The best one I’ve played so far is Annalynn, it’s only like five dollars on switch

I love beat 'em up games and pixel artwork, on top of it it's like Japanese highschool kid simulator. But personally I loved it because the story and situations were very similar to my middle-school experience lol.

The game doesn't have A to B gameplay. Yes it has a particular story but what can happen between them depends on conditions to unlock and certain triggers to trigger. It's one of those "I wonder what would happen if I had do X or Y" video game. You can encounter random situations that can change how the rest of the game is affected from minor things like getting a cat pet and how the story goes on. There is a branching story here reacting to what you did and what you didn't. In this game cruel time doesn't wait you, it goes on with you or without you. It's up to you to chase the time or sit where you stopped fighting in desperation. You cannot change your destiny, but you can change your journey.

Best is easily Shovel Knight. That game is pure game design bliss start to finish and genuinely as close to perfect as a retro platformer can get IMO.

Subjectively my favorite tho is Juiced! description says it's inspired by old dos games but it reminds me moreso of those mid 90s 16 bit platformers like Dynamite Headdy or the magical quest games where it's nonstop level theme changes with constant fun gimmicks and boss fights. I was wavin my pitchfork and torch around like a stereotypical angry mob when Nintendolife added it to the "shovelware" tag of their own Eshop lol.

Also shoutouts to Ichonoclasts for having possibly the best story I've ever experienced in a video game.

Interesting, I have heard many mixed things on this game but not one peep about the story, that comment makes it more intriguing.

Shovel Knight is definitely going to remain a classic for the rest of time, every single character story is almost as polished too, even Plague Knight mostly being a re-thread is super fun with his mechanics.

sakuna of rice and ruin and its not even close. the characters are all well developed, the combat is great and really fun and the rice mechanic is incredibly well done. plus the soundtrack is fire and also its just a really good game like it took me 39 hours and i never thought at any point that the game got worse i really think its the best indie game ever done and all the negative reviews were written by CIA gangstalkers trying to shut down a great game and failing.

I purchased a game back in November on Switch called Huntdown. It is a pixelated platformer but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

It hit the nostalgia feels pretty hard. There was a good challenge but not so annoying like some Indie games are nowadays with their difficulty spikes.

I highly recommend it!

@RanmyakuIchi have you played Slayers X yet? Beyond the parody aspect it's one of the most authentic retro FPS games you can play right now. Zortch is also really good.
I've played Slayers X and love it, it's so incredibly charming and nostalgic for the era it's parodying. Zortch is also great, and I dig it's N64 meets Shiny Entertainment vibe.
