My first Visual Novel was Clannad. I had seen both of the anime series: Clannad and Clannad After Story and enjoyed watching both of them. I usually browse Wikipedia articles for whatever I'm interested in and found that it apparently had a video game. I bought it on Steam, ready to experience Clannad all over again and I was ready to try out a Visual Novel, with a walkthrough helping me get to many of the routes. I really enjoyed being able to play/read Clannad while getting to experience so much more that the anime didn't cover. Getting the Clannad Visual Novel got me to discover the many incredible music, art, characters and stories that can told through Visual Novels and allowed me to also discover so many others like it that I've been able to play through.

Mine was Radical Dreamers, the Satellaview-exclusive spin-off to Chrono Trigger and sorta prequel to Chrono Cross. I was going through a brief Chrono Trigger/SNES-era Square Enix phase as a teen and I wanted to play some more Trigger. So anyway, one thing lead to the other and now I find myself playing untranslated VNs with the help of a translation program and my budding understanding of Japanese.

It was (unfortunately) Doki Doki Literature Club.
I think Doki Doki is incredibly overrated and an incredibly mediocre visual novel that is all style and no substance.

I'm glad I read Umineko, Higurashi, and other well-written visual novels (such as Zero Escape, Ace Attorney, The Silver Case, etc.) because I realized how mediocre Doki Doki is after reading those.

Also read Katawa Shoujo, Slay the Princess, and VA-11 Hall-A, they are far better and have much better writing than Doki Doki.

first time i decided to test the first and the second case of the game on the DS and i really liked it.
so i decided to finish the HD Trilogy first then replay the games on the DS (which i did it)

25th Ward is my favorite

Before I knew what was a Visual Novel (It was a looooong time ago), my first experience was an adult hybrid VN, a date-sim : True Love 95 (A cool game) 👴

Several weeks/months later, my first "true" Visual Novel was Kana -Little Sister-. I cried a lot 😭

But the one thing that changes everything - ten years ago - was another hybrid-VN : Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc.

Thanks to this game (that I love so dearly), I finally did some research and discovered what the Visual Novel genre was (Before that I thought that titles like Season of the Sakura, Phoenix Wright 1, 2, 3 or 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors were just "ordinary" Adventure/Point 'n Click games). I then moved on to a few Eroge (Crescendo, Yume Miru Kusuri...) and, most importantly, to the great Steins;Gate!

Does Disco Elysium count?
I think the first one I actually played was Virtues' Last Reward from the Zero Escape series since I had seen a youtuber, Joseph Anderson, play the first one and I thought it had a pretty cool concept.

My "firsts" where mostly adventure/puzzle/VN combined, someone already said Phoenix Wright on the DS, but also 999 and Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective. (before that i also loved playing western style P&C adventure games, Maniac Mansion, I Have no Mouth and I Must Scream, The Pink Panther: Passport to Peril etc) I would say that my first proper VN was Saya no Uta lol, i do enjoy horror games.

I plead the fifth.

Edit: It was Three Sister's Story. Look it up, its kind of funny, with some truly messed up shit sprinkled it randomly.
That was my first as well.

A fascinating experience. I downloaded it from an abandonware site expecting you know what, and not only do I get exactly that, but I also get an unexpectedly well written story to go along with it.
