I remember struggling with the lack of analog controls when I first played the game on my DS and not playing very far at that time. I played it with an analog hack years later and enjoyed it quite a bit though. It's a neat twist on an all time classic.

I was surprised to see all the reactions online later that so many people struggled with the d-pad, though I think it's probably because most people tried using the DS lite d-pad. I always thought that d-pad was a major downgrade from the original DS design.

Anyway, I've always loved it. Seeing such a big deal of a video game on a handheld at the time was a real head turner. I probably played through it like ten times over and it was really nice to have after my copy of the N64 original got lost sometime.

What an evil Nintendo game!!! This game was sponsored collectively by all the casinos in Las Vegas to brainwash kids just to make them lose their bright future with a gamble that the house always wins lololol.

i never ever noticed the controls as a kid, but that's probably because i hadn't played the original. i was mostly disappointed because you couldn't mess around with mario's face on the title screen, that was seriously a dealbreaker for me.

It was decent but the original is still superior in almost every ways and since 3D platformers have evolved in 8 years I think the revolutionary aspect has been dimmed down despite being impressive for a handheld.

How does that work? Is this on the Repo?

I think it's pretty good, and that the complaints about the d-pad are blown out of proportion.

The original is better though.
Speaking of which, has anyone made a hack of the original, where they've transferred the models and textures from the remake? I've always thought the remake looked prettier.

Sorry for asking but I've tried to patch the game and run the custom version of Desmume yet analog doesn't work...

People are whinnning over the smallest detail. Even if the game has been reworked to make things slightly easier.

People also complained about being forced to play as Yoshi despite that you only spend one hour.

The original is better though.

I think it wouldn't have worked for the N64.

Mario 64 DS was my favorite DS game for a while and it was my first time playing Mario 64. The controls were something I got used to and I didn't have any trouble adjusting to and from the original 64 controls. As someone who has played both I think DS is still a great way to play the game, but it is flawed in its bonus content. The new characters are pretty cool to play as but I wish Wario was more useful than just breaking black bricks and having the metal cap power up. Compared to Luigi who felt like a side grade to Mario, Wario feels too specific with what he's given. Dividing the stars up between the cast and making them more character specific means you have to run back and change characters which feels tedious for 100% completion, but this mitigated by Yoshi at least (something better than nothing in my opinion.) As for the 30 new stars to collect (150 in total) they are all 8 red coin challenges, 5 silver star challenges, and star switch challenges which seem dull. Why not make more new specific challenges than just the same 3 copy paste ones? The new levels to explore, however, including their boss fights, are a main highlight I enjoy. The mini games are also the best thing added to 64 DS aside from the new levels.

I saw a friend play it as a kid an asked for my own copy, got all the stars eventually and caught all the annoying rabbits but never beat final bowser and saw the ending. I liked it but by no means is it on my favorite games of all time list. I would say it was a great launch title for the system.

Why does it not really get talked about? I never played the original so i cant really compare them but why does the 64 version still super popular and the ds one forgotten, I understand the speed running stuff being a lot better on the original but why are all the romhackers using the original over the remake. Is it something about the game? Is it the hardware? something else?

I reckon for a lot of people it comes down to the controls. For others, myself included, it comes down to how the game divides up the stars and objectives amongst the cast instead of making them easily obtainable with only Mario like in the original. For instance, there are stars that need certain power ups to obtain, but in DS the power ups are now character specific. So if I want the star "Luigi in a Cage" I'll need to head back to the character changing room and pick Luigi, then go up to the attic of the castle to then do that objective. Granted, this is slightly mitigated if you find the character's specific hat in a stage or if you start the level with Yoshi to transform into said character, but then you have to make sure you don't get hit or else you lose the transformation. That's what I believe to be the main reason people don't give DS a chance when the 64 version just allows you to nab any star you want freely. I still think DS is good and worth playing though, moreso now that there's a hack to give it analog movement.

It's great.
Wish they'd remake/re-release it.
It's the best on Wii U with the full analog patch (patcher is available on the Homebrew store, FYI) that adds support for both left and right sticks.
