For me, it’s Secret of Mana. It’s one of the most beloved SNES/SFC titles, but I found it to just not be engaging to me, with not enough of a scenario to keep me engaged in those crucial first few minutes. More than that, though, I just didn’t click with the gameplay. I hope I fall in love with it later in life though, as it’s beautiful!

Off the top of my head, probably eternal sonata.

Secret of mana is kinda meh until you get a full party, so i get where your coming from, doesn't help that the hit detection and invincibility frames take some getting used to.

I would have to say the Shining Force series since I generally dislike the tactical grid based genre but would really like to enjoy more of Sega's glory days RPGs that I missed out on. I can get into a couple of tactics rpgs like Final Fantasy Tactics and Ogre Battle Tactics, but everything else I tried loses my interests aka Fire Emblem, Disgaea, ect ect

Vandal hearts might be worth a try considering the ones you like, to me it sounds like your problem is more mechanical than type, but hey i could be wrong.

Final Fantasy 8. I just couldn't get into it

NEO: The World Ends With You

I looooved the original. Never understood why it even needed a sequel, but when I finally got around to playing it I just continued feeling "why did that even need a sequel".

I fear it's probably one of those RPGs where the first ten hours of it just Sucks because it wants to introduce you to all it's mechanics and bits slowly so people can digest it in a way that doesn't feel overwhelming, a lot of RPGs end up doing this to certain degrees, but I don't know if I want to bother.

Mainly because the combat was just so boring. There was simply nothing to it. The original game also had a simple combat system as well, but the system was soooooo weird and different that it made up for it. But this one doesn't have any of the weirdness that one had and it just felt like something was lost in the transition from quirky handheld game with weird controls to budget late 2010s Square-Enix release they rushed out the door and didn't care enough to even advertise (I didn't even know it had a PC port for the longest!).

It probably does pick up much later on with better pins and abilities, but I was bored.

Also the characters were simply too ignorant about their situation. I know they're trying to cover their true feelings that something is Deeply Wrong, but it came off more like they just didn't care. The way Neku reacted to what he was caught up in made more sense while the two bumbling stars of NEO just felt like they're just Stupid, and I stopped caring as well.

The first game just got to the point faster and did it better. One day I'll give it a shot and either force myself to get through it and end up regretting ever being interested in it or find out that I was wrong and enjoy it.

As someone who loves Secret of Mana, it has some serious problems. The way magic abilities stop everything to show you their flashy animations is at first a bit annoying, but you don't see it That Much. That is, until the game then decides that you better get used to it because it unfortunately makes casting magic extremely vital to the combat.

It makes you feel like they might as well should have made a turn-based RPG instead of making it an real-time action one.

The story itself is just okay. It can be charming, but it's one of those games where it feels like a Saturday morning cartoon where the plot doesn't matter and it's just an excuse to get the characters moving from place to place.

Skip it for Trials of Mana if you feel like you can't get into it. It's just immediately more interesting in both the gameplay and story. It's remake is also pretty good (I LOVE how they did the English voice for Charlotte. It's so funny. I love you Trials of Mana remake).

Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, I remember trying out the remasters on a cousin's ps5 and just being really bored of the whole thing. Nothing really hooked me into the game loop or the world, but I've heard they're very good RPGs. They also look right up my alley, so I just hope that when i played them, I wasn't in the right mind space

It doesn't help that SD2/SoM is somewhat disjointed plot wise because the translation was made under an extremely crunchy environment and a lot of it was cut.

Honestly, SD3/ToM (Trials of Mana) is just peak when it comes to Mana (IMO) and you might fall in love with the series if you play that. LoM (Legend of Mana) on the PS1 is also a beautiful thing despite having annoying snags.

Weirdly enough, phantasy star portable 2.

I've started the game multiple times, love the way it plays, and am generally engaged with the characters and story, then I just kind of... stop. for one reason or another. I just get burned out or something else comes up and I lose the save somewhere. I don't even dislike it, and I'm all for very repetitive games in general (hell, I defeated Baal in all disgaea games except 7 and I plan to do so) but for whatever reason it just doesn't push me to completion.

Yeah, Secret of Mana is weird because the battle system is basically the Final Fantasy ATB with more freedom. You usually have to wait until the gauge fills up to hit so it doesn't feel like a proper action RPG. It's also a bit semi-linear story-wise so it's not the most gripping story. Despite this, I think it's a decent game once you get into the flow.
I hate Seiken Densetsu III. I beat it many years ago, would never replay it.

The Last Remnant, I played it pretty far like 50+ hours total and I finished most of the side content too, it still didn't click with me for some reason, I do plan on coming back and try again but not in the near future.

Back during my 360 as a main console days this was my favorite JRPG to play, never beat it though. Though when I tried playing it again when it got rereleased on PS4 I just kept cringing at Rush and didn't get past the beginning

Fire emblem. I played most of blazing blade and I just got bored. I really like FF tactics and SMT Devil Survivor (which I haven't finished yet). I don't like the fact that you have to do everything in one mission (leveling up, buying items etc.) I wish you could do that between missions or have places to farm like the other games I mentioned.

Odin Sphere. I got it on sale digitally for PS3 years ago. The PS2 Classics version. I might just try it over from the start again. It just felt lacking and kind of frustrating. It's not the first side scrolling RPG I've played. But it was one of the least fun.

Grandia. I want to try again because I got close to the end then just kinda stopped.

And while it's not an RPG, Ico. I got it along with Shadow of the Colossus for PS3. I tried. I really did. But it's one big escort mission and I got frustrated with Yorda really fast. I actually started to cheer the shadows taking her away. I just don't do good with escort missions. But I guess the game would be kind of bland without something to do other than move blocks and light torches. I'll try again sometime.

Saga Frontier. I'm playing the remaster on PS5, starting on Red's scenario, but it's not grabbing me. A bit too slipshod.

The character you choose first will effect alot, blue and lute are pretty of open ended, asellus, emilia and red are extremely linear, T-260G or whatever he's called is something in between, riki is...wierd, only way i can describe it.

Planescape: Torment. I've started it twice, and just find myself slowly playing it less to the point of stopping altogether. One of my closest friends recommended it, and I'm positive there's an awesome experience to be found in that game, but I'm really having trouble getting to it. It's extra weird because I enjoy CRPGs, and the world this games built seems so cool. Maybe I'll try it once more after I finish my current games I've got going. Third times the charm, yeah?

Ys as a whole. The series seems perfect for me on paper but it never really grabs me.

I'm on my second attempt at playing Terranigma. It's just ok to me right now, but I'm still going to try and finish it

Final Fantasy XIII
I keep trying to enjoy it but my mind refuses to accept it

Ys as a whole. The series seems perfect for me on paper but it never really grabs me.
What games have you tried?
The series goes through massive changes over it's life to the point the games past 7 could be called borderline different games.

1-2 is bump combat, oath, origin and 6 are peak solo gameplay, 7-10 is party based.

When i hear people say i can't get into ys i tell them to try games with entirely different systems.

Atelier and Rune Factory. Tried Annie for DS and I've been hooked for over an hour.

What games have you tried?

I've tired Origin, Oath, and VIII. To be clear I did not dislike any of them at all, but I also didn't finish them. I think there's something about Ys' storytelling/presentation that doesn't fully grab me. But I'd like to give them another try someday.
