a while ago, i brought my switch to a gathering. we played the scott pilgrim beat em up game and everyone loved it.

what are some other beat em ups you'd recommend to play at a party? whether it's on switch or other consoles

Only 2 players max for this 1 but me and my friends would take turns playing this always had a blast 🙂

I am eager to say Secret of Mana, because I always say Secret of Mana in all co-op conversations, but this time I can't xD.

But I think I could say Dragon's Crown, as it is a beat'em up with RPG mechanics, isn't it?

Actually I love ANY game co-op with friends, and there are tons of them from the 16 & 32 bit era. Ahhh, it was wonderful to have lived that :D

Could you please share some of your personal recommendations?
I’m building my own collection of these and got some cool suggestions here on RGT. Maybe there would be something new.

On topic: Battletoads & Double Dragon The Ultimate Team for NES is da best of the best of the best, just it.

Fight'N Rage! The best modern beat 'em up I've played, even above the also amazing Streets of Rage 4 - highly recommend both!
I'll also second Dragon's Crown - I really hope we eventually get some kind of PC port for that stupidly gorgeous game.

As for classics, I'm a big fan of Capcom's DnD duology, Tower of Doom and Shadow over Mystara, as well as Alien vs. Predator. Can't go wrong with any of these.

The games I played most when I was a teenager were:
  • Turtles IV - Turtles in Time (Snes)
  • Gunstar Heroes (Megadrive) - Although is not a beat'em up per se, it is highly recommended.
  • Streets of Rage (Megadrive)
  • Captain Commando (PS1)
  • Knights of the Round (Snes)
  • Double Dragon (Nes)
  • Golden Axe (Megadrive)
  • Turtles II (Nes)
  • Panzer Bandit (PS1)
  • Pu Li Ru La (Saturn) - This one is hilarous.
  • Die Hard Arcade (Saturn) - One of the very few 3D beat'em ups that I really like.
  • Nekketsu Oyako (Saturn)
These are the games and the versions I played with friends during my childhood, those might have been released for other platforms and of course, most of them should exist in arcade.

I hope I could be of help :)

I played through Final Fight 3 with my little brother one day on a whim when he was like 11 (I’m 9 years older and this was probably close to a decade ago now) and it was a really fun bonding experience.

phantom breaker battlegrounds Ultimate, it's freaking wild, crazyiest beat em up i've ever played
4 players, and 8 online, so many characters as shown below, that's basically all enemies and bosses

River city girls 2, it's 4 players, i believe 8 characters, it's good fun
(not shown, double dragons billy and jimmy as DLC)
1755858582769.jpeg

Ninja turtles games: shredders revenge is 6 players (i think local, online is def 6)
1755858750550.jpeg

on switch, kirby star allies is 4 players and has a lot of playable characters, it's fun with 4 players definitely, it's beat em up enough in my opinion lol
check out kirby return to dreamland Deluxe, also 4 players but not quite a selection as this
1755859008335.png

other games that should be very fun in 4 players:
Rayman legends (ridiculous amount of levels it'll take a long time to 100%)
castle crashers
Guacamelee (i believe both have 4 player co-op on switch) this is beat-em-up metroidvania at it's best.
streets of rage 4, keep in mind theres a lot of unlockable characters (and i think one dlc)

These ones can all be found on Steam and/or GOG
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge (also nab the Cowabunga Collection!), Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind, GI Joe: Wrath of Cobra, The Ninja Warriors Return, Double Dragon IV, Double Dragon Gaiden Rise of The Dragons, River City Girls series, Streets of Rage 4, and there's some upcoming ones like He-Man: Dragonpearl of Destruction, Marvel: Cosmic Invasion, Toxic Avenger is getting a new game, that new Shinobi Art of Vengeance game is mixing Shinobi with Metroidvania level exploration and Streets of Rage's combat. There's Metamorphic Force which is a Konami arcade beat em up in the vein of Altered Beast but BETTER, Ninja Baseball Batman, Double Dragon trilogy, honestly anything by SNK, Lizardcube, Dotemu, Sega, Konami, Capcom, ect. are a safe bet.

Best choices IMO

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV on the SNES, the Japanese version of The Simpsons arcade game, and the Japanese version of Metamorphic Force for the best versions of three of Konami's best beat 'em ups.

Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks - Some parts are designed for co-op if I remember correctly

A Dynasty Warriors game like DW 3, DW 5, or DW 8 or really any good warriors/musou title like Fire Emblem Warriors, Hyrule Warriors, or Dragon Quest Heroes II

Gauntlet Dark Legacy - Gauntlet games are awesome

Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance

Streets of Red Devil's Dare Deluxe

River City Saga Three Kingdoms

The Dishwasher Vampire Smiles - If you want something fast paced like a character action game in 2D

Streets of Rage 2

Battletoads in Battlemaniacs - Of all the Battletoads games, this one is probably the most reasonable in terms of difficulty (it'll still kick your ass though)

Castle Crashers

The Lord of the Rings Return of the King on PS2

Avengers United Battle Force - You have to play at least one good OpenBOR game and this is the best one I've tried

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Rescue Palooza is another great OpenBOR game

Guacamelee Super Turbo Championshio Edition

The Ninja Saviors

Warrior Blade: Rastan Saga Episode III

I don't know if any of the modern Ninja Gaiden games are co-op, but I bet that would be a blast

Double Dragon Neon - Just because the game is hilarious

DnD beat em ups were on PSN and XBOX 360 a while back. They were digital only. Fantasy Anime has the arcade originals. Then there's the SNES ones by Capcom: Magic Sword, Knights of The Round, and King of Dragons, all of which i think are in those Capcom Arcade Stadium collections. I think the 2nd volume has all 3?

A tragically hidden gem and my personal favorite:

Made by Ancient, Yuzo Koshiro's company. It's half beat-em-up, half moving tower defense. Awesome with friends. The previous game is also great but that's locked to 3DS and each person needs their own system for multiplayer.

Ta-da!
Trials of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 3 on SNES) is also co-op and I have played 3 players hack. It is awesome.

You will be surprised… Legend of Mana apparently also has co-op! My guide is below.

Enjoy.

yeah it's one of the only games on SNES for 3 players.
If we’d talk specifically about ARPG, which is sorta closest to beat’emups, there’s also Lord of the Rings game on SNES with support up to 5 players. Weird game, but we enjoyed it.
