As someone who generally tends to have preconceived notions against remasters or remakes, the ones I enjoy and pretentiously claim to be the exception to the rule usually feel pretty stellar, but they're sometimes hard to talk about due to the fact that they're based on older games, and usually on classics, so that Old vs New discussion always occurs.

Please feel free to use this thread as a sanctuary to talk about your positive experiences with remakes or remasters of games! Any particular games you'd like to share with the class?

My favorite remake of all time is probably Ducktales: Remastered
89a0c73bcf822f08fda8410c42ac5fe0.jpg

Probably as close to a perfect remake as possible in my opinion, and the new additions fit perfectly.

A few others I like are Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap, Demon's Souls, Maverick Hunter X and the 3D version of Final Fantasy 3.

the pokemon ruby/sapphire remakes for 3DS were sooooo good, also the last pokemon games i really enjoyed (that werent romhacks)
It felt like a progression of the remake standards heart gold/soul silver started, where instead of just creating a 1:1 remake they also flesh out the world and mechanics to be more in line with that current generation. Love the character redesigns (archie my beloved), the post game, the UI was really cool, i could go on lol
I was hoping they would keep this formula for future remakes but the diamond/pearl switch versions (along with the pokemon go gen 1 tie-in games) made me feel like the bar for quality has dropped significantly for remakes in the last ~10 years or so

Oh my god I completely forgot Pokémon HeartGold.
Yeah that one definitely takes the cake for me as it's one of my favorite games ever lol
Really liked Omega Ruby too!

To this day I pray for a DT:R remake of Chip and Dale.

Favorite remake/remaster?
Iunno, probably Trials of Mana, was a great game despite square's missteps.

Trials of mana, they just made a whole new game basically, literally so much replay value
but definitely play the original SNES version! especially since it's 3 player co-op!

squares newer "remasters" make me sad, the FF tactics remaster is already a flop , no psp extra content, no balthier from ff12 or the character from A2, none of the additonal content from WOTL version
pixel remaster having NONE of the newer content, like absolutely none
FF1 2 and 4 have much more content on: GBA, PSP, and the old mobile versions (before Pixel replaced them) FF3 3d was a better game (to me, it was different from old FF3 a lot)
and the old FF5 android looks SO MUCH BETTER THAN ANY OTHER FF5 VERSION, no i don't mean pixel remaster, i mean the version BEFORE that released, it's no longer available to purchase, thanks square!
and FF9 "remaster" !? they did freaking NOTHING, the low res background are still lowres!!
if you're gonna play FF9 NOW, look up the moguri mod, it's absolutely AMAZING and fully fan-done, fans did what square enix didn't!

there's Sonic origins, which is just the better versions of Sonic 1 2 3 and CD, all the mobile port features, widescreen, extra options and different cheats, knuckles in sonic 1, tails and knuckles in CD, Amy in all 4 games, sonic 3 items in sonic 1 and 2, removing speed caps from 1/2, spindash in 1,
an extra zone in sonic 2 (cut level they restored) retrying special stages, and then the challenge missions are quite fun. there's no better way to play those 4 games that i can see.
sonic x shadow generations was also quite good (sonic generations barely changed but they redubbed and remade every story scene)

persona 3 reload is a good remake, especially for anyone who never played it before. it modernized well, using mechanics from persona 5 like the network menu (to see what other players did in their limited calender time) decent amount of new dialog and scenes especially the night time (there's at least 6 new hangouts with every party member, at least 3 new scenes in the story, one optional as F) and the redesign of Tartartus the games 260 floor dungeon, which on the original was the same appearance and design throughout all the floors (randomized floors but still)
on reload every section looks ENTIRELY different, much more style and alive.
now, only thing that was lacking is the entire female main character thats only available on PSP and worth playing through as her, it's more than a skin-over, whole DIFFERENT story scenes and dialog and of course different dating romance parts, whole different soundtrack when playing female MC, different main weapon, and some of the social link stuff is different, it was worth a full replay, i played P3 portable FOUR times through there was that much to do until i was "done"
the extra episode aegis was originally part of Persona 3 FES, they made it a seperate DLC here, not gonna lie its a dick move to make people buy that individually.

Remakes/remasters were always a thing especially because it wouldn't make sense to leave a popular game on previous gen consoles when people can enjoy it on newer gen consoles.

That being said I have favourite ones that I'm glad they got remake/remasters by excluding most popular and obvious ones that are more like re-release "remasters":

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion (That's how a remaster is done yo)

Baroque (I'm amazed same vibe ensured with 3D graphics and remaked game to the core. That's how a remake is done yo)

Resident Evil 1 HD (That's how remasters should be yo x2 but I wish RE 0 gameplay was added)

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (I love the original more but I'm glad for this remake and remaster. However I'm already against MGS3 remake BS)

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 PS2 version (No more Silent Hill horror fog lol)

Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! (Remake of Pokemon Yellow and honestly finally a decent Pokemon game for me)

SD Snatcher (RPG remake version of the visual novel adventure game Snatcher, you know the game Kojima stole from Bladerunner and added pervert stuff lol. Good thing SD Snatcher is not ruined by Kojimaism lol)

For me it's Dead Space, as the remake does what a good remake should do; keeps the core idea intact enough to be recognizable, and changes up enough stuff to keep it interesting. The remake is a fantastic game, save for some minor gripes here and there story-wise. Its also I think a case of better technology actually making an impact, the atmospheric effects and the whole 'behind-the-scenes randomizer' for the effects and enemy encounters was a chef's kiss.

