What your best retro horror game that you've ever played

There are two horror films that "engaged" me the most - if we can say so - throughout the gameplay: Resident Evil 2 and Project Zero.
I saw the first one played by my parents as a child, obviously covering my eyes ::biggrin::biggrin, we know it by heart and we know all the characters and the story; however, I discovered Project Zero by chance some time ago, looking for some horror games for PS2 to add to my library. A fantastic, anxiety-inducing, terrifying and not at all obvious game. I can't wait to finish the other 2 for PS2, which confirms itself as the horror console par excellence.

I made the mistake of taking a Hyperkin Supaboy and Clock Tower on a plane with me late at night. Needless to say I got scared and loudly yelped in the middle of the flight embarassing the hell out of my wife and making a fool of myself.

The original PSX versions of Resident Evil 1 & 2 will always be my favorite horror games of all time.
Hahahaha! What part specifically? The second barrows twin really scared me, its "cradle" is so bizarre it becomes disturbing. Why is it this giant bed surrounded by blood red theatre curtains held up by greek pillairs almost like an altar? Its so spooky. And the way it reaches out to Jennifer as she runs away and makes that grotesque face, impliying its intelligent. Was it screaming to her? Ugh imagine how that would sound. How it crawls towards you god I felt such dreads it was so grotesque imagine being chased down by that thing in a damp cave down a narrow path surrounded by water! And how jennifer kills it almost accidentally brrr it was more like surviving a train crash than a victory
I expected something like that well into the horror genre not at almost the very start! It's mindblowing I tell you

And the music man, goddamn, the super famicom chip is really showing its worth

1. Phantasmagoria (MS-DOS) (Sega Saturn)
phantasmagoria1.jpg

Phantasmagoria is a point-and-click adventure horror video game designed by Roberta Williams for MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows and released by Sierra On-Line on August 24, 1995. It tells the story of Adrienne Delaney (Victoria Morsell), a writer who moves into a remote mansion and finds herself terrorized by supernatural forces. It was made at the peak of popularity for interactive movie games and features live-action actors and footage, both during cinematic scenes and within the three-dimensionally rendered environments of the game itself. It was noted for its violence and sexual content.

2. Stonekeep (MS-DOS)
sk_246.jpg

Stonekeep is centered on a hero, Drake. Ten years before the events of the game, Drake's home, the castle of Stonekeep, was destroyed by the insane god Khull-Khuum, the Shadowking. Drake, at this time just a boy, was saved from the castle by a mysterious figure. Returning to the ruins of Stonekeep, Drake is visited by the goddess Thera, who sends his spirit out of his body into the ruins itself to explore, find the mystical orbs containing the other gods, and reclaim the land.

3. BLOOD (MS-DOS)
maxresdefault.jpg

The game follows the story of Caleb, an undead early 20th century gunslinger seeking revenge against the demon Tchernobog. It features a number of occult and horror themes. Blood includes large amounts of graphic violence, a large arsenal of weapons ranging from the standard to the bizarre, and numerous enemies and bosses.

4. Forbidden Siren (PS2) (PS4 Re-Mastered) (PS5 Re-make)
Miyako_Attacked.jpg

The story of Siren is told through the alternating perspectives of ten survivors of a supernatural disaster in the (fictional) rural Japanese town of Hanuda (羽生蛇村, in the Japanese version) in 2003 (Heisei year 15). These events are presented outside of chronological order and deal primarily with the efforts of the viewpoint characters to both escape the town and find answers to what has happened in the three days immediately following the disaster.

5. KUON (PS2)
Kuon_gameplay.jpg

Kuon takes place in and around Fujiwara Manor, an estate in Kyoto, Japan during the Heian period. Central to the plot are two magical Mulberry trees planted near the present Fujiwara Manor by the Hata clan. The trees birth silkworms which weave cocoons around the dead and resurrect them. The resurrection can only be sustained by merging with other living beings, including humans, and absorbing their "grudge". The ultimate goal of the Mulberries is to perform the merging nine times, completing the Kuon Ritual and birthing a being which will become a new Mulberry.

6. Obscure (PS2) (PSP) (Xbox Classic) (Wii)
obscure-the-aftermath-002_720x.jpg

Upon learning their friend Kenny has gone missing, Josh, Stan, Shannon, and Ashley set out to find him. However, their search leads to them being locked in Leafmore High overnight. While searching the campus, they are attacked by photosensitive monsters that can be weakened with flashlights and killed by direct sunlight. Meanwhile, Kenny encounters a fellow student named Dan. They attempt to escape together, but Dan is killed by one of the monsters.

