What type of gameplay, skillset, or character do you favor in games that offer multiple playstyles?

I generally favor hyper aggressive mobility and rushdown, anything that allows me to apply constant pressure or dictate the pace of gameplay. I also prefer having a large variety of options, even if it means sacrificing health or raw damage.

"Sack" boy for. . . the name

It entirely depends on the game for me, and whatever I end up enjoying the most in the game. I prefer to be a fighting type in most things though, usually like a warrior class or something similar game depending but if the magic system is fun in whatever it is, I'm down to clown with some wizard fantasy. I used to be more into 'rogue' type builds, but I think I've gravitated away from them over time with a few exceptions.

I always play the unconventional gimmicky troll weirdos that no one likes to play and usually are underpowered.
Love Robo Ky, Bridget and Faust in Guilty Gear +R (although Faust is pretty top tier)
Kohaku/Kohaku+Hisui, and the little silly cat that everyone loves in Melty Games
Played a lot as Super Novice and liked to try the most crazy stupid builds i could use in Ragnarok online, like Int Assassin, Solo Battle Healer, Auto casting Knight with low health, low defense, low attack damage, but full attack speed and a a ton of magic(i don't know how these builds are called in english).

I lose a lot but you can bet i'm always having fun lol

I like raw power. Sometimes that comes in form of a glass canon (Chun-Li?), other times can be a heavy height (Bowser or Ganondorf), or a rushdown character (Jozie Rizal), or a character that has that one move that is hard to hit but when it does it's super satisfying (Zelda or Ridley). Or sometimes instead of a move it's a mode (Phoenix Wright or Phoenix)

I hate zoners by the way, but I can't say I never felt the sadistic pleasure when playing as one
EDIT: I hate zoners specifically in Smash Bros, in other games it doesn't bother me as much

oh I saw this the wrong way

small and fast characters like toad
Any type of answer is fine, specific characters, builds, weapon choice, anything. Just curious to see what people vibe with.

Aesthetically, I dig characters who use Iaido or similar quickdraw sword style. DMC Vergil, Last Blade Hibiki, Under Night Yuzuriha etc.

Not big on fighters/barbarians, the 'i hit it with my sword' being your main action is..... kinda boring. It needs more variation than that.

"What are you going to do, scratch it with your claws?"
"That's all i know how to do..."

As such, I gravitate towards sneaky-rogue, and summoner. Get something to keep them busy while i pick off at a distance.

Pure summoner is fine too. Otherwise Sorcerer, or something that sounds cool.

Same. There's something deeply and utterly satisfying about entirely shutting the opponent down in a fighting game. My secondary character in Injustice 2 was Deadshot, and it was glorious.
Edit: I dropped my phone while typing that, ignore the unfinished post.

Stealth, even on RPG and shooter, whatever class or style I play I always gravitate toward being stealthy again, bad habit of mine.

For games that offer you multiple weapon choices, I try everything, before I eventually settled on spear/lance/polearm/pike etc.
Another bad habit I need to fix.

Fighting games are different, again I try every character, then pick 2 or 3 that I enjoy the most.

I also loathe looking up guide for meta builds, I'd prefer to do things my way, you'd be surprised how many meta player lost against me in Pokemon.

This is honestly the way to do it, prioritize your own preference or enjoyment over becoming another meta statistic. No sense putting meta above your own fun unless money is involved.

This is a very informative thread! Tells me a lot about my opponents friends.

I have this down to a science. After a gazillion hours of tackling fighters, action games & rpgs, I really have come to favor balanced characters. But it has to be the perfect balanced character.

I'm long past the days of glass cannon. Having a good health pool is severely underated, 'cause it stops game overs from completely idiotic random encounters (which every game has at least a couple of). I also want to be slightly more melee focused for a simpler time & less management.

Oh! But I want at least one magic/ranged option! Minimum one, no exception, helps across every game genre.

Female avatars usually have a better wardrobe, but if the majority of the players are in bikini armor I'll go male. Extra bonus if the dudes have a ducktail hairstyle (bless you Monster Hunter).

And as edgy as it is, dual anything is always much more exciting!

A bigass sword with a gun (that's my playstyle), like in Monster Hunter

Depends on the game, but generally either rush down or big satisfying hits. Not that these are exclusive, necessarily, but yeah.

Ragna Bloodedge would be the perfect fighting game example. Monster Hunter? great sword.
AYE MONSTER HUNTER ENJOYER ::poggurai

Basically anything that favors speed and tons of small hits rather than large meaty hits, especially an archery class. And I'd rather have a well timed counter with no defense if i misstime it rather than a classic defense like a shield just for blocking

Depends on the game and the options:
  • Custom character (general): Cute woman. I'm not looking at some generic dude's butt for the rest of this game.
  • RPGs (general): Thief, because I'm taking all the stuff. If there's no thief, then mage, because I'll maul the late game.
  • Fighting: Grappler, because so many people pick rushdown, and grapplers are a rushdown's worst enemy. Yes, run at the giant guy, little man; it's not like I'll take ¼ of your lifebar in 2 seconds or anything.
  • Particular to Xenoblade X: Samurai Sword & Raygun. They have the best late game arts, and they output the most damage. (Ok, technically Ghostwalker is the best art, but it's harder to use and you don't need to equip it on the MC if Elma is on your team.)
  • Final Fantasy 1: Master x2, White Wizard, Black Wizard. WW heals, BW supports, Mx2 punch everything in the face until dead. It's brutal, but efficient.
  • Eroge: Tomboy or adorkable. Barring those, tan girl if she's not gyaru (especially good if she gives off SEA vibes), mommy-aura if it's more aura than actual mommy, or pettanko if she's not loli. Seiso and sugoi dekai also hold a place in my heart, though they're often the vanilla options.
  • Racing: Fast acceleration. If I stop or slow down, I want to get moving again immediately.
  • Smash: Ike. Good priority, strong attacks, and has a very useful Up+B.
  • Roguelite: Anyone with really fast attacks, such as Queen Sigma in Vampire Survivors or Korone in HoloCure. (Although I find Peppino from VS hilarious to play.)

Depends on the game actually. I suppose in MMO terms like say FFXIV, I'm more attuned to DPS types like Dragoon or Samurai. Or even something like PSO, I have a character who's a hybrid of Hunter, Warrior and Force. Has to be something who excels in both side arms, main arms and pinch skill (i.e.: magic). I want to have my characters to be strong enough to wield forbidden powers, fast enough to draw and versatile to not only take a hit but throw one back with interest and all at the same time not be slogged down too much by armor and shielding.

I think the best way to describe what playstyles and characters I like are fairly balanced characters that have ranged options and allow for an aggressive playstyle.

The last part is especially true looking at how I've mostly been playing as Velvet in Berseria and using Fire Stance in Fate/SR.
