It's an excellent way to make their sacrifice meaningless and ruin all emotional investment in it. The worst part is that it's often done for no reason other than "This is a popular character!" Gag. Comic books and related movies commit this sin more than anything else as far as I know. Oh wow, Thanos snapped and killed half the world. That sure as hell isn't gonna stick.
