The movie adaptation of a book that I despise is Flipped.

I absolutely despise it because I read the book. They censored things, changed character names for seemingly no reason, cut out parts of the scenes from the book or shortened them, and the worst sin of all... They decided to not tell the movie in order. (Whenever there was something that they would reference later they'd go back to the part which they didn't show before for some reason and then jumped forwards to go back to the present part.) So yeah. What movie adaptations of books do you hate?

I fucking hate the adaptation of The Unbearable Lightness of Being as well as the book's author

I know it's not a movie and it's cancelled now anyway, but the Wheel of Time series. I think it was cancelled because it was playing both sides of the field. It was being multicultural to appease it's masters but it was also staying fairly true to the books in a lot of the storyline. It was probably getting too popular and polished and the moneymen wanted it shut down because it may actually give a bit of inspiration to the youth, despite the propaganda.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

If the issue was little changes just like in Harry Potter with merging characters, ignoring even eye color of Harry Potter or skipping events I would be cool. However the point of the book and important parts of the book changed a lot and as a result they shit into it just to annoy the fans lol. It's more like they were "inspired" by the book to develop an irrelevent movie but they still used the same name because one tiny stuff that whole story revolve around is similar and that's it.

Imagine watching first Harry Potter movie that Harry is 17 years old and at that age starting the school and whole movie is developed for cringe American youth out of Twilight BS lol. However the books are so fun and funny that you are supposed to read about a kid, not some young adult lol.

The Black Dalhia (Brian De Palma). I loved the novel and was impatient to watch it on a wide screen. But I should have known. If only because I'm not De Palma's biggest fan. 😅

Eragon.
The wheel of time.
Jurassic Park, not a bad movie but I want they use the book and not a PEGI13 script made for a Hollywood movie.

Duuuude... I love "Flipped" (the book) and I wasn't aware of this movie at all. It sounds like an utter disgrace, and the ultimate mistreatment for a generation-defining book.

A few years back I heard that Van Draanen's own "Wild Bird" was in the talks for being turned into a movie, but those conversations seem to have stalled. Considering how much I loved it, I'm glad it won't go anywhere.

But, to be fair, Van Draanen tends to write long books, so I'm not sure how well they can be adapted outside of a miniseries.

Just yesterday I watched Dune (1984). I'd just finished reading the book (incredible), and I was pretty interested to see David Lynch's vision of Dune, as he's one of my favorite creators and a real artist.

The film was pretty atrocious. A genuine train wreck. There was no real through-line, just a collection of scenes taken from the book but without context. It was like every time you blinked you had fallen asleep for 5 minutes and missed something important.

I already knew the history of the movie going into it. How executives meddled with it all the way through, how David Lynch disowned it and looked back on that period of his life with resentment. So I don't despise the film, but I do now understand and share David Lynch's loathing of uncreative money people having way too much sway in a creative-commercial endeavor.

Some time ago I commited myself to an experiment in which I would read a book and then knowing of upcoming movie adaptation I'll watch the movie and try to understand people who always say "the book is better". Well yeah, The Snowman was pretty bad and the book is better. They didnt even show the Slipknot concert in that movie, which could've at least add some value to it.

Absolute beginners, didn't watch the movie but God, this books sucks in any way

Player number 1 is no a literary masterpiece, but, Jesus, was it better than the movie. Spielberg really did not care about this project.

The new Dune movies. There's no way to explain to someone who has seen them, but hasn't read the book, that the book has depth. It's like, "but the plot is the same, right? How can some internal monologue change that?" How indeed...
The old film by Lynch, has the same problem, but few have watched it, so if's fine.
