Hi,

What is the best tool to use to extract music & sound effects from most of the cartridge roms? I've tried using some of the tools listed in Romhacking.net, but haven't had any luck getting them to work properly. ❓❓

There's a good and detailed guide listed on fantasyanime.com on extracting game music, though it might not have the tools you're looking for, since it talks about downloading already extracted music files and not extracting from your own roms.

There are also some utilities for extracting audio at Zophar's Domain.

ExactAudioCopy allows for ripping from many CDS and DVDS, including ones for games.

gbgbs allows for extracting game boy and game boy color sound files.

Kega Fusion can rip sound files for the Sega series of systems.

N64 Tools can extract music files from N64 roms

And vgmtrans can rip sound files for a myriad of systems, though not in their native formats.

NDSHeader can give sdat files from DS roms.

3DS music dumping is more complicated, and requires more hardware as far as I know, but can still be done.

Here is a large source of PSF audio files.

VGMToolbox can dump and extract sound files for roms in their native formats as well, using it with sdat files can give 2sf or nds audio files.

You can get a more thorough guide to video game music and its formats here, as well as good tools to extract some formats, which will be recognizable through comparing the formats to Zophar's Domain as well as fantasyanimes description of music formats.

If there's anything else you need, feel free to ask.

Great tool list,nice job

For a game on any of those systems, we're probably talking proprietary engines, so I wouldn't count on any tools to work across the board. On the plus side, decompilations have been on the rise; do any exist for the game you're trying to hack?
