What's missing in gaming right now ?

Creativity, passion and fun are missing, they're being stifled in most large scale creative endeavors because they are putting the cart before the horse with profit as the sole motive. Honestly most companies in nearly every industry these days are judging their potential "products" as just that, a simple equation or value proposition where the projects greenlit are generally only those with the potential to net the highest possible profits or at least break even. This is why Hollywood would rather make endless remakes than take a risk on an unproven and unknown IP or original film. This is also why original anime or any other original work not based on preexisting IP would be disincentivized from ever being greenlit in modern times. Sadly this also applies to the games industry with it's live service ouroboros, and it's killing creativity, for the most part.
something something art made for everybody appeals to nobody

i feel what has (mostly in AAA) been lost but not completly is that kind of child wonder that games had back then (you can still see it with indies).
and i mean as in:

when it was treated as mostly for kids, they would often try to catch your attention and let your imagination run wild.

a thing that nowadays its more by the numbers, more sanitized and cynical in how its approached because of the overcompetitive market and the need to keep growing their audiences.

tldr: the era of standing out for innovative ideas or worlds to capture ypur imagination have mostly shifted towards clinical desing for mass appeal in a saturated market.

not enough 8 ball pool/fishing minigames...
ill be honest i gree too lmao, ive been trying to find another jrpgs with mini games and gambling that scratch that itch in my brain for a while, xenoblade and DQ did a really good job i cant find another game to compare them to

I agree .
While creativity , passion and fun was there too , they knew that they make a videogame and not an art-project .

The overglorification to its creative aspects was always something that bothered me . Its not art , its more than art . Its an entertaiment product that has challenge , mechanics and interactivity to entertain us . I stand by John Carmacks quote that " Story in videogames is like story in a porn . It is expected to be there but its not important . "

YOU ACTUALLY CRACKED THE CODE ,YOU GLORIOUS BASTARD ! ::flexing

Hmm this is so complicated. I feel like nothing is missing - in fact EVERYTHING is going on good and bad lol. Tons of magical games coming out from non AAA companies. Even some of the big fish are putting out good stuff. The problem is that the lizard people and parasites are out here playing with serious money and trying to force bullshit pay models and streamlining that greatly compromises high potential projects.

That being said, I could buy three good ass indie games nowadays for the price of one mushy sloppy exploitive shitty online service. So I'll just go that route.

The physical media thing is tough because now even if they focused on physical releases, scalpers know gaming culture well enough to know they can buy up everything and jack the prices because nobody has any self control and will reward the scalper behavior.

There's far fewer game series that come out within a reasonable time frame at this point. Kids just aren't growing up with yearly (give or take) instalments to series any more, someone might be an adult before they see a sequel to a game they liked during their formative years.

In its place, we have ended up with games as service. More "content", less iterations with game mechanics.

Creativity, damn, how long has it been since a truly interesting or fun new game/franchise was released ?
