Kind of a simple one — is there a retro game you find yourself revisiting every now and then, no matter how many times you've beaten it?
For me it's Celeste Classic on GBA. Something about the tight platforming just clicks every time. I replay it once every few months and it never gets old.
Curious what everyone else's "comfort retro game" is.

Heroes of might and magic II and III
Command and Conquer 95
Command and conquer Tibeian sun
Link to the past
Mario 64

I could replay them on and off till I die.

Pikmin 2 on GameCube. That gameplay loop is just so satisfying.

Often come back to replay Soleil and phantasy star 4

Bad News Baseball (NES)

Donkey Kong 94' (Game Boy)

UN Squadron (SNES)

Gunstar Heroes (Genesis)

Love these games.

I beat OoT, SOTN pretty much yearly, older FF pre VII are also some comfort games I can always come back to no matter what

Super Mario 3D Land (controversial pick)
I tried but I've been stupid and I've unlocked the extra worlds (and died in them) and missed the medals for the story levels... so I quit. I would like to try it again, this time I will keep my medals for the main levels, though.
That said, sometimes I see myself going back to the picross-themed games on 3ds (Pokemon, Hello Kitty, Nintendo), not retro but my most retro is ps1/gba and among them there are no titles I keep coming back.

It's usually beat 'em ups or fighting games that I find myself coming back to since I think they are the type of games that are evergreen, at least for me. Tekken 3 is one of my favorites for fighting games along with Street Fighter Alpha games(particularly 3) while Aliens vs Predator or Punisher would be my pick for beat 'em ups.

OG King's Field (the Japanese one) and OG Armored Core. And that's about it, always try to beat them once per year as a """"""tradition"""""".
The quality differential between Kings Field and Armored Core is INSANE, with Armored Core being significantly better and less stiff. It's amazing to me that King's Field has gotten such a resurgence in popularity because of the Souls games, despite being objectively pretty awful to play and control.

Retro Games I keep going back to? A lot of PSOne games as well. I too go back to Armored Core a lot, lots of FInal Fantasy Titles, Resident Evil Trilogy, Metal Gear Solid, Tekken 3, Crash Team Racing... the nostalgia is high for me and this console.

Battle Garegga. I probably have an ungodly amount of hours on this game, spanning decades. Probably the best game i've ever played.

Streets of Rage 1 on my mega drive, still have the original game and GTA Vice City, the 80's miami vibes and the music, i play it once a year, always.

does Ys Origin and Ark of Napishtem count as retro? I play those games over and over.. for years