The students eventually discover a conspiracy surrounding Principal Friedman, who has been kidnapping students and infecting them with spores derived from a rare African plant called Mortifilia under the belief that it will allow them to live forever. Additionally, they learn that Herbert and his accomplice Elisabeth are over 100 years old despite appearing in their 60s after successfully experimenting on each other. Along the way, the students become exposed to the spores while Herbert is killed by Professor Walden, who seeks to cure himself of his infection. Upon seeing this, Herbert's brother Leonard grows enraged, kills Walden, and mutates into a large, monstrous form, only to be defeated by the students. The group return to the gym to inject themselves with a cure. Though Leonard returns to attack them, they defeat him once more and leave him to die in the sunlight.

7. Silent Hill 2 (PS2) (PC, PS5 Re-make)
Silent_Hill_2_gameplay.jpg

James Sunderland (Luke Roberts) arrives in Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his wife Mary (Salóme Gunnarsdóttir), who died three years earlier from a degenerative disease. While exploring the abandoned town, he meets Angela Orosco (Gianna Kiehl), a 19-year-old searching for her mother; overweight and erratic Eddie Dombrowski (Danny Kirrane (appearance), Scott Haining (voice)); and Laura (Evie Templeton), an eight-year-old girl who befriended Mary while they were in hospital together. James encounters inhuman creatures throughout the town, and is stalked by an indestructible creature, Pyramid Head.

8. Fear & Hunger (PC)
34GAou.png

The Fear & Hunger games are based in an alternate Europe, in a world stricken with war and tainted by the influence of cruel old gods. The games explore the desire of humanity to pursue these gods, both in worship and to be noticed. Ultimately even to try to rise to their level, discovering just the cost such an endeavour would require.
I remember the cutscenes in blood being really horrific especially that spider one

Ah Splatterhouse and Night Slashers, those are gems, i LOVE night slashers because it mixes classic monsters with beat em up in a way that feels like an action horror movie, like Army of Darkness, and Splatterhouse from 1 to 3 are just amazing, just search "Splatterhouse 3 intro" on youtube, that OST is just funky and spooky.
I've recently finished the first Splatterhouse game, it's awesome! I wish to finish the whole franchise, it's my favorite game franchise for sure!

My favorites are:
Silent Hill 1-4 and origins
Fatal frame 1-3
Siren 1 and 2
Clock Tower The first fear
Kuon (What an underrated master piece)

But if we talk about "The best" Silent Hill 3 is my answer.

Resident Evil 1 Remake, Original RE4, Koudelka, System Shock (both versions), System Shock 2, and The House of the Dead are my favorites.

I played the original Resident Evil 2 when I was a kid. I didn't beat it because I was terrified of it.

The already mentioned system shock series, Oppressive atmosphere, sense of dread, memorable villains, love the sound design, protocol droids and hybrids are a highlight.

For me: Resident Evil 2.

But that's too easy of an answer. So what would be the best retro horror I played and beaten that Is not Resident Evil 2?

Deep Fear (SEGA Saturn)

It has plenty of flaws, mostly with the combat being pretty simple for a RE clone except your pistol has Infinite ammo, and there are places to refill your ammo (You Instead find ammo capacity upgrades) and both SMGs suck (There Is a third one, but that's a prototype assault rifle, the HK G11 but the game calls It an SMG, maybe for mechanic sake) plus you have places that have Infinite healing Items/grenades (But you have a limit on how many you can carry or each) but that's okay considering the game starts at ground zero on the first house the outbreak begins so the location Is fully stocked being that It's a military Installation that rents out several parts to make up for the running costs.

And yes, there's the voice acting, but It feels Intentional like with the first Resident Evil. Just adds some cheesyness, except...

It kind of conflicts with the best parts: The story, the setting, and the atmosphere. The setting Is well thought out, why your character Is not Infected despite being at ground zero, when a character dies It actually tugs at what's left of my empathy.despiet the cardboard voice acting. As for the atmosphere, you'll mostly be exposed to ambient sound than music except for two tracks, the entire soundtrack Is for the CGI cutsenes. Only music you'll hear In-game are for boss battles and when an explosion related countdown starts. As yes, the soundtrack Is really good.

Too bad It won't get a re-release/remaster and you're either paying a ton to play It or dealing with Saturn emulation.

