What are some unintentionally unlikeable game characters?

I suppose I should pick a different example and say DmC Devil May Cry's take on Dante

He was meant to be a cooler, more hip version of "Gay Cowboy" Dante, but he lost a lot of the charm in the process.

I think it makes more sense if you consider them Aigis successors, not Koromaru.

I think we’ve talked about this before, but I hate what I’ve seen of her in Rebirth, though I always liked how much of a mean fucker she was in the original.
Aigis was an actual character though (the best character in Persona 3 besides Akihiko in fact) instead of an annoying little creature who's there just to annoy the player/bitch and moan. They aren't even on the same league.

Yeah, there wasn't much to dislike in the original since she had only a couple of lines, but being a female ninja automatically entitles her to a strong fandom. So Square Enix heavily leaned into her fandom and turned her into a bigger presence in the remake to disastrous results. They really did her dirty.

For example, I've never related more to Cloud than in this video:

Ava from Borderlands, they tried to do the "I made bad decisions, choices but now I am a better person" type of character but she does some many bad choices like being responsible for a character death, that at the end nobody liked her.

I agree, but that’s also why they feel even worse to me. They’re much more thematically similar to her in the context of the story than to the dog.
My favorite next to Aigis is Junpei though but Akihiko is good too. I think they’re all good except for Mitsuru who feels more robotic than Aigis lol

Heh, that YRP reference gave me a chuckle.
Holy fuck she’s obnoxious, though.

Fair enough. They do all have the desire to be human and are the oddball character of the party. I just don't want to put those 2 in the same category as Aigis out of pure shame tbqh.

The entire cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy game except maybe the tree guy because he barely spoke.

Jonathan from Portrait of Ruin, I remember really sucking every time he was in an exchange with someone.

  • Yuffie from Final Fantasy VII. Yes, she can eventually become likeable, but she starts off on the wrong foot by stealing your stuff and trapping you in a side quest. That's a huge misstep in gaining the player's trust.
  • Milena from Mortal Kombat. Look, I know some people are probably into that (I really don't get it), but her buzzsaw face makes her constant sexualization horrifying, not exciting.
  • Any character with a Whedon attitude. Your friends are there to help you; don't crack insulting quips in an immature attempt to look cool at the risk of making them hate your guts. And no, the guy with the funny name doesn't need to be made fun of, especially by the guy with an even weirder name.
  • The people of Skyrim. Ugly, violent, and prone to screw up my playthrough by killing people I need alive. I don't know why I should be motivated to save their world.
  • Everything/everyone from newer Resident Evil games. Congrats, developers, you went over the line and irked me to such a degree I don't want to play your game.
  • Rufus from Street Fighter IV. Ugly character design, jiggle physics that nobody asked for.

I'm still salty that we got Rufus instead of King Cobra

Because he is not the god of fighter.

This one is a loose example as it's more wasted potential than anything, but Necalli

Legit cool as hell design and concept, jobs a few times and disappears forever. Such a waste. Could've been an enjoyable counterpart to someone like Akuma.

I feel like this is the case for just about every single "big" Street Fighter villain, apart from Bison (I can't really count Akuma as a true villain). They're always too overblown and not interesting enough at the same time, and usually ugly, so aside from any story they just sort of fall into the background to me.

I don't care much about BC Sherlock Holmes but I see a lot of hate directed at him and his writing (I do agree that characters like Patrick Jane or Adrian Monk display intelligence far more well )

He’s kinda dull? But I do get where they were going with his character, in the hands of another writer, I could see the whole ‘tragic genius’ angle done far more well.
BBC Sherlock sucked. It kind of worked for about 1 or 2 episodes, to some degree. The novelty of updating the characters for modern times was interesting. But it starts going downhill when they bring in the "high functioning psychopath" drivel. Sorry, but that isn't how ASPD works; at most, that's how autistic people work if you allow for it to be a bit fantastical. Holmes was always much more similar to an autistic person anyways, and never showed ASPD symptoms — and neither did this version outside of occasionally being an unlikable a**hole. The HFP nonsense sounded like something a coke-headed higher-up forced on the writer to fulfill his fantasies of being the hero he'll never be.

But it gets worse. Andrew Scott's Moriarty is basically Scrappy-Doo in live action. His way of talking and behaving are cartoonishly over the top, and not in a funny way. I quit the series after he appeared, as the episodes are too long to justify waiting until it gets good.

DmC Dante was so bad he sometimes managed to be unintentionally funny. I still laugh at the "f*** you" battle scene, not because it's good comedy, but because it's some of the best evidence that the writers had no idea what they were doing.

Not characters that are meant to be hated, despised, or disagreed with, but dislikeable character's that we're meant to be enjoyed. Proper Scrappy-Doo's and Poochie's. I'll start with some low hanging fruit

Edit: I misremebered the quote from the dev, Alex was always meant to be unlikable. I'm still going to let it stand for conversations sake.
On my way to grabbing this image, I saw a Reddit post ALSO calling her terrible, which is real as fuck

This game wants you so bad to like the most pessimistic and contrarian SMT character ever
The game makes her seem like the cool one but someone with a functioning brain realises she is literally just the nerd emoji with just a little more devil's advocacy

"We should do this"
"Erm, ACTUALLY"

Said it once, I'll say it again, if Sam from Danny Phantom were a video game character, this is who she'd be

Do the Japanese think these type of characters are endearing or something?View attachment 28589
Short answer yes. A lot of tropes can be answered by "well the demographic found it funny!" That's why all those perv characters still exist

I think Gill's pretty cool.

I bounced off of Violetta a bit, which is a shame since I dig her design.

I just wish they would have reigned in the comic relief stuff and let her have a few more moments. Her taking the mantle at the end didn't feel fully earned.
