I remember begging my parents to get me this gorgeous Alcatel 331A when I was about 12-years-old because my sister had gotten a Nokia 1100 earlier that year and, well, I didn't wanna miss out on all the cool things people were doing at the time. I actually didn't need a phone, though, since I was a friendless shut-in who rarely left the house XD But I managed to convince my parents because things were very rough in the country at the time and they agreed that I needed one.

I actually witnessed a bunch of my classmates getting mugged for their phones, but the two times I was ambushed for mine, I had forgotten it back home, so the robber ended up walking away with $2. Dumb luck at its finest XD

What about you?

Awesome thread idea. The first phone I had was an Audiovox CDM 9100. It looked very similar to a Nokia phone. And it even had text messaging and basic e-mail features.

I was a sophomore in high school at the time. IIRC, it was a Christmas gift. It wasn't something I was asking my parents for, but after 9/11 happened, I think a lot of parents in the area decided to get phones for their kids, to be on the safe side. Plus, I was going to school outside of my local neighborhood, so it was useful with coordinating with my parents or friends who I'd meet up with to take the train to and from school together.

My first cell phone was a Motorola given to me by my mother in the late 1990s, but I honestly do not remember the exact model. It was black in color and all in all quite compact.... Later I bought a Nokia 3310 in white color.

I had a nokia but I really liked the Motorola flip phones too. The RAZR was iconic but there was another one before that and I can't remember the name of it.

I might just be a big weirdo but I never owned a cell phone back in the day, and really have no desire to! I do remember a time when I acquired a Motorola Razor but I never activated it. I was fascinated with those Motorola Talkabout T900 2-way pagers as a kid and really wanted one. When I attended high school I was the odd one without a phone. Honestly I still prefer landline but with modern requirements these days I use a phone but for limited uses.

I totally get where you're coming from, stealthRUSH. I have an older iPhone nowadays, that I pretty much need to have on hand to stay connected with work, family, and my partner. But for periods of the year, I leave it on silent, and try not to use it. It feels great to be disconnected during that time frame.

I remember it was a flip phone. Nothing fancy or expensive. You had to pay for minutes used including internet searches. I had a Peter Griffin ringtone i downloaded on it and a TMNT 3 song i recorded from Youtube (it was the surfing level). One day in class the 4 Peters singing went off because i kept getting robo calls. Everyone in class laughed. XD

My phone kind of looked like this.

I get what you are saying.

I was actually completely resistant to the idea of getting a smartphone when those were starting to be a thing because I was just happy with my Sony Ericsson Z500A.

Some people even bullied me because I didn't know what WhatsApp was... And, even more annoyingly, I started getting excluded from things because didn't want to spend 10 cents sending me a SMS or give me a call whenever they made plans. Pricks.

IIRC an LG flip phone from 2004. It was under a contract with verizon. It was a bad experience so I've been using prepaid phones from Tracfone ever since then.

I don't remember!
Whatever leftover my sister let me have after her first upgrade.
I had something like a Nokia 6103 but don't remember if it was the first one.

The 3310 is a legend. I don't think I've ever met anyone who has really broken it.

Stole it from a crippled old lady off the coast of Albuquerque.

I used to surf those beaches, but climate change caused a serious jellyfish migration; ate my ass up the last time out.

If I'm remembering correctly I think it was one of these:

I got it when I was 13, because I wanted a phone and my parents had said they'd give me one when I turned 13. For a cheap flip phone from the time, it was pretty nice.

I'd kill for something like that today.

At least here in the States some companies do still make and support flip phones for people who want them, but it is sad how much rarer they've become in general.
Is that the burner phone thing I keep hearing about? It's nice that they still offer them as an option, though. I can certainly use the peace and quiet that came with no other notification than an incoming SMS.

Some people probably do use them as burner phones, but that's usually more "I use this phone for activities I don't want associated with my main phone"
Most of the time you just hear people call them dumbphones :loldog

My first cellphone as a teen was a red Motorola Razr in the 2000s
