You know... which events would you like to see play out differently.

My three chief examples are:

- Daikatana staying on the Quake I engine and releasing for the 1997 Christmas season, exactly as it was meant to be. Looking a bit outdated, but otherwise working perfectly.

- SEGA releasing the SEGA CD but slashing the 32X, marketing the upcoming Saturn like crazy instead.

- Lunar: Dragon Song being slowed down on development, forfeiting its bid for becoming the first RPG on the Nintendo DS, but fleshing out its setting, story and mechanics.

What about you?

Bethesda getting curbstomped so hard for the horse armor DLC that no other company ever adopts the practice.
We, as gamers/costumers, have a long history of losing the most important battles without even realizing it, sometimes even outright desperately handing victory to the industry.

Perhaps that's why we now depend on a damn European Citizens Initiative for maybeee keeping what we paid for.

I want the alternative timeline that’s currently happening in Brazil where Sega beat Nintendo.
Sega pretty much won here in Europe too. It just didn't matter much because up until the Playstation we were a home computer hub.

My SEGA Genesis Model 3 was brought as an import from Brazil made locally by Majesco.

It can't be overstated just how much my brothers and sisters from that land love that one.

Nintendo works with Sony and releases the Playstation. Sega skips the 32X, focuses on the Saturn. NEC skips the PC-FX, releases the TurboGrafx-64 (PC Engine 64) and continues on as the 3rd console manufacturer. Microsoft stays out of gaming. The Dreamcast gets DVD functionality and a dual stick controller, stays competitive as a result. The Gamecube uses DVDs and an upgraded Nintendo Playstation controller. NEC and Valve work together on the Steam Box.

Simple: a timeline where the Saturn would have taken the PS1's place as the 32-bit powerfhouse and change Sega's fortune. Maybe add a bit of wallowing and groveling from Nintendo too, just for my delight.

Also the timeline where Stop 'n' Swop is fully realized

Bit of an off-topic thing, but I recall reading someone on a forum decades ago saying that it was possible to trigger that on Banjo-Kazooie, but that your game was permanently on that mode afterwards, even if you erased all your data. Didn't affect it at all, however.

Maybe BS, but I trusted the OP.

Maybe it's something possible to safely test via emulation.

What if Sega continued making consoles after Dreamcast?

What innovations could Sega’s console have offered?
Powerful hardware: 3.0 GHz processor, 1080p support, 2-4 GB of memory.
Innovative controllers: Motion sensors, AR, enhanced vibration.
Online services: Multiplayer, video and music streaming.
Multimedia features: Blu-ray drive, integration with social networks.
Partnerships: Exclusives and support for third-party developers.
Mobile integration: Smartphones as secondary screens.

The Hyper Neo Geo 64 is a terrific success, SNK keeps going strong through the 2000's, and games like King of Fighters 2004, Breakers Retribution, and Waku Waku 21!!! are beloved the world over.

That would have been interesting to see! also, you forgot Metal Slug 10.

I would love to try that, but I think you need a physical console to do it. I'm beyond rusted at this point, but I think it involved powering off the system and then quickly getting the cart in whilst the memory was still active (you had like five seconds to do so).

Mobile integration: Smartphones as secondary screens.
I can totally see that, considering the VMUs.

Duke Nukem Forever using the Quake II engine and releasing on time back in 1999-2000 or so. Another good game like Duke Nukem 3D and maybe he wouldn't have faded into obscurity.
