Anime What are your thoughts on Dragon Ball GT?

Great OP song, great ED songs... everything else is bad (especially the ending) there's a reason why it has very low ratings and even the proyect to make a manga was cancelled.
You say there is a reason... but sometimes people are just wrong. The majority can be wrong as well.

I'd already watched all the Dragonball Z movies by that point so GT wasn't really that weird and off by comparison.
I've always been a fan of the weird (and obscure), so for GT to be "different" than DBZ, somehow made it more interesting and exotic to me. Don't quite know how to explain it.

@MegaHiro91
Imagine saying that DB's target audience (Japanese people who generated economic revenue for the franchise) is wrong to consider GT a spin-off failure.

It's true that just because the majority believes something doesn't mean that something is good, but in this case, from a business point of view, GT didn't appeal to the target audience, ergo it was a failure.

Being the target audience doesn't mean that they have more authority about something.

GT didn't appeal to the target audience, ergo it was a failure.
And if something has success not from said target audience shouldn't that count?

I just found the first four hours uploaded to YouTube... Time to slay this childhood dragon ;D

@Ikagura
Yes, they do. The anime recoups its investment and generates profits from the sale of Blu-rays/DVDs of the series and from the sale of official merchandise related to the franchise. At that time, all of that material was only sold in Japan, and only Japanese fans paid for it.

Yes, that target audience did have the authority to define whether GT was successful or not because they are the ones who generate profits.

From a business point of view, it's useless. For example, anime studios know that in Mexico a lot of anime is consumed, perhaps even a little more than in the US, but that's irrelevant to them if that consumption isn't matched by revenue.

You want to pretend that GT is one of those works that was misunderstood in its day and years later people are starting to really appreciate it.
That's not the case with GT yet. It's still a spin-off that failed among its target audience, and if people are still talking about it, it's because of that and the SSJ4 design.

If its few fans started to reappear, it's only because Super altered the lore, making it impossible for GT to be introduced into the canon, which is irrelevant since DB ended the moment Toriyama died.

GT is interesting and sometimes fun but I don't think about it often, but I also kinda view Super the same way if I'm being honest.

GT had some neat ideas that where wasted in every possible way

The universe tour was the main thing, Goku needed to visit other planets that from the Z saga many time pointed out how earth wasnt worth it compared to the rest of the planets out there (at least in the Saiyans and Freezer point of value)

But then, Goku was turned into a kid when there was no need at all. They said it was to nerf him, but everyone that knows Goku will point up that he NEVER fights at full power and instead goes up slow as he like to battle at the same level until stuff gets out of hand

Another problem with the kid stuff, the moment they enter the machine planet the whole power level bs returned since the general there was strong (or stronger) than Majin Buu as Goku stated (again, i call bs). Not to mention that the enemies he faced had a gimmick that made the battles harder

There was no need for him to be turned into a kid. Also they ruined Pan and put everyone else into the bus of "help when needed" or almost never since they get their ass beated until Goku gets back

The grant tour was the intro for the Baby saga and the Super 17 part was the intro for the Shadow Dragon saga

Oh, and i like to question the part of Super 17

And i ask: Who decided to make Goku a beam spam loser in the battle with the Android that absorbs energy?

Seriously, a seasoned martial artist like Goku forgot how to give punches and just spend the whole fight using ki attacks (and to "test" if his strongest Kamehameha could work). Did he also forgot his fight with the ugly ass android that give him the same trouble in Z?

The Shadow Dragon was a cool idea that got wasted because they rushed the whole thing to end it as fast as possible. Reason for why we got so many bad fights with the dragons (can i point up how bad was "Tornado Goku"?)

4 Star was cool, 1 Star was a smug ass that learned fast to not let Goku do stuff

And finally, the ending with parts of all sagas (well... almost. Only Baby shows up in it from the GT saga) was the best part of the whole thing. It was really "the end" of Goku story

As a side note, here in Venezuela GT is just as popular as the original DB and Z. We got reruns from all of them in local channels

They sometimes rerun super, but skip Kai for some reason

But then, Goku was turned into a kid when there was no need at all.
I really, really hated that.

Felt like nostalgia bait to try and lure back OG fans who weren't pleased with Z or had long stopped watching -- so soulless.

Still love the SSJ4 design and some of the fights.

Baby - Super C17 were cool.

and i like the final idea of the dragon balls being corrupted for being used for wathever reasons.

Show have a lot of flaws thought.

Same with Goten to be honest. I'm glad he became his own character afterwards.

If it was for me I think Goku should've stayed dead for good post-Buu.

I absolutely hate Dragonball GT and Super. Nothing will ever beat the original Dragonball

Cool badass ideas, especially for every single arc (Dragon Balls research scattered in all universe, Baby Vegeta, Super-17 idea even if the actual 17 was forced to be put evil when there wasn't any reason at all, and ofc the evil dragons). It's just all very poorly executed.
The series is still way too overrated for my tastes, people should adknowledge more og Dragon Ball, especially from the first Budokai Tenkaichi tournament, the Red Ribbon, second tournament and King Demon Piccolo arcs.

Toriyama himself was disappointed at how Z turned out to be his most popular work for the wrong reason that had a lack of what his original work was

Reason for why Super at the start was a little different than Z (Goku was more of an adult child, Toriyama humor, fights where less crap ton of punches/kicks/beam spams)

The return of Jaco and Arale where the mark of Toriyama he hoped fans could get interest in his other works. But DB will always be his iconic serie

GT was in the hands of people that didnt know what they where after and the plot fell all over the place

Super-17 idea even if the actual 17 was forced to be put evil when there wasn't any reason at all
I'm a bit curious why 17 and 18 never thought about fusing since they are close power-wise.

In fact "Super Oob" which fused with Buu was sadly hyped yet he got defeated fast...

I'm also genuinely wondering why Pan was unable to become super, too little Sayan DNA?

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot should've gotten a sequel/prequel/spin-off imo.

Something like Dragon Ball Origins but as a bigger and fully fledged RPG adventure game.

Worse, they decided at the time to make her be the one that needed to be rescue by Goku all the times. The whole blood mix falls when Goku Jr and Vegeta Jr where able to get it

For that reason, and only that reason, she ends up being with Goku during the Shadow Dragon saga while Trunks got kicked to the bus like the rest only to show up and be beated.... like the rest

Uub also got it dirty. He was placed as the possible next main hero only to be wasted the moment he returned

That alone made the end of DBZ all for nothing

The whole blood mix falls when Goku Jr and Vegeta Jr where able to get it.
Seems like another bias where only males of the species could turn super somehow...

Also I dislike these names, they're not creative (at least Gohan and Trunk were fitting the themes of food and underwears).

Pan name is a mix of being related to both vegetables (saiyans) and something related to demons (Satan family)

Also, Super gives us that Bra/Bura also has a saiyan name that Vegeta wanted for her (a very different story about Trunks). But Bulma name her first to go with her family name

I think Trunks had an issue with his name just as how in the original DB Bulma knows her name is weird

The opening of GT is magical, the series has really cool ideas but in execution its a 50-50 for me, the design of the SSJ4 is so great and iconic, but i think Ubb deserved something better and i hate everything related with the Super Android 17 arc.
Also i like seeing how the Dragon Ball characters have grown after the Majin Buu saga, and the ending of GT is very emotional (although, thank god Goku Jr. and Vegeta Jr. aren't canon)
