What is your thoughts on Widescreen being the standard?

I think the current standard is not wide enough!!!! I'm still waiting for a ball you can enter so its inside is completely made of screen so you can look and see every angle of whatever you watch... or make everything some VR technology so we can enjoy ∞ widescreen lolol. Imagine you connect your phone to your brain and you are "inside of the video you watch" so you can look everwhere!!! Hell, download the video to your brain and watch it from there!!! Future is in pre-designed digital imaginary technologists!!!!

It's usually objectively better, because TV shows don't need to put the actors a hair's breadth away from each other, and video games show more of the viewport.
But I do admit that I can get very nostalgic for 4:3 when it comes to certain games, or when watching old stuff like Star Trek TNG or The Simpsons which I rerun all the time.

The only bad thing about widescreen is that non-wide videos that were naturally produced before widescreen was a popular thing looks bad on widescreen lol.

You can correct for this by changing your TV or player settings to either not use the whole screen or to make the 4:3 image bigger and cut off part of the display output, usually.

It's cool but I still really like mobile ratio which I know would never happen. jak and daxter did it really well like that game is meant to be played vertically. Also btw a lot shoot em ups are so good mobile ratio too

i legit dont see a downside to widescreen
too narrow not much vertical space which can be slightly inconvenient for text reading or anything where you need more vertical space than horizontal

some coders even go as far as to flip their screen vertical lmao

newest laptop got 3:2 aspect ratio seem like the best compromise, 16/9 content looks fine on it 4/3 content looks fine on it

If I have one thing to be annoyed about on modern screens it's not the aspect ratio but the pixel density way too high everything is too small and I don't want to turn on scaling when I do everything looks off

But can it run Doom? ::omgdoom

That's Ultra-Wide!

It's 21:9 & Up

That Setup easily make a perfect DS/3DS.

It's like one of those giant TVs. Just shorter. And curved for viewing ease.

Has anyone ever been to an oldschool movie theater? The kind with a single giant screen? You couldn't see very well unless you were sitting far enough back to take in the entirety of the screen. I remember seeing Honey I Blew Up The Kid at a multiplex and I couldn't believe the difference in screen and room size. It's an entirely different experience.

But the principal is much the same with monitors and TVs. The bigger the screen the further back you have to sit to see the entirety of the screen easily. I imagine that's why that monitor is curved. The oldest TVs commercially available had small screens. Some also had a radio dial. AM only of course. And I believe back then AM required a grounded antenna.

I actually kind of miss the old square televisions. My grandparents had one of those old wood cabinet TVs that also served as a piece of furniture. It worked for decades. My grandfather used to repair it himself. He kept doing that untril it was completely dead. You can't so much with modern monitors and TVs. They're ususlly goners if they are damaged badly or malfunction.

It would be cool if there was more diversity in aspect ratios. Like the hell with it; let's do more 4:3 games with some really beautiful border art again, make those wide screen users still feel special :3

I don't mind it but sometimes I like to be cool and say something like "we should've never leave the 4:3 era". Like others said, I genuinely hate when 4:3 footage gets stretched and mostly by youtubers and streamers playing games on emulators. Its like modern audience is absolutely terrified of that blackness on the sides of the screen. Though in cinema it gets used in creative ways, which most people seem to like.

As others have said the only problem with 16:9 is when playing 4:3 content and it is stretched to fill that extra space.
However recent decompilations of retro games demonstrate how true widescreen genuinely enhances the experience of a game by having a wider view.
Games that do not have true widescreen should definitely be played in 4:3.