So many

The original Silent Hill should be re-released, and Shattered Memories is underrated.

Sweet Home (NES)
Laplace no Ma (SNES)
Splatterhouse series
Blood (DOS)
Ravenloft: Stradh's Possession (DOS)
Kuon (PS2)
Siren (PS2)
Fatal Frame (PS2)
Dementium (DS)
Obscure (PS2)
Shivers (DOS)

I can still remember the feeling.

I was 12 and just bought an used copy of Metal Gear Solid. Funny enough, the game came with an extra cd, which was named "Demo Disk: Silent Hill'.

"What a stroke of luck!", my mind giggled, "I get to play the best game on the Ps1, plus I get to try a bonus one!? Yes please!!"

Of course, I wasn't really interested that much as I was there for Solid Snake's crazy adventures. So I set aside the demo for another time.

Weeks went by and, I must admit it, I forgot about the chance of experiencing true horror as I was entranced by Liquid Snake's stupidly sexy trenchcoat and Snipers Wolf's sniping abilities. However, after gitting gud and getting all endings and unlockables (yes, I've burned those CDs) I was finally ready for a change. That change came during a summer night.

It was late June and I was recovering from an intense day at the beach. I had no plans for the evening so I remembered about that little demo of mine.

"I've never tried an horror game before, but Gray Fox's butchering startled me just a bit so I'm sure I can handle this" I pondered while setting the disck.

Now here memories get a bit fuzzy, I remember that there was two modes on the main menu:
-Story (or start)
- Adventure (I think)

What I clearly recall is choosing the second option because, you know, I'm a brave boy.

As the screen lighted up, I was presented with a gloomy sight. My unnamed character was thrown into what seemed abandoned school. Not a sound could be heard besides the dripping of water in the distance. It was absolutely silent. And definitely on a hill.

The game had made a strong first impression. So much so, in fact, that I had to up the brightness and quickly exit the building. I didn't know why, but I wanted to leave. Unfortunately, that turned out to be a bitter mistake as the moment my nose picked outside I was ambushed by two horrible flying monsters which made me run back inside.

Scared and alone I was back at square one. I felt like a little girl who lost his father in a car accident, but I had no time to linger. I wanted to push forward because, you know, I am adventurous.

So I slowly walked down the hall, bravely holding my gun ready to face whatever the game wanted to throw at me. I opened my first door and...

A horrible midget covered in blood and rotting flesh ran at me with stabbing intentions. It grabbed my legs with an unnatural strength and quickly started draining my life.

Panicking and screaming I quickly and bravely turn off the console and never played Silent Hill 1 again.

That demo definitely made an impact.

Another great game, if you can bare the mixed soundtrack is Dino Crisis.

I game that I love, it's not super scary, but if you play it on hard during yot first playthrough you will feel the tension.

Furthermore, the first time a clever girl will open a door you will panic!

Innsmouth no Yakata
Really unique little survival horror on the Virtual Boy of all things, gorgeous yet creepy sprite art, the red and black color pallete add to the aesthetic.

Resident Evil Gaiden
Say what you will about the gameplay and design, but the spirte art really unnerved me as a kid, still kinda does...

Soft and Cuddly
Soft_&_Cuddly_Inlay_Cover.jpg

Another not-so-good game and arguably one of the first troll games, but something about the abstractness of the sprite art in this game really unsettles me, I know it's just trying to be edgy on purpose though lol.

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream is an honorable mention.

Home (ps vita and other consoles). On my first playthrough you think something is going to get you at all times it is quiet and all you hear is the steps of the character for the hole time i was playing the tension felt exterme. The things you find on the way are super creepy the game has lovely pixel art graphics and it is relatively short with about an hour of playtime. The darkness is also anice way to make the game more creepy.

5 days a stranger. It has, probably, 3 games after that first one. They get better and better. Amateur game maker in adventure game studios, won't give a link because I didn't read the rules. I think it would be a clever idea for a site like this to try to port some of these games to emulators, if the other site agreed. Might be too much baggage and unneccessary hassle. Great series of point and click psychological horror.

Shivers series. Criminally overlooked series from Sierra.

Also, Rule of Rose, which was already mentioned. Which is the most stylish one out there.

Sonic heroes because the thought of having to play it four times always terrifies me

It absolutely suffers that retro horror game problem where you become so powerful that it stops being scary, but the opening of Shadow Tower Abyss captures exactly what I fear would happen if I don't close the bedroom door fast enough while getting the shredded cheese at 3 AM.
