What is your opinion on visual novels?

there's definitely some VNs i know friends are into that i ought to read, particularly Umineko which i grabbed on sale recently, but that one's a hell of a commitment and i'm always putting off plenty of other things first.

Yeah Umineko is not for light reading, imagine the size of it as an actual book! I heard stiens:gate is a good starting VN or Ace Attorney.

I think I dodged a bullet by only watching a let's play of Danganronpa, was the anime somehow worse or was is only by due to by product that most visual novel anime adaptions are terrible and only cash grabs?

I don´t dislike VNs at all. Just I don't have enough discipline to focus on a VN.

They're fantastic and I wish people that like Zero Escape would give the Infinity Series a chance even though they're pure VNs and not adventure games. Remember11 is one of the best experiences I've had with a game and it's Uchikoshi's best in my opinion (although Nakazawa Takumi contributed a lot to it as well).

Umineko is a hefty title to start with, if you're still looking for emotional roller coasters but in a reasonable timespan 999 is good to start with the add of minigames to engage even people not big on reading alone. There's also 428 Shibuya that's also pretty quick to get attached and not put down.

oh Umineko would not be first VN lol. One of my fave shorter VNs i played last year was Please Be Happy. some real great voice work in that which really does enhance the experience. same studio as Heart of the Woods which i had played prior on some friend's recommendation.
i do actually have some of the Ace Attorney collections that i'd never gotten around to though

Awful and/or hilarious if the writing is bad.
Unplayable nightmare if its translated/written poorly and the mechanics are unpolished. I can't name the amount of visual novels I've played that have crashed, didn't save right, glitched, skipped all text instead of just the things I've already read, etc.

If it weren't for this fact, I'd imagine I would have dropped Doki Doki Literature Club in an absolute instant, or this "VN" wouldn't have gotten the status it has now

I think the product goal to educate nulls the visual novel aspect even though VNs may or may not contain minigames.

I regularly read VN everyday 1 hour before sleep but I treat it like any other things that I do, I can take a break whenever I don't feel like it.

As for the VN itself, I like comedy so my pick would be Majikoi or Snow Sakura.

I've only played through a few VNs (namely Tsukihime, Witch on the Holy Night, a few Ace Attorney games, and Danganronpa 1), and I've generally enjoyed my time with them.

I like visual novels, but a mortal sin for me is when one of those doesnt have a fast-foward or skip option

This is important when different paths or endings come in mind and i already know whats the deal with the plot

The idea to button smash just to reach the point i want to get to see something new in a heavy text based game is.... ugh....

Also, is kinda sad how there is so many games that never got released outside of japan

Amazing! People may consider them games or not, but for me, they're even better than other genres, since it can express so much with so little in terms of "gameplay". I remember how flabbergasted I was in every Higurashi chapter, every moment I spent outside I just kept thinking what the hell was happening, and then there were so many twists it was a mental rollercoaster!
