One of the coolest parts about the PSP/Vits was that in the early years they were systems that you routinely saw get ports of full scale console games. On top of libraries of exclusices you could reasonably expect numerous console games to get the same treatment. It was a marvel to me that I could play near console-parity or at least mildly paired down versions of various console games. Tony Hawks Underground Remix on PSP and both PlayStation All-Stars and Need For Speed Most Wanted on Vita blew my mind back in the day!

With systems so capable, it wasn't uncommon to see people talking about games they hoped to see ports of. I'm curious what games y'all dreamed of having on the go that never quite came to be, at least not on PSP or Vita!

That Devil May Cry 1 PSP port or the supposed Sparda prequel never came to fruition. Capcom pretty much quietly canceled it without much fanfare, and hoped everyone forgot about it. You announced at one the E3's back in 2006 Capcom! If you didn't want to make it, you could've loudly announced like you did beforehand.

Also i think that they announced a Resident Evil game on PSP too in like 2009 and it was pretty much quietly canceled too

By that point, I had pretty much stopped buying PSP games, so I probably heard and ignored/forgot it.

From what I can tell capcom went all in on the psp at first with world wide releases, and pretty much gave up on it till monster hunter exploded on the psp in Japan, then they just focused on that.

We were supposed to get megaman powered up sequels on it, as in the rest of the series and same with maverick hunter x, there was a plan to remake the x series in that style. Then the psp did okay numbers worldwide and the games didn't do very well at all.

As for the game I wish got ported to the psp, would be an improved verison of stella deus, atlus's FF tactics. An improved port with soome QOL improvements and a more recent and much better dub and it would have been great. It sadly did absolutely shoddy numbers.

I think that also the PSP piracy contributed to that since it was jailbreaked early on it's life cycle.

Pretty much, I recall that the homebrew scene grew massive early on in that scene.

I was even indulging in it myself with the liberty city first day release copy and , if I am recalling correctly, an injection method got me 3.30 hen with ease way back when.

Oh wow, I had no idea this was ever even announced. Even as a Monster Hunter fan I always did wish Capcom supported Sony's handhelds a bit better, so hearing that a whole ass DMC game/spin-off was canned early on is a real shame. The PSP God of War games showed us you could do some really sick stuff with action games on the PSP if you knew the hardware. Hell Dante's Inferno on PSP was a pretty amazing version!

Yeah, I have no clue how true the reports were but I do remember it being frequently said that a number of publishers pulled out of the PSP after a few years because despite the hardware selling super well, the software did not.

In Japan since piracy is much more taboo it didn't seem to bother most eastern devs with eastern-focused IP, but for companies that were trying to target other regions it seemed like there were diminishing returns.

Ghostrider on PSP ran pretty good too.

Bloodstained. I think it would have been a good port, it was being worked on by Armature who also handled the Vita ports of the MGS games.
I definitely got a little sad when they cancelled that version cause thats the version I backed the Kickstarter for. Considering how rough the Switch version ended up though it is almost certainly for the best that it got cancelled. If nothing else, at least we still got the stellar Curse of the Moon on Vita...

Final fantasy 12 goddamit
I feel this one heavily, especially with how the structure of the endgame grind lends itself so well to on-the-go minisessions. It was annoying enough not getting Type-0 HD on the Vita (especially when it was accidentally announced for the Vita during its reveal) but FFXII launching too late in the Vita's lifespan for SE to want to port it was such a bummer. The PSP was the greatest place to play Final Fantasy as a franchise for a very long time so it is a shame that the Vita only got FFX HD and World of Final Fantasy, even if I do really love the latter.

With the way they released the GTA ports i was so sure that we were going to get GTA San Andreas on the PSP. I was ready to follow the godamn train while riding the train.
That would have been wild. I never played Liberty City Stories but San Andreas Stories would have been awesome to see! I wonder why it never happened considering how beloved San Andreas was.

I remember one thing that got me slightly excited for the Vita before I owned it was seeing footage of Black Ops Declassified - it looked so close to the console game, and the crappy DS port of Black Ops had a Zombies mode! Surely I'll be able to get the game and play some handheld Kino and Five!.. Or... Not! Huge missed opportunity to not go the portable Zombies route - come on, man, even early Android users had it! Why not us?

Certain series were suspiciously absent from the PSP and Vita:

- Dragon Quest was limited to Builders everywhere, and Heroes II in Japan... No classics release of DW7, and no ports of any other games; while the DS got all the Monsters Joker games, 9, and Zenithian trilogy remakes; and 3DS got even more Monsters, new versions of 7 and 8, and a reworked port of 11.

- Mega Man went the parity route, which I never really understood... Yeah, the DS couldn't have handled Maverick Hunter X or Powered Up, but the reverse isn't true for ZX and Star Force. Obviously by the time of the Vita and 3DS, they weren't making new Mega Man games at all anymore... But 3DS still got exclusive access to the Legacy Collection! (Though I guess we still had access to the PS1 ports and other games like X4-6 and Legends 1-TB, so that's still pretty good.)

- Megami Tensei started out with the parity route - DS got Strange Journey and Devil Survivor 1 & 2, while PSP got Persona 1, both 2s (in Japan, we only got Innocent Sin), and a stripped down port of P3... But then next generation, 3DS got remakes of all the DS games, Devil Summoner Soul Hackers, SMT IV & Apocalypse, and Persona Q 1 & 2... A veritable feast, while Vita only got 4 Golden and... The Dancing games, if you count them (I don't). It's odd that the handheld I consider a little more "grown up" gets all the "high schooler friends" games while the kiddy 3DS has all the post-apocalyptic stuff.

(ATLUS in general loved that 3DS because it's a smorgasbord of Etrian Odyssey too; Vita had to make do with Mary Skelter.)

- Sonic evidently really hated the Sony side of the coin, because all we got were the miserable two Rivals games... Nintendo wasn't exactly jam-packed with the series' absolute best (at this point), but they still got Rush, Rush Adventure, Dark Brotherhood, Colors, and a Classics Collection; then 3DS got a scaled-down Generations and some Sonic Boom lites. SEGA really saw no reason whatsoever to bring any of that to the Sony systems, for reasons I'll never fully understand.

In general, the Vita is not as much of a failure for ports as the PS4 and 5 have been (PS1 and PSP classics helped soooooo much), but I think a couple more major exclusive ports could have made a huge difference... Portable versions of inFAMOUS 1 & 2, Demon's Souls, and a crossplay-enabled Fat Princess could have been so much fun. Throw in some better third party stuff like Persona 3 Azure and a console-level-accurate Sonic Generations, and you're in business.

Didn't have either. I just wish this game LEFT the PSP
