Anime What are you watching?

I started watching Dandadan a couple of days ago... I love it, it's a lot of fun.

Lately I have been rewatching some series to practice some Japanese listening/reading, with both audio and subtitles in Japanese:
  • I just finished rewatching Chobits and Cross Game. I've lost count how many times I've watched Cross Game already.
  • I am around Episode 6 of the original Ranma 1/2, they really put a lot of effort into detailed animation in that first season.
  • Around Episode 13 in Macross Frontier.
  • I plan to watch Kobato next.
  • I plan to watch again the pre-Z Dragon Ball, Maison Ikkoku, Touch and Saint Seiya... that is if I can find them with Japanese subtitles.

I've started Zatch Bell 1 month ago: I saw it for the first time when I was 8 years old on Cartoon Network, and I remember that I never saw the ending. I also had PS2 video games.
Over the years I couldn't find it in Italian on the web, luckily 2 months ago I managed to find it and watch it - and in the meantime, also reading the manga.
Great story, memorable characters... but literally destroyed by censorship, cuts and repeated animations. I really hope they can make a remake one day.

Ranma 1/2 2024 Netflix version. Not feeling it. Not the same without the incredible music from the original.
I feel the exact same way about the recent Urusei Yatsura reboot. I don't think any of these old Rumiko Takahashi IPs really fit into a 21st century media landscape. It also doesn't help that both of the new shows look like absolute pastel BS.

the classics of the origins of japanese animation
Classics are weird, the space ones specifically. I personally couldn't get behind anything a bit too mech-heavy (like the ones mentioned above) but on the flip-side I'd be ready to defend OG Macross. The thing is, this space genre comes in sooo many flavours & not everything has aged like wine. & that's putting different tastes aside!
Like, you can't really judge the genre as a whole, you almost have to enjoy everything on a show-to-show basic. I can enjoy The Irresponsible Captain Tylor but not enjoy Nadesico. Stuff like that. But that's basically just me describing every classic in a nutshell.

Special shoutouts to Votoms, because you've never seen a Vietnam-like war done in mechs.

Ah, err, I'll geek out a bit. In short, I actually really like this guy's character designs. Infinite Ryvius has blessed me in many ways.

I notice that you all are mostly talking about recent series. Well, I take the liberty, if I may, to talk about the classics of the origins of japanese animation, which I have recently been rewatching with my son. I'm making him admire all the works of the master Go Nagai, which he seems to appreciate very much, alternating with other original series. So far we have seen:

1) By the master Go Nagai: Getter Robo and Getter Robot G, Devilman, Gaiking, Mazinkaiser and we are halfway through Kotetsu Jeeg series;

2) We have seen by other famous authors: Z Gundam (Tomino), Maison Ikkoku (R.Takahashi), Saint Seiya (Kurumada), Galaxy Express 999 (Matsumoto).
A hug. Yours truly. 🤗
Have you seen those crusty live action shows that Go Nagai presented/produced, I believe it was during the 80s?

Oh, Infinite Ryvius... I liked that one for some reason. The hip-hop like soundtrack was interesting.
I think I still have it on DVDs somewhere, I wonder if I can find some Japanese subs for this one.

I hate to admit it but I'm a closet fan of CLAMP stuff. For some reason everything just clicks with me. Chobits in particular is great because it's grounded with tasteful fanservice. But my inner nerd was mostly impressed with Sugita's performance despite being like, one his first major roles.
The instrumental version of ED 2 gives off sweet vibes too.
