What are your favorite romhacks?

i recall a gun toting organisation member with a ponytail and some swagger was edited to have his weapon resemble a proper firearm less, among other small changes

There are many good hacks out there. The first Double Dragon for the Genesis is a great conversion, but the hack made it even better. Double Dragon II isn't a bad game, it just has terrible controls! The MD version, even with the hack, is mediocre (the conversion, not the hack). Golden Axe Plus is spectacular, especially for 32x. I've always said I was hoping for an improved Altered Beast hack, even if only for the Genesis; there are plenty of them. :)

P.S. It's a shame that many shoot 'em ups and some conversions are single-player only.

Some of the romhacks over the years that have made me say "wow" are

Ys 4 TG-CD and Bulk Slash Saturn - Fan translations are awesome, fan translations that also fan dub a game? That's just incredibly impressive.

SMZ3 - There are tons of randomizers out there, but the smoothness of combining two amazing games into one has me coming back to it over and over again.

Also any mod that adds multiplayer to a game that didn't have it, being able to play Mario 64 split screen on real hardware 🤯

My favorite romhacks are the following:
  • Aria of Sorrow Alter
  • Dawn of Sorrow Definitive Edition+
  • Metroid Spooky Mission
  • Metroid Deep Freeze
  • Sonic 3 Complete
  • Big's Fishing Derby
  • Smash Bros. REX
  • FFVa: Custom Classes
  • F-Zero X Climax
I really need to look more into cool romhacks tho x)

Unfortunately not on CDromance but i love Rockman 4 BCAS (Burst Chaser Air Slide). Its basically Megaman 4 with new music and new harder level layouts, and mega man moves faster and can slide in the air.

You know what? In all the hacks that have been done, no one has ever considered making a key improvement to After Burner II for the Megadrive: adding chrome to create the horizon!

Recently downloaded and beat after lots of struggles Megaman Revamped

A cool Megaman 1 Romhack that fine tunes the game, making some subweapons better (Like aiming the Cutter and making the bombs detonate as soon as they hit the floor) while making the generic settings of Vanilla become as vibrant as the ones from 2 Onwards and the cherry on top is a (Crude but still...) Get Weapon screen with Powered up's weapon get theme, that said the game is harder, so be not afraid of cheesing it or even savestate

Thanks for reminding me of the existence of that romhack which would help a lot to make MM1 on par with the rest of the NES games.

I'm only now dipping my toes into mods, so I've started with something simple: an HD texture overhaul for Pandora's Tower, which can be accessed here.* It's been mind-blowing to see how much visual improvement a texture pack can grant. As much of a fan as I am, Pandora's Tower debuted on the Wii, so the graphics are...not great. The textures were considered ugly even back in 2013 ?

This got me wondering about other folks' experience with emulation mods. Which ones do you love? How has it affected your gaming experience? Feel free to flex your favorites, include links, screenshots, etc.
*Unfortunately, all the image links for the before/after screenshots are broken ::sadkirby
I didn't know this game existed back then, nor Last Story, so I was gonna emu them :D Currently on the prowl for an undub. Am super excited.

Nude mods 👍
Lewd mods 👉 👌
Mods that enhance the game or make it ridiculously butt-ass hard if the original is butt-easy.

I feel like many modders are making those badly balanced.
Not just modders, but the industry itself. It seems to me they would rather make games that are more challenging than fun, but it sometimes goes the other way around. I want balance, dammit!

Then again, I hardly find any game to be either, anymore. That's why I end up doing ridiculous and insane challenge runs. 😅

Maybe it's because of all the Seer I've been watching. Must have seen each of his Final Fantasy videos at least 4 times, now.

i've seen nearly each of those videos about 20 times now. his content is amazing.
i've been working on a challenge run of ff3 for the psp because of his videos. it is insanely hard.

Oh yes, one of the runs that will have most people reset many times. Many, many times. I mean how are you supposed to know the first time how many items you're gonna have to grind for in the goblin cave, until you're already in the thick of it.

Some games are simply not meant to be played certain ways, and playing them in those ways anyways, can be fun.

Emulated huh? well then I'd probably say as of recent, DK64 tag anywhere mod.

my challenge run isn't quite as hard as his. if i tried that rule set on the 3d version; i'd be stuck just after escaping bahamut. there are no glitches to get pass the required spell sections. there is supposedly an item duplication glitch in the game, so some things never change. i haven't used it, mostly because i got too bored reading about it.
i've seen this a lot in some videos that i watch; playing botw blindfolded, pokemon but don't use anything with the letter 'a' and 'e' in it; use only freelancers to beat ff3, solo character runs. the challenges are insane and fun to watch. i've been doing no death runs in pikmin for quite sometime. it can get quite hard, but very rewarding; especially when the game is dead set on you losing at all costs.

If Nintendo were smart they'd have released the original Final Fantasy 1-6 in their online services.

I see those Pixel Remasters looking like RPGMaker Final Fantasy and I don't want to touch 'em, even with a long, sharpened stick.

I don't know why this whole 'make new games that look like old games' shtick became a fad, but it fucking sucks and I hate it.

you don't have to be smart to run a business.
yeah, i thought that they looked like rpgmaker as well.
it harkens back to a more simpler time; when everything was much more to the point, not overly drawn out and overdone to oblivion.
earlier games were nice and simple:
plumber rescues damsel from giant monkey
blue robot punches angry old man in the face
four strangers end a time paradox and save the world
yellow guy eats dots and ghosts
a snake with cigarettes and a bandana saves the world from nuclear war
elf man beats up manbearpig
you know; simple, easy to follow plots and likable characters.
nowadays, everything is about super ultra hyper-realistic michael bay funded level graphics and boring politics [not the cool kind like in metal gear], uninspired stories, no sincerity in telling stories; just copy and paste everything. lame characters, drab aesthetics and so on.
i don't blame game companies on trying to use the nes and super nes kind of graphics style for their games. that's what people gravitate towards these days, and they do look genuinely better than the game where every strand of hair is rendered on some random npc no one is going to notice or care about.
