To be fair, it’s not like we can’t have intellectual debates, so here goes.
Tower of Babel showcases every aspect I dislike about the iron/dark/modern age of comics. It shows we didn’t really move on from edgy writing. Instead we only moved on from a completely different kind of edgy. A lot of post-90s writers fool themselves into thinking what they’re doing is deep just because they’re not doing what Robert Liefield has done which is a huge fallacy. (I’m not like liefield therefore I’m a good comic writer!!!). Damien Wayne is the antithesis of everything good about comics. Red Hood is honestly not that great too. However I would argue that Nightwig is actually a great step in the right direction… only for Orca and Kate Kane to ruin it all. Hey, Comm. Gordon is good so yay…?
I mentioned Batman being a victim of circumstance, and he is. Comic artists realized he no longer needs the blue to make him stand out, that it was finally possible to fully draw him in black but that privilege only ruined his aesthetic. They also realized a Batman with guns wasn’t a no-no anymore so red hood was birthed.
