Just like in title there are few game franchises which I would like to really enjoy like my other friends but I don't. For me there is a Xenoblade Chronicles where game setting is just for me cause I like Cyber Fantasy vibes but I totally dont like how every game feel drawn-out and boring and the action/story never kicks in for me. The other Example is or are 2D fighters. I'm a Tekken kid who totally dont get how 2D fighting games work and those are kinda boring for me. But the iconic status of the series like SF or KOF makes me want to give its new releases a try.
Share your example of games you really wanted to like, but that didn’t click with you as much as you’d hoped

Card games (TCGs and just... stuff with decks too) and MMOs, I guess. Sometimes I can put the pieces together when friends explain it but I don't really get too hooked on anything with cards despite loving crazy numbers games and combinations in other genres. There's a VERY narrow set of roguelite deckbuilders that I actually find enjoyable, and despite my friends' best efforts I can't stay into Yugioh or Shadowverse or anything like that.

MMOs have never recaptured that addiction I had back as a middle schooler, but it's probably for the best considering all the drama around them and how much time they suck out of your life. I played FFXIV up to Heavensward and was just bored to absolute death. Didn't help that being so far behind my friends meant barely ever playing with them, either.

I think if I'd have been more into football (soccer) and football games growing up, I'd have had more opportunities to play games with some of my closest friends, and it might've made them more likely to play some of my games, too.

I wish I could get into Nintendo flagship series and platformers in general. I used to think it was the kid and parent friendly squeaky clean images that turned my teenage edge self away, then I would say it needed friends to play when I was a solo gamer and I just hated the wii remote controller motion requirements, then I pointed to the high price tag even at resale and now just even sitting down to try A Link to the Past I just realized I'm not as much as a gamer as I am a reader.

There's a lack of story telling to keep me hooked or engaged the way Sony titles did. There was no sudden appearance of aliens in medieval world that takes its main characters into an ocean of stars. No opening of a country falling to enemy hands and occupation that you saw and interacted with not just oppose. No falling into a parallel world that said our main character was told died years ago and his mom left the village. No female soldier just securing a village for the army and confronting a demon that protected her from a bomb. I might try giving Zelda a chance again if there's a sale I catch but until then I'm not biting.

I do not like Chrono Trigger. Tried to beat it, got very far, but the combat was so painfully, offensively boring and repetitive, and the story made me feel nothing. I struggle to get into turn-based RPGs in general, but Mother 2 and 3 managed to captivate me with its creative worlds and story, and the combat actually has some actual real strategy to keep me engaged.

Story telling in video games should be secondary, they're not movies.

The gameplay should be complimented by the story and not the other way around.
Any fun to play western videogame with a caucassian main character.
... Why?

Probably Devil May Cry or something similarly radicool.

Because video games are called as such for a good reason.
I also think that if you need a story to get hooked in a game instead of... well, it's gameplay, there's an issue in the game design.

The stories told there:

are interesting but I have 0 idea of how those game may play like so what's the point?

I check the game genre, the gameplay style, the difficulty, the various ideas and even the soundtrack and art direction. Story is just the sprinkle on the cake.

I disagree. I don't think there should be any rules, but I was mostly just poking fun anyways. ::chocobo-dance

To be honest when Sony made narrative focused games I kinda started to stop caring. Video games shouldn't aim to be movie wannabes.

Tetris already proves that even without a proper story you can have a masterpiece of a game, same with Doom and Minecraft.

Consider the Baten Kaitos series. Two very different deckbuilding combat systems, the latter being more streamlined and fast-paced.

Basically any stealth heavy game series like Deus Ex. I just can't stand stealth at all, but a lot of these games seem really interesting. You can say some of these games can be played without stealth, but they clearly punish you giving the worst outcomes for doing that so whats the point.

Okay? I still disagree. No need to be so matter-of-fact about it.
I don't see why different approaches to an entire medium should have to be approved or dictated by what video games were 40-50 years ago.

I guess movies shouldn't have scores since they souldn't aim to be music wannabes. ::sadkirby

So does Final Fantasy 7, Ocarina of Time and The Last of Us. What a trite point to make.

And I agree with that statement of not being movies but what I mentioned were only the openers to Chrono Cross, FFXII, and Star Ocean. Openers that are just a taste to a grander story you'll unlock as you play than just hit check point to check. That why I get hooked and play again and again not just gameplay only and oh yeah there's a point to this anyway here's a power up.

There are very different genres and plenty of people look for something deeper than just a pastime and feel no satisfaction in wasting time on minecraft or something.

But oddly enough even as a point & click fan I can't stand these narrative games in style of telltale with lame interactions like hold button for a minute to open door then press button quickly to avoid falling debris or something. So boring.

Is not that I dislike the franchise, its more like "I wish I had the patience to play it", but Metal Gear Solid. I don't dislike the franchise, but I'm not a huge fan of stealth games so... That's it really. I like the characters, the story, the insanity, the interesting ideas, but I'm not much of a stealth fan sadly, the only stealth game I like was Boktai, but y'know, Boktai wasn't that big on stealth (at least in the first two games).
