What’s your opinion on speedrunning?

It's awesome! I am gob-smacked when I see people burn through some of my favourite games in minutes.

It's not my preferred way to play, until I've completed the game at least once at my own pace. It helps extend my enjoyment of a game by rewarding me for mastering the mechanics.

I enjoy watching speedruns more than attempting them. I would try them more often, but some games are so long and well optimised now, that to make a single error is to erase hours of progress. Maybe once or twice I could stomach that, but not over and over again. ::linkmouthcover

I like to watch a speedrun from time to time. I don't have the patience to attempt them, when I beat a game I move on to another one.

I mean, why wouldn't you like speedrun as a niche? Never saw anyone bragging about it, specially with casual audiences/players. Tbh, the speedrun communities are one of the most cooperative groups I ever saw in the internet. A guy discovers something that could lead him to break a world record and instantly is sharing it on the community.

Of course, there's always cheaters and scammers, but it's a different type of thing.

I like speedrun, did myself some not really "speed"runs of Bloodborne and the first Dark Souls, but I'm more of an enjoyer than a runner myself.

there have been PLENTY of speedruns i've seen of games where there was secrets/tricks/glitches that i would've never seen or heard about.
giving an example recently, in persona 3 reload, you can make the reaper kill himself, all you have to do is make yourself on fear status (or any status where you're weak to physical hits), and then use a attack mirror item, the repear is coded to always use a physical hit on a fear/weak to phys character, and you keep reflecting hits back at him till he dies. you can go from lv20 to 99 if you go solo.

another game (i play a lot of RPGs) Bravely default has so many dumb broken glitches i can go on for days about this game but i'll summarize
there's a glitch to make your character summon 255 times, it's a bit complicated but once it's set up you can do it very easily, it's ridiculous as it sounds.
there's a way to jump and hit an enemy then jump again before they get a turn, think FF jump moves, or pokemons Fly attack but they don't get a chance to hit before you disappear again lol.
mechanically like a final fantasy game theres a lot of weird combat mechanics that break the game in half

other things that come to mind:
super metroid speedruns changed the WHOLE game for me, so many wacky things i'd never figure out just playing, i mean really i played the whole super metroid without walljumping (it's hard to do, it's not like megaman X or modern metroid where you can grab ledges and hold the wall automatically)

pokemon Red/blue's MissingNO. glitch in general, i broke a pokemon red save with this glitch, oops!

any game with a sequence break, especially RPGs, you can make FF10 go BACKWARDS in the story at one point, which just brings a whole lot of weird stuff, having things from later in the game while replaying most of the early game.

castlevania symphony of the night i never learned how to dash in bat form, learned that from speedruns, that and glitching out of bounds and make your map % super inflated (like 400%, the game goes to 200.6 by normal means) much more glitchy on saturn version (which btw has it's differences, like a playable maria, singing fairy scene, some few other things.
the infamous skip death stealing all your starting gear glitch, which got even EASIER on PSP version, and any SOTN version, you just WALK BACK BEFORE THE SCENE TRIGGERS, literally, tap right, HOLD LEFT through the transition, i did it by ACCIDENT!

I should mention, FF6 has a BOATLOAD of glitches that there's a whole webpage for this !

Don´t have one every one is allowed to play games how ever they wish as long as your not cheating. Sure if you playing single player cheat away. And if you need to cheat while speed running which I seen people do then why are you even doing it if you can´t do it properly ?

Remind me of that girl that was going to blindfold and fastest time beat the hardest monster in monster hunter world. Yet shit ended up cheating like hell and she bragged she had killed that monster a 1000 times. I played world for 1000 of hours even I know the crap shit pulled of you ain´t doing blind.

As an old school 2d platforming fan, being sent back to the start of the stage over and over, you start speedrunning just to get through the level faster, unintentionally.

Not really my thing otherwise.

While I don't speedrun games personally, I don't have an issue with it. Competition is fun, so I certainly understand the appeal.

One thing I appreciate about speedrunning is that it is used as a reason to better document and understand the inner workings of a game, which can potentially benefit beyond the speedrunning player base.

I really admire the guys that do speedruns, for me is almost impossible to play a game so many times, i feel extremely bored to do it. Even MGS 1 & 2, i finish them multiple times because i wanted to unlock stuff but i couldn't speedrun them, i feel i lose something important.

I think they are very cool to watch when they are glitch-less runs. It is an awesome display of skill. However, when they use bugs and glitches to skip content, I immediately lose interest ::smash

I don't really care but when the developers get wind of it in the name of e-sports and incites it's players to do speedruns, that's when I get annoyed. In Monster Hunter Wilds, they now give you a challenge quest where you need to speedrun a quest to get an A rank to get a special pendant available for a limited time (So now there's FOMO on top.) I got my A's in the end after numerous attempts but it was a real pain...and I didn't enjoy a single second trying to get it. I dread the time when Capcom announces one of these.

In 1999 my buddy got an old NES and a few games. This was before the retro game scene and right before I got into emulation. We were like 18 and it was such a novelty for us to play old games from our elementary school days.

Anyway, we started competing with each other to see who could beat Super Mario Bros the fastest. I think my best was like 7 and a half minutes.
So yeah, I pretty much invented speedrunning. ::smug (I'm totally joking obv)

Actually I think speedrunning is really interesting to watch but I'm not into doing it myself.

They are good for learning techniques but only when they use the base mechanics of the game, when they use glitches or similar things like TAS it gets boring for me.

Giant waste of time especially on speedruns like gta 5 that take 3-6 hours just to fial and start all over especially on runs like no health lost. Don't know how how peiple don't get bored failing by x seconds beacause they fell over in x spot not in x spot and missed it by x pixels meaning they lost x time and didnt gain braging rights that they lost 3 days to complete a game in x time just to get beat next day by 0.00000001 miliseconds.

Myst was ruined from this :)

really i'm impressed of the skill of some Simphony of the Night players, those fast combo's i would probably need a third hand lol

Resident Evil 2 i think have been a perfect title to make grown the speedrun adepts number, i too was pretty good with that one, i remember i was able to complete it in less than 2 hours and without savings

Yea they're probably more fun to watch then do although I get the appeal of using cool techniques to save time.

I have always considered speedrunning very enjoyable and relaxing to watch, but my reflective nature has always led me to play video games quietly. That said they are the result of two great gifts, namely memory (both short and long term) and reflexes.

It's neat.

People who police how you should speedrun are pathetic.
Agreed

I think its impressive and fun to see highlights of records being broken, but I would never do it personally.

I enjoy and marvel looking at them... But as someone that appreciates things like the music, iddle animations, background art, etc, i couldn't do it, also it ends it feeling like forced labor to me... I'm a slave to Sonic 1, remember to start after the no, no, no animation.
