I'm not sure I've seen one of these threads specifically so I'm makin it.

I really love listening to music in the terms of the "album experience". Listening to an album from front to back is the only way I listen to music. I feel like listening to music in this way really improves my enjoyment of the work in its entirety. Knowing how the songs fit within each other and in the context of the story or emotions the album is painting is the best.

So, share your favourite albums of all time! I know some of us might have trouble selecting just one album in particular, so feel free to share your favourite albums for different genres too if you can't narrow it down 😄

My favourite albums:
Nier Gestalt and Replicant Piano Collections

Not ordered, obviously, and much like my top 5 games, this list tends to change often, but I think for now I'd say these would be my top 5.

I actually had to sit down and really think about this for a good half hour, so I'd say it's a good topic. I'm not going to attempt an actual ranking or anything as I think that would probably take me like an entire day to narrow down, so here's my top 6 in no particular order.

Master of Reality, Black Sabbath
1751072659957.png
Yeah, I'm a little basic, Sabbath is one of my favourite bands of all time. Every song on this album is fucking fire, without exception. I mean come on, Children of the Grave, Lord of This World, Solitude and Into The Void; what else do you need. You can say the same about a bunch of their other albums, but this one is special to me even compared to Paranoid or their debut. It's the first album they downtuned on (to C#) so it just sounds so much heavier and darker, and created the whole schtick they then became known for. It's kinda funny, as after downtuning on Master of Reality here a lot of people seem to think they always downtuned in some sort of retroactive revision; I can't tell you how many tabs I still find for their first two albums that claim they're in C Standard (which they've never used, first of all) or how many times I've heard people say that IRL. Anyway, my personal favourite Sabbath album; Lord of This World is such a fucking slapper, dude.

Damnation, Opeth
1751073407206.png
An entirely acoustic clean album, and something I will never forget listening to the first time. Again, every song on this album is fire. Windowpane, My Time of Need and Death Whispered A Lullaby are my top 3. Opeth had some serious musical chops, and any time I hear someone try and say 'mEtAl MusIcIaNs DoN'T kNoW mUsIc' I show them this album among some choice others. Some great, haunting songs on this, basically. It's a disservice to yourself to not listen to this album at least once.

The Way of All Flesh, Gojira
1751074002071.png

This is one of the heaviest godamn albums I've ever heard, man. This and From Mars to Sirius are nearly tied for Gojira representation, but Way of All Flesh edges it out just ever so slightly. It's got some of the nastiest, grooviest riffs ever recorded by some hippie Frenchmen, Gojira's usual strange musical stylings with pick scrapes and discordant notes thrown in, and some absolute perfection in metal vocals. Art of Dying, Vacuity, Esoteric Surgery and Toxic Garbage Island are the real standouts to me, but every song is amazing.

Crack the Skye, Mastodon
1751076307792.png

Mastodon's masterpiece, to me at least. This is progressive metal at it's finest, using some very interesting elements combined with only the finest of catchy riffs. There's some seriously great melodies thrown in, some country style chicken picking on Quintessence, very specific and odd time signatures, and it's still heavy and interesting to listen to, unlike some of their later albums. It's also a very tight album, with only 7 songs and a crisp 50 minute run time. The title track, Oblivion, and The Czar are my personal favourite songs, but every song on this is fantastic.

Sonic Excess in It's Purest Form, Crowbar
1751075647947.png

This is the other heaviest godamn album I've ever listened to. This album just crushes you in all the best ways, like a sludge metal album should. It's brutal, but there's just enough layers to it to bring you back up a bit before the next chef's kiss riff hits you that much harder. Repulsive in It's Splendid Beauty, Lasting Dose (holy shit, Lasting Dose), Thru the Ashes, and Empty Room are my song recommendations. If you like just a huge wall of sound absolutely running you over, there's not many better choices to me.

