I always thought that getting to name yourself (and your rival) was one of the coolest parts of any Pokemon game, and I have had a lot of fun with that over the years, naming my foe after people I didn't particularly like IRL and naming myself as the nickname my friends gave me (which used to be my online moniker, and so it won't be revealed here. Sorry).

When I first played Yellow (my first Pokemon game), all I wanted was to be Ash and so... I named myself Ash, and the rival got to be Gary, of course.

Later I went by my real name, but that's not here nor now.

What about you?

At first, I used my real name. As time went on I decided to follow the manga convention and name protagonists after the games.
I don't have that issue playing gen IV...
Edit: Oh you meant the manga names, not the canon names... Well my innuendo flew under the radar lol.

First time around I think I named him after myself but I had to shorten it because it's a long french name and then later on when I started reading the manga I got in to the habit of using the cannon names just because I think it's cool! And I used to try to have the same kind of teams, not always but on my first play through of any after I started reading the manga.

Sounds like a bondage S&M thread.
I name my trainer after myself most of the time, so it was probably just my name.
I still don't want to have to argue the reasons why Pokémon isn't an RPG, but an Adventure game with minor RPG elements involved (mainly; character levelling; which doesn't make a game 'Role-Playing'), but I'll fuckin' do it

first pokemon game was firered (also first videogame overall), I like most kids used my Real first name, and i just named the rival gary after the anime.

nowadays i usually just go with default names for the player character and something funny for the rival

Hey, yeah! Now I remember!
I named myself Ash, and the rival Gary.

God, I feel like professor Oak. ?

Which might not even be a joke, considering he also didn't remember Gary's name at first lol
I have that kind of memory; will be cocksure and positive about something up until the moment I remember otherwise, which I change my tune and do a 180⁰, which makes some people mad at me. ?

At first I used my name for the trainer and later I started to use the preset's names that the professor gave you and now I use the official/canon names.

I started with Red and I too had the combination of Ash and Gary. x) Past that it's been a combo of my name and friend's name for the rival, or just cool sounding names.

I'd never name myself Ash. My IQ would drop. That said naming rivals after certain body parts or bodily functions seems popular.

I never wanted to name my characters Ash either, I don't necessarily hate him but (especially if you read the manga) he's just grossly incompetent 24/7. He means well, and he loves his pokemon, but my god I wouldn't trust him with safety scissors.

Doesn't his own Pidgeotto flat out quit his team in the Manga? I might be misremembering.

Exactly. He doesn't know a thing and still wins by the power of Deus-Ex Machina. I don't like protagonists like that.

Oh, the manga is very different unless I'm confusing my English! In the Manga, Red is basically a pokémon battling god. Gary is Blue, and he's an expert at training, conditioning, learning moves and Green specializes in evolving pokémon and their care.

In the long long ago, before I was middler, I was PSI because you needed a 3 letter name for arcades. So, for pokemon blue I was PSI.
