For example: I REALLY need overworld enemies on turn-based RPGs. I just can't stand the thought of being dragged into random battles I can't even see coming.

I also kinda wanna feel like triggering them was my fault for not dodging the enemies well enough instead of, you know, walking into the wrong pixel. They feel like fair punishment that way.

What about you?

In terms of RPGs, I agree with you there. Random encounters are hard to go back to unless I have some form of speed up option, either through emulation or a QOL update in a remaster.

I don't know about must haves otherwise...

I like how some newer turn based games let you control or turn off random encounters at your discretion. Bravely Default comes to mind. That's the best way to go about it these days.

The only thing I ask in games is the ability to turn off HUD elements individually.
If your game has that I consider it a good game.

Other feature I look into:
Analogue sensitivity, deadzone and acceleration curves.
Audio options/presets for headphones

A pet peeve of mine:
I tend to have a preference for root motion or weighty movement, if games look realistic but have goofy floaty movement it throws me off. (Recent example being Expedition 33)

That's actually the ONE saving grace Lunar: Dragon Song had. It was actually groundbreaking for the Nintendo DS at the time of release, and came in handy more than a little bit.

Man, one thing that kills me about older console FPS games is the terrible control settings. I can't stand inverted aiming even though that's what I grew up with and some of those games don't even give you the option to change it. They will give you four to eight TERRIBLE preset schemes less intuitive than the last lol

Auto combat in turn based RPGs is a must, specifically the Japanese ones. Would be nice if all of them had what Earthbound does when you are higher level than the enemies.
Emulation has really shown how pointless and mindless most combat in some of those games is. You find yourself just frame skipping and mashing the confirm button over the regular attack option. The best ones make things better by making enemies hit hard, making this type of monotony slightly more interesting with some resource management and making sure you have a certain amount of healing items for a long crawl.

Auto defeating enemies when you are a high enough level is pretty good. I love doing that in DBZ Kakarot where you just fly through them

Mandatory instant fast travel for massive open world games. I love exploring and roaming as much as the next guy, but I don’t have as much time as I did when I was a kid, so I love having the option to speed things up a bit.
The ability to save and quit at any point in time.
That's pretty much the only "true" must-have I can think of for myself - not that that's a rarity these days, but still.
Fuck, I forgot about this. Being able to save anywhere is a must in my book, too.

See now i'm the opposite, i like when you can't see what's coming. >:D It's like the enemy monsters are like "YAH HA! GOT YA!"

I think Shin Megami Tensei/Persona has a good take on auto-battling. Auto-battling repeats your last turn exactly, but enemies will have elemental attacks that they completely nullify or reflect back at you. So being mindless can backfire easily enough, when you don't care about those enemy resistances.

Yes! I think that happened in EarthBound, too, if my memory serves me right.
Edit: @moonbits said it before and I didn't read it. My bad.

I might be one of, if not the only, Zubat apologist in Pokemon games. They are notorious for random encounter spam! I still love 'em all the same though hehe

Regardless of the genre, I like a mini-map in a corner, enough well done to be able to immediately understand where you are even if the place has various heights, and same for a full map, of course the exits' names must be written down (this is for games where you explore, but I like the minimap also in games like "Need For Speed", lol); no random encounters but enemies you can see; an easy-to-use menu especially if you must spend lot of time in it for equipping and changing skills; auto save OR save points not too far away one from another, and of course a save point right before a boss battle, or even better saving whenever you want; choice for the difficulty, and you are able to change it whenever you want if you realize it's too easy/too difficult; customizing control settings especially for the camera.

I love that save points in Yakuza are phone booths around the map in older games, and that you could save anywhere after they started giving protagonists mobile phones.

Oh yeah. I LOVE those. SMTIV is an all time favorite.
