Say the Dreamcast did really well and SEGA decided to make a successor for the 7th gen and subsequently the 8th and 9th gens. What do you think they would've called them, what would they look like, and what kind of features would they have to set them apart from their competition?

They'd probably repeat the exact same mistakes that every other major console developer has. ??
Tobeeeeeeey faaaaaaaaaaaare (if you recognize this joke I love you forever ?), it wasn’t their mistake, Sega of America and Sega of Japan were just constantly at each other’s necks all the time.
P.S: stop spraying yourself with a water gun, you might catch a cold!

To be honest surprised they stop after the Dreamcast and not the Saturn. Seeing that they sucked at making Sonic games on better consoles I wouldn't wanna think about if they made more consoles.

Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 disagree

I think it's not just about whether or not they can make consoles, like what @Yousef said for example. If consoles needs to be made, they'll have to trust and work together and learn to avoid any mistakes

Unfortunately, the reality is different. It is interesting to think about though

**Hot Take**

They only sucked later gen after the mega drive / genesis, if Yuji during the Saturn days focused his craft to bring sonic in to 3D rather then be a drama queen about his creation, which he stepped away from, then sonic would have turned out better imho.

Welp Yuji's wish to make other games gave us Balan and insider trading as his legacy now. *Cough sorry to say this, but Yuji gave so much disrespect to his fans by not continuing sonic when we needed it on the Saturn, as a result of that and Sega in fighting, they lost customer faith when they needed it most and damaged the brand imo. Yuji's failure to refine the character when it counted is why we get hit or miss stuff (06 and the like), rather then a more refine character.

I would argue that the Archie comics has did more to refined the character then him, and that's sad.

(not putting Archie comics legacy down from 90s to 2010s, they where good reads).

Why did you not love your child more Yuji?

WHy?....T_T

Sorry this cut deep for me..

Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 disagree
Adventure 1 and 2 where ok, but it was a walking sim for the most part, and very linear compared to other sonic games imo, you must be able to see that at least.

loved adventure and saw the potential of Sonic in the 3d space with it, but it lost allot of what made the 2d so good (multiple paths, hidden areas and items), allot was established with the 2d versions of the game.

For the Dreamcast to do well, the PS2 would needed to have been a total and abject failure first. We're talking about a serious timeline branch here, it would have changed the landscape completely for everyone else, too. Definitely something worth witnessing.

100% but for me, for the Dreamcast to have been successful, so to would the Saturn have needed to be.
As it would of allowed the Dreamcast more time to cook in the oven, meaning longer development time and potentially a competing system with the ps2, rather then the rushed to market system we got, as a result of bleeding money on the Saturn side, which led them to disrespecting the customer in the USA by leaving Saturn game releases in japan.

You're quite right, the Saturn did help dig the DC's grave even before it existed.

Retroactively, Sega has been doing stupid moves since the Sega CD, if you ask me; money sinks with very little actual return when it comes to strengthening the brand and continuing to build on the good faith their arcade pedigree and later the SMS and MD helped create.

The Saturn had all the makings of a true competitor against the PS1, but Sega mistreated its own creation and made no effort to acclimate developers to its particulars. Those that could draw out its power created masterpieces (Sega themselves, Camelot, Treasure, Capcom), but most couldn't be bothered.

100% and to add to why the most businesses didn't want to touch it, imo it was due to Sega competing with themselves. The 32x in USA vs the Saturn from japan. The general consumer will not invest so much money in competing products from the same company!

To this day, companies think people will magically make money appear, but it is heard earned, and harder earned for others. Meaning that only the few will pay in on loyalty alone. And those who do take the leap and have that level of blind faith, are soon burnt as a result. leaving a sour taste in their mouths and hole in their wallets.

In terms of power, you are on the money! It was a hard console to program for, and that difficulty meant lower quality output from some who wanted a quick return to market. This left only the truly skilled develops like those you mention to pick up the slack, and they did in a big way!

You totally defined me as a teenager. I had blind faith on Sega out of growing up with the SMS and MD (platforms that honestly deserve the love they get). The Saturn was my last attempt at believing, and while I love the machine, it never had a fair chance.

You and me both, you and me both!

I like to think that they really would've RAN with the Dreamcast's VMU concept in the future. Iterating on it to include new features - could've worked as a pedometer, like the Pokewalker - and passive wireless communication like the 3DS streetpass feature. Taking your chao out for a walk; training with each of your real world steps; exchanging gifts with other SEGA heads out in the wide world. I think that could've been cute!
