Wars"...

For me there’s only 6 Star Wars movies.

And I watched them all the way they’re released.

Nah, the Machete order is not worth it. It makes no sense to interrupt one story with the latter two acts of another.

It's funny to me that since the disney trilogy came out, people became much more accepting of episodes 1, 2 and 3.
As for a watch order, I'd go with the release order, but the problem with that one is that you'd have nowhere to go after finishing episode 3, so I suppose I can understand why people would come up with different ones.
Tartakovsky's clone wars was also pretty decent, so I would include that as well.
Just marathoning the original trilogy would be the cleanest approach though.

Release order.

The way we watched Star Wars originally was like a dream during the 70's.

We first watched New Hope, loved it and became obsessed with it as most kids of that time. If you had anything Star Wars related like a Star Wars lunchbox, that was the creme of the creme. We devoured everything Star Wars related at the time such as toys and action figures produced by Kenner, our favorite toy brand of that era. A star wars videogame was still unheard of but some things came out that were an echo of it.

This was my absolutely most wanted toy as a kid sometime after Star Wars came out but never got. It would be about 4 years before I'd ever see a real Star Wars video game. (Empire Strikes Back on Atari 2600)

There was also a sort of Star Wars 1.5 thing before Empire came out that we watched...that (drum roll) most infamous and universally panned Star Wars Holiday Special. Yes, everyone thinks it's bad but we liked it nonetheless being the Star Wars obsessed dumb kids we were but if anything else, try and watch the cartoon sequence showing the very first appearance of Boba Fett animated in that weird 70's cartoon art style noticeable in shows like the Sesame Street of that era.

On second thought, just watch it here. I noticed that most videos of the Star Wars Holiday Special in youtube seem to have cut that sequence of Chewbacca's son (and getting into trouble) watching the full length cartoon. In any case, it was the best part of the Holiday Special.

Empire came, watched it and tripled our Star Wars obsession to the max. Mainly speculating if there was anything behind the whole Darth Vader and Luke relationship. We even checked out Sci-fi magazines for possible clues. One theory we latched on was the one where Boba Fett was Luke's real father in disguise due to how convincing the magazine explained it but the less said of that, the better.

We also got into the Star Wars comic books produced by Marvel at the time. The comics was actually well written and the writers made an effort to bridge the gap between Empire and Return even it wasn't canon. In any case, it gave us the Star Wars fix for something in between the three years between Empire and Return's release. By the time the movie came out, Return felt like an episode of the comic rather than the other way around.

After Return, we were happy and content for a long time. The prequel movies felt...off. Sorry but I'm not a big fan of the prequel series.

I don't even want to think of Disney.

Exactly.. This, plus maintaining maximum emotional impact of episode V is the whole point of the Machete order..

Otherwise, I would just say Original Trilogy, and nothing more..

You must really hate Tarantino's movies, don't you?

The Star Wars Holiday Special followed by Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure and Ewoks: The Battle for Endor. Everything else doesn't matter and sucks.

Always release order tbh. I guess for rewatches you could watch in chronological order but IDK the prequels suck ass so just leaving them in the middle if I do watch all 8 films is better than having to slog through them at the start. At least in release order I'm going: pretty good, one of the best films in the franchise, a downgrade but still overall a good time, kinda bad, WOW this one sucks, an improvement over the last two but still below any of OT, okay so it's kinda just a nostalgic retread of the OG film but still decent enough and i get that they had to get people to care about star wars again cuz of how awful the prequels were, the OTHER one of the best films in the franchise.

Nothing happened after Episode VIII as fars as I'm concerned to be honest. Nothing. They still haven't made an Episode IX yet.