The remake of Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap is a work of art. It manages to adhere to the original in terms of gameplay while feeling completely fresh. The original was always one of my all-time favourites and honestly the way that remake turned out was some kind of a miracle.

Definitely the definitive version of this classic, I've played both the PS1 version and the PSP remake, and the remake is much better in so many ways, it has a superior translation, adds a lot of new content, expands on the already excellent story and also refines the game's mechanics.

For me it’s probably Paper Mario RPG The Thousand Year Door

My mom randomly got me this game and i love it, also the only way I can play this game because of f—-k a— scalpers ruining every single hobby ever

oh i forgot the Dragon quest 3 HD 2D remake! it's SO GOOD!
i've played just about every version of dragon quest 3, NES, SNES, GBC, Android, this version TOPS ALL OF THEM, better visuals, better story WITH VOICE ACTING (english and japanese) new story scenes, new monster wrangler which helps with teh new side quest to recruit friendly monsters all over the game. lots of map and waypoints and info to avoid getting lost (you can shut all this off too or ignore the waypoint and explore wherever you feel like) giving the characters you create more style and color choices and voice choices (though main character is stuck with 2 styles and no hair color choice, mods exist for this)
i dunno how else to sell it really, it's a good remake even for someone like me who played every other version, yes it's lacking the boardgame minigame and monster coins from GBC, but thats a fine tradeoff for this amazing remake. the modding on PC is very fun too if anything seems to be lacking.

star ocean 2nd story R
let me start this with I HATE MOST OF THE STAR OCEAN GAMES, why? stupid amount of missables, difficulty spikes and nonsense achievements even on PS2 (star ocean last hope 100% achievements is IMPOSSIBLE without 2000 hours of gameplay, that's NOT an exaggeration look it up!)
but... here's star ocean second story R, they just about fixed every problem i had with the older games, missable stuff is MARKED ON THE MAP CLEARLY, you can FAST TRAVEL EASILY, and the combat feels so much more FUN and less bullcrap! so many changees on this remake, it's a full remake in my eyes much new mechanics and changes to combat, skills, levelling up etc. an ACTUAL NEW GAME PLUS WHICH NO OTHER STAR OCEAN ACTUALLY HAS. and god i can't even begin to explain how much easier it is to 100% the 99 different endings (to be fair they're like sub-endings, you see like 6-7 each playthrough)

all the kingdom hearts remasters were pretty good, least fully complete versions of those games (unlike the FF pixel remasters that are just... nothing lol)
note i've never played on PS2 (didn't OWN a PS2) so that HD collection was my first step to playing those, my first KH game ever was GBA Chain of memories (thats a HORRIBLE way to start kingdom hearts btw)
wish they remade recoded and 358/2 days though.

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, a very good REMAKE of the ps2 game, they changed EVERYTHING about it, the original ps2 version you can make yourself dizzy attacking too much (no stamina = dizzy), that was frustrating to say the least, remake removes this just makes it so you can't use skills or dodge for a moment, and the maps were small and round (you have to look it up to understand) the remake has like Metroid-vania map layouts. theres a lot more changes its been a while since i've played it.
while the remake has both the new and old versions included, you'll never play the original once you touch the new remake trust me on that one. it's very nice and vanillaware never fails on the visuals (dragons crown, 13 sentinels, unicorn overlord)

Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP.jpg

I rather enjoyed Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP. As someone who played the original I really loved vising the zombie infested town of San Romero again.

I love Pac-Man World RePac! Took everything good and great about Pac-Man World and made it even better, while also fixing the problems (I hate Anubis Rex ever since my childhood).
And I'm praying that we eventually get a remake of Pac-Man World 2 as well... And I secretly want this remake to be called Pac-Man World 2Pac :V

Favorite remake: Resident Evil 4
Favorite Remaster: Fatal Frame 4 and 5

I'm going to send a missile at your house for mentioning that awful demake
I know it’s a kinda controversial opinion, but I think it’s perfectly fine. The enemy designs are mostly worse and the music is awful, but the atmosphere and gamefeel is top notch. Sound design is one of the best in any game I’ve ever played.

As a full package it’s definitely weaker than the original though.

RAIDOU Remastered : although i would be prefer if there wasn't some story changes, overall this a way more better version of the first Raidou game

Resident Evil 1 Remake : this is the best remake they gave us from RE games, the atmosphere, the art, the difficulty, they nailed it.

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver Remastered: this is one of best remasters i ever saw. the new visuals doesn't change the original art style which i really like and the modern control is also really good.

Silent Hill 2 Remake: honestly when this remake was announced, i was so worried about it due to Bloober Studio past and lack of Team Silent, but i was really happy with the final result.
