Which game has the best story, in your opinion?

The ending of this game never fails to wreck me, thank you Itoi

Silent Hill 2, perfection in my eyes.

This had a huge impact on me because of the overall symbolism & how this was crafted into aspects of the environments & monsters, I enjoyed learning about the other characters along the way and piecing everything together, it was fun, made you question things thus can be further opened for interpretation/speculation.
The revelation at the end was excellent & to this day, for me, everything about this masterpiece in terms of a horror experience remains unmatched.

Mother 3 guy beat me to it lol. hm. Well I have a bias to Silent hill games and Rule of Rose. I feel 2000s horror games always hit different in pushing the medium for what stories could be told. RPGmaker game horrors too even if those are more within the early 2010s range often had great executed stories like Witch's House.

Final Fantasy VII has had the biggest impact on me. I don't think that makes it a 10/10 story, but then again, I don't know if I've seen one such story in games. I don't play too many story games any more, but sometimes I find one that sticks with me.

After years I still remember What remains of Edith Finch, and Unavowed, and Kathy Rain decently. Usually not the case. Xenogears was awesome; too bad about the translation.

I've gone in depth on this site about how much the game means to me, but Final Fantasy VI was a game that tore down a barrier between me and most other fiction when it comes to my emotional attachment to it. It was a serious, goofy, tragic, but hopeful story that helped me become a little more optimistic in life, at a time when i kind of stopped caring about everything. Its a story that taught me what life is about, and for that i hold it dearly.

Xenogears has one of the most ambitious stories ever told in a videogame, it's a shame the ran out of money by the end, they couldn't quite finish the second disk and the pacing of the story suffers quite a bit because of this, it's still a great game despite of this.
Terranimga on the other hand has one of my favorite narratives in video game history, It's not the best story ever told but it's presented in such a way that I find really compelling, the devs of that game really figured out how to make the player feel mystified and intrigued, the music adds a lot to the experience as well.

Let's see now, I'm going to list some of my favorite stories and story executions in games.

Dragon Quest V - DS version (maybe PS2 too haven't played that one yet) - The way it portrays the weight and passage of time is absolutely unlike any other game, we hadn't seen it before(tho Grim Fandango did come close), we haven't seen it so masterfully portrayed since. And thanks to the addition of party chat, the DS and PS2 versions have incredible character development and world building too. This is a game with exceptionally powerful moments about love, family, friendship bonds.

Terranigma - I care more about characters than basic plots tho, but in some cases the basic premise was so powerful I consider it among the best stories even if there wasn't much character development. That's Terranigma for me. Being all alone in a sleeping, dormant world and watching it slowly awaken is a once in a lifetime gaming experience, I doubt anyone could exectue it so well today.

Mother 3 - I played it when it first got fully translated and barely remember it anymore, but the atmosphere, powerful emotions, sense of awe that never left me throughut the game I remember well from beginning to end. It was strange, weird, surreal yet so emotionally powerful and gripping.
It's a story that's not afraid to explore many uncomfortable themes rather openly.

Clair Obscru - my best friend is going to hate me for this, but to me, E33 is one of the greatest, most powerful stories told in gaming. It's a story about unimaginable love and loss, family bonds and the meaning of life and sentience. It has some of the most easy to relate to and love characters I've ever seen in gaming, beautiful writing and voice acting. They felt like genuine, real people and...living beings I grew to love, adore, care about. We saw some seriously powerful moments in this one, facial expressions that showed so much love and pain.

Grim Fandango - Another masterpiece where the passage of time is presented wonderfully. Probably the only point and click style game I've played multiple times and still look forward to replaying again someday. From the offices with their weird computers to the casino, the city and the docks, it all felt so nostalgic, so familiar. The characters even tho you generally meet them for brief periods of time are so well written and acted, that you can't help but relate to them.
It genuinely makes you feel like you're experiencing the afterlife, I'm beyond fascinated with this one.

There's more but I'll leave it here for now

Seconded. One of my favorite works of sci-fi in any medium.

Also, since Silent Hill 2 is such a gimmie, I’ll put Shattered Memories out there.

Honorable mentions to The Witcher 3, that first Telltale Walking Dead game, Gone Home, and Tie Fighter.

There's some great stuff like Lost Odyssey, namely the short stories (dreams), Silent Hill 2 and Nier Automata, but the one that takes the cake for me is Planescape Torment. It's so good!

So much good writing and memorable stuff. Like,

"To learn, you must suffer, supplicant. You must allow yourself to be burned by the power of that which you wield. Know its torment, and you shall know how to use it against your enemies.”

  • Evil Within 2 - I still recommend playing or looking at a play through the first game, so you can get a full effect of the story.
  • Devil May Cry 3
  • Ghost of Tsushima
  • Resident Evil 2 Remake
  • Silent Hill 3 & Silent Hill 2 Remake
