The more time goes by, the less interested I become in new movie releases. And that bothers me. From time to time, I catch myself wondering if I’m just being foolish, too nostalgic, or if I’m simply losing interest in new films altogether. Am I the problem?

But when I look at it more carefully, I notice a pattern: over the past five years, on average, only two or three films per year truly manage to catch my attention. The rest fades into the background. Too much marketing, not enough soul.

This year, for example, I only watched three new releases: Nobody 2, Sisu: Road to Revenge, and the Minecraft movie. The last one was more about curiosity — almost a social experiment — than genuine excitement.

The other two, though, were different.

I had already seen the first films — and really liked the originals — but even so, I went in with pretty low expectations. And then something extremely rare these days happened: the sequels turned out to be better than the originals.

Nobody 2 starts with a simple, almost trivial idea. A family trip to a water park. That’s it. But the film takes that innocent setup and spirals into a completely wild plot, with villains controlling the city, gratuitous violence, over-the-top action, and moments that are genuinely funny. It’s pure, unapologetic action. It doesn’t try to be deep, but it’s not stupid either. It knows exactly what it wants to deliver — and it delivers.

Sisu: Road to Revenge, on the other hand, takes a different route. The protagonist returns home to find everything empty — no family, no sense of belonging. From there, he sets off on a journey to cross the border and try to rebuild what he lost. The problem? The Russians don’t make that journey easy. The film is brutal, creative (sometimes almost too much — like a scene involving a tank and another with a missile), and has very little dialogue. I doubt there are more than fifty spoken lines in the entire movie. And you don’t miss a single one. The experience is so immersive that long, explanatory dialogue is simply unnecessary.

What’s most interesting is that neither film tries to please everyone. They have personality. And maybe that’s exactly what’s missing from most modern releases: the courage to be simple, direct, and faithful to their own vision.

So when someone asks me what the last new release I truly enjoyed this year was, the answer comes effortlessly. It’s not a long list. It’s not a top ten. It’s two films that did the basics extremely well — the way cinema always did when it was taken seriously.

And honestly? Sometimes that’s really all we’re asking for: to walk away from a movie feeling like our time wasn’t wasted.

But what about you?
Which films did you watch this year that brought back that warm feeling of something genuinely new?

Sinners was great, I also quite enjoyed Frankenstein. And The Secret Agent, but the last one is from my country, and probably wont be available in the U.S. for a While. Zootopia 2 was not good, but it did surpass my bottom of the barrel expectations.

I'm the same but with video games. For movies I still have some hope.

The last new movie I actually enjoyed was Frankenstein. I even watched it twice.

Oh my God, I completely forgot about Ballerina. Thanks for the reminder!

I somehow managed to not see any movies from this year, but I did see old movies that were new to me. Not sure if that applies here, since I sought them out for various reasons and not marketing or buzz or whatever.

Any in particular?
I watched Brief Encounter from 1945 a month or so ago because it was being screened for the film's anniversary. Absolutely marvellous film.

Submarine from 2010, slice of life about a high school student. It wasn't bad.

I watched all six Silent Night, Deadly Night movies back to back one day, after seeing the "Garbage Day!" clip and wondering where it was from. The first one is ok, second one is ok (even though it has a ton of clips from the first movie, so you could almost just watch part 2 and skip the first one), and the rest are awful

Interstate 60, where a guy makes a wish, but has to travel this highway that doesn't actually exist in order to have it granted.

One Cut of the Dead, it's a zombie movie but it's about this crew making a zombie movie that's one cut. Kind of an interesting concept.

Oh yeah that Submarine was written or directed by Richard Ayoade I believe? Glad it was alright.

I'm due to go see the new entry in Silent Night, Deadly Night series dropping later this week. I've seen the "Garbage Day!" clip and that's it. I consider myself caught up xD

That Interstate 60 sounds like a cool premise. I haven't heard of it so I'll probably give it a watch at some point.

I enjoyed One Cut of the Dead. Especially the lead Actress's performance. Not laugh out loud funny like I had hoped, but cleverly filmed.

Superman. It became my favorite superhero movie ever.
For movies I plan on seeing with either one of my brothers this christmas season it's One Battle After Another, Frankenstein, and FNAF2 (not really excited, just for kicks)

The last time I remember going out of my way to see a movie on release was the Lego movie. They were sold out so I saw the Nut Job instead.

Thought "Fantastic Four: First Steps" was pretty good. Not amazing, but considering how the series had been adapted in the past and how much it got right, it was fairly admirable

Still not thrilled overall with them shooting their load with Galactus appearing as the big bad when it should have been probably saved for maybe three or four films down the line

Well I didn't watch any new movie this here but I did watch this hidden gems that I miss

Sandlot
Stand by Me
Adventure on Babysitting
Flight to Navigator
