For example, do you prefer to play games through a console or emulator, or would you rather play more often through your phone or handheld?

I think with me it depends on how much time I have. If I have more time and know I won’t be interrupted, I like playing on either my consoles or laptop through emulation.

If I just want something fast to fill a few mins of the day, I’ll play a cheap retro handheld or a GBA game through Retroarch or something on my phone.

I only have my PC and a NGPC here, so those are the ways I play now. If I'm playing on a phone, it's a dedicated mobile game. I'm not into touchscreen controls and I don't want to carry around some clip-on controller or whatever, but those play sessions are never long any more anyway, so it works out ok.

My pc and a portable console (currently my 3ds) in terms of console gaming i prefer batocera machines but i have a switch for Mario kart and mario party, other games too but i don’t play that much on the switch these days

Desktop. The only handheld I use is NDS Lite with R4. In the past my primary setup for retro games were on actual console hardware, these days they're not connected besides a few (3DO, Switch, and PS4).

For me it's on a case-by-case basis. Like I love the energy of playing on real consoles, especially playing ROM hacks through like Everdrives and stuff like that. I'm a huge N64 fan so that's big for me.

But as much as I love the Gamecube, I prefer to play that on Dolphin because you can do texture mods, widescreen hacks, etc. While I usually prefer how games look on a 4:3 TV, something about widescreen Gamecube upscaled slightly just looks really nice.

I've moved almost everything I play onto Retroarch on my MacBook Air. More recently I've been dipping my toe in the Madoka gacha on my iPhone.

I've been really desirous that we hit some critical threshold in generalized performant emulation so that we can simply leave Windows behind for good. Presently enough stone cold classic doujin games and other curiosities are still trapped on Windows that it makes it difficult to hard exit. I do have Crossover and experiment with it regularly but find it's just not quite responsive enough for the games I want to play (shmups). I think Apple could make this happen if they were even somewhat more committed to accomplishing platform neutrality, but as it stands it remains case by case.

Currently I retain a Windows PC for Steam and whatever archival works (Touhou, FFXI, Phantasy Star Online). I would very happily trade that for something like a Steam Deck next time around should this meta shift. I've heard Valve's brought in Codeweavers to advance Proton for SteamOS. In the long run I think the work being done across Valve and Apple will accrue across Unix and Linux until Windows is just no longer viable in civil society.

For me it's 100% portable with PSVita and 3DS; I owned a ps2 long ago and sold it when I realized I wasn't using it anymore (but after playing some great game), almost same story with xbox360, I bought it cheap and used just to finally play two titles I had my eyes on and then I sold it. I don't find myself in playing on tv, I totally prefer portable, you can put the system in sleep mode whenever you need and you can also carry it in another room if you need to.

Lately I have centralized all my emulators on a windows PC connected to a big TV with Retrobat . All the navigation is done with an 8Bitdo wireless controller so the experience is closer to a console than a PC.

I've got a pretty big preference for playing games on a handheld when I can, it's just the most convenient way of playing video games IMO.
It's only since we got access to affordable (ish) handheld PCs that I've been able to spend most of my time doing it, though.

I do a mixture of console and PC gaming, so having access to a working PC previously meant either setting up a laptop or desktop to get major gaming done.

I always liked to play then on consoles, since the day I started working. I'm a keeg, so PC gaming it's not even remotely my thing. I could never be able to build up one, and now that I'm broke I play what I can on my laptop.
A keeg? As in the opposite of a geek (geek spelled backwards)?
I just learned a new word.

When I was a teen, I used to burn the batteries of my Game Boy Color. Now I just like to sit down, relax and enjoy my games infront of a huge tv. Gaming on my phone feels tedious to me.

I don't really need a console these days since I mostly play retro stuff or indie titles. My laptop can handle all of that.

I’m all over the place, lol.

  • I play retro emulators, indie games and what AAA games I can on my MacBook, connected to an HD monitor in my office.
  • App Store games on my iPad,
  • Retro emulators on an Android Tablet and Android phone, both dedicated entirely to that purpose.
  • I also have a soft-modded Wii that plays all sorts of retro consoles hooked up to an old CRT TV.
  • I have a number of retro emulation handhelds and a real DMG Gameboy I play for short jaunts / on the toilet.
  • And I also have a Switch for modern games and ports. Hooked up to my main TV.
  • And a Mac Mini for more retro emulation and computer titles, also hooked up to my big tv.
  • I also have an old windows PC for old windows games and OG Xbox emulation. Hooked up to a teensy tiny 12-inch LCD monitor.
My preferences for any and all of these setups is laying on a couch/hammock, etc. and playing with a controller. I get tired of sitting in an office chair after a while.

What do you play on phone?
If i wasn't busy studying i would emulate everything on PC , emulation really all Final Fantasy games i played which are 1-9 and tactics were played on phone , every PS1 title i played was on phone oh and WarCraft 2 on phone using PS1 version (wasnt smart idea to play RTS on phone especially with PS1 emulator controls) after im done with FF3 which i have reached the final dungeon and will start it tmr i will play parasite eve

My preference is for Original hardware Hooked upto CRT TV, You just cannot replicate the the look of a CRT on an LCD no matter what you use..its just not the same...
All my original hardware is connected to various Crt's from 14" to 32", With my Amiga 500's hooked upto Original Amiga Monitors..
i have replaced consoles optical drives with ode's.. such as
Dreamcasts x2 GDEMU
Sega Saturn with Mode and Fenrir.also have Saroo with another
PSX has Xstation installed
Gamecubes.. 1 with GCLoader, 2 with Picoboots,
Ps2 currently changing my setups !
My cartdridge based systems such as Megadrive,N64,SNES, ect all have Everdrives/Summercart..ect

I have various Emulation setups with Batocera/Retrobat with Mini pcs and 2 dual xeon Workstations
Lots of Handhelds and old laptops used too many systems to list.....
Emulation based stuff is great for convenience and easy of use and taking up less space too !!!!
but can be time consuming setting up and configuring stuff which i find tedious and boring to do..

All in all both ways have there pros and cons, and there really is right or wrong way to play games, just play whatever setup you prefer and enjoy the games you play.. !!

I have a game or two on my phone ,if I'm tired I play those but ,if I have some energy I'll pay on my pc

PC with all the heavy stuff, including emulation, Phone for GBA Emulation, currently on Planescape Torment Enhanced on PC and Yggdra Union on my Phone, also building my Pokemon Team on Emerald to fight a friend. Good times overall.