Danzig III: How the Gods Kill
1751077133525.png

I'm down bad with Danzig, and this is their best to me. It's dark, just a little moody and grandiose and cheesy; the Danzig classic. It's a little more progressive compared to their first two albums, but not so much like their next two where it was hard to even kind of approach. It's got some bluesy riffing, some of Danzig's best vocal work, and even a few actually impressive arrangements. The title track, Bodies, Sistinas, and Godless are my picks here.

i love the write ups you did for this, youve def peaked my interest into listening to a few of these. specifically Sonic Excess, Damnation, Danzig III, and Masters of Reality

Alon Mor - Lands of Delight
Leyland Kirby - Sadly, the future is no longer what it was
b.michaael - Built2Crawl
Machine Girl - ...BECAUSE IM YOUNG ARROGANT AND HATE EVERYTHING YOU STAND FOR
Sewerslvt - Starving Slvts Always Get Their Fix
░▒▓新しいデラックスライフ▓▒░ - ▣世界から解放され▣
Jean-Luc Ponty - Cosmic Messenger

They're all pretty different from one another, all I can say is give them all a try if you can, they're extremely unique experiences.

Out of all of these I think Lands of Delight is definitely the album that works the best as a complete experience. "Sadly, the future is no longer what it was" is also great as a full package but it's extremely long.

I figured I had to do a little paragraph of my reasoning at least, not that I need much shoving to get talking about music. I'd recommend any of them obviously, just depends what kind of musical mood you're feeling at the time. Something a little lighter I'd probably say Master of Reality or Damnation (though that's pretty heavy lyrically wise), or if you just want to get utterly crushed by heaviness go Sonic Excess; I cannot stress enough how monumental that album feels when it hits you.

So here I am, barely having recovered after being sick and the first thing I do is ask @Waffles to do janitorial duties because of this thread.

so what's ur favourite album clippy? :D
Considering that I've heard thousands of albums at this point it's hard to pick one. The one I posted in the original thread is certainly in the running. So is this one:

Feel better soon, Clippy :)

I think we are gonna stop policing duplicate threads unless both newer and target topics are ridiculously new.

That worked when the forum was just starting out and people didn't even bother seeing if any of the 11 (lol) threads already created were a thing. But now that we are nearing 10K threads? I think we can let them slide.

Keep in mind that that's just my opinion, though.

i agree with this, plus with all the new members it's nice for visability of old topics that would just be necro'd without letting old members feel like theyre able to share again (at least thats how i feel)
also i totally forgot if this was even posted before, but now that im thinking about it i totally posted in that old thread

American Don by Don Caballero.

An incredible math rock classic, that has been a source of comfort and inspiration for many years.

IMG_4355.jpeg

Hard Hat Area by Allan Holdsworth.

I could have chosen a number of Holdsworth records for this list, such as Sand or Secrets, but this record is pure jazz fusion ear candy and I never tire of hearing it.

IMG_4354.jpeg
Deloused in the Comatorium by the Mars Volta.

A combination of progressive rock, dub, post hardcore and latin jazz that I adore.

IMG_4357.jpeg
The Unseen by Quasimoto.

This is definitely an album that should be listened to in its entirety. It has some of the best bass lines in hip hop.
IMG_4358.jpeg
Flowers of Romance by Public Image Ltd.

Similarly to the Holdsworth records, I could choose any of the first three PIL records, but to me, this one is unique in its ominous and oppressive atmosphere. Its focus on guitar and drums, with VERY sparse usage of bass, is kind of unique in post punk. I really think it stands out in the genre.

IMG_4359.jpeg
Evening Star by Robert Fripp and Brian Eno.

My favorite ambient album of all time.
The loops are fantastic, the atmosphere is incredible and the contrast between each side of the album is perfect.

Omg deloused. I love mars volta, specifically that album

the-wall-album-cover-1433840195.jpg

The first album I ever thought of as 1 big work instead of many separate songs.
I love Floyd but The Wall has a special place in my heart. The themes are always relevant and also have personal meaning for me, and the music is phenomenal.
I've seen the movie but, meh, I'd rather just listen to the album.

my favorites are
down town mystery.jpg

t's 12 inches.jpg

rippingtons.jpg

these 3 are the only albums i've ever listened from the first to the last track, without ever skipping a single song.

It changes over time, but this season:
Snail Mail is in heavy rotation. Highlights: Speaking Terms, Deep Sea Dive
Purity Ring make me dance. Highlights: all of it.
Hospitality rule. Highlights: Call me After, Sunship.
Cymbals Eat Guitars tap into something deep inside me. Highlights: 4th of July, Mallwalking.
Crumb cause psychedelia is a must. Highlights: BNR, Trophy.

Just a sample.
