Hello!~
I've been doing some research on popular horror manga, so far I've found out a lot of people admire Junji Ito's works (Including myself). I am curious to know if there are other creators similar to what he does or maybe something close or even more bizarre and creepy. I would love to explore that side of the manga world with you!

I've watched Mieruko-Chan and while the anime is...good? The manga is so good!
Tomoki Izumi made a masterpiece, it's pretty fun to read and watch (especially the art style), it's pretty funny...and sad seeing her struggling with her powers. I recommend the manga over the anime because well? It has some ecchi scenes.

Nothing wrong with that and the animation of the anime is pretty good too, but I prefer the manga for now. And then there's Parasyte: The Maxim, one that introduced me to both horror anime and manga...it's amazing. The anime alone is peak, just go watch it if you haven't because I highly recommend it

If you want even more bizarre and creepy, I'll point to Shintaro Kago. It's a lot of weird body horror stuff that is fairly gross, but it's like "what if Junji Ito was more into nudity and gore." It's definitely not for everyone.

My favorite manga of all time, "Dorohedoro" verges on horror pretty often, it has a pretty dark and grimy aesthetic overall. Yet it still manages to have lots of energy and fun moments.

I actually really enjoyed Mieruko-Chan! It was a cute/creepy anime. Do you know if they're making more of the anime? I know the manga goes further. I haven't had the chance to read it yet. I've been collecting Parasyte. It's definitely entertaining.

No way! I was actually thinking about starting the manga the other day, but wasn't sure. Now I'll definitely be checking it out!

I heard no news about it, some did said that it was just a promotion stuff which is kind of sad to think about. Who knows though, maybe they are working on season 2 (that's what I hope too at least)

Does pure psychological horror counts? While I enjoy Junji Ito works(I'm still going through his work) and the body horror, currently reading Parasite manga and enjoying it, none of them make me feel what the psychological genre does, like literally chills.
If it doesn't count just ignore me; this is my favorite manga in the genre.
Chi no wadachi / A Trail of Blood by Oshimi Shuzo.
Screenshot from 2025-01-03 15-03-25.png

Its about how a mother ruins the life of her son by psychological abuse, how the emptiness of a soul can affect so much to you and your surroundings, how childhood is the most crucial point in life that parents should take it to the utmost seriousness, and at lot more. Truly a roller coaster of emotions where the horror of someone so dear to you can become your nightmare is predominant.

This author has, mostly, this kind of stories, where miserable and toxic relationships play a major part of the plot. And for that your need naive people(prepare to be mad at characters) and the wolf disguised as sheep. And that's for me the true horror, malice covered in kindness and when you discover it its too late.

I wonder how differently I would've felt if I came to Chi no Wadachi after it had finished, so I could binge it. Every time a new chapter would release I'd have a sense of dread about it, but needed to know how the story shook out and couldn't look away.

There's one I've seen recently that is called 'A Mother's Love, a Daughter's Prison' that's about a girl who definitely killed her mom, but the story is looking back to see how we got to this point. I don't think it's as creepy as Chi no Wadachi, though.

I understand you. I had the same feelings, and for that I left it for about two years then after learned that it was finished I re-read it from start again. The ending was, for me, absolutely satisfactory.

Thank you for mentioning that manga, I've found it, the description says it is based on a real story, I will definitely read it.

I do love a good Junji Ito manga, but outside of him, one of my favorite horror-ish manga series is Gegege no Kitaro by Shigeru Mizuki. I especially recommend it if you're into supernatural horror or yokai.

But outside of that, I remember enjoying two medical-adjacent horror manga called Manhole and Emerging. I read them both at a time where I was desperately craving stories similar to the video game series Trauma Center, which generally follows doctors combating the outbreak of a deadly virus. Between the two, Emerging was more what I was looking for at the time but both of them are interesting in their own regards.

I don't read manga much, if at all, but one I still remember to this day is The Drifting Classroom. Found it randomly thinking it's one of Junji Ito's cause the design looks similar to his work, turns out this manga came out when he was 10 years old hahaha.

I've read very little horror mangas aside from Junji Ito's one-shots and Uzumaki, but I found Hideout by Masasumi Kamkizaki to be quite good

Man, I forgot about chi no wadachi, that one is so good, I suffered a lot lol

Usumaru Furuya is one of my favorite manga authors, though his stuff is more surrealist/psychological than straight-up horror.

As a kid I used to read Shintaro Kago, which is very much on the gore/body horror side of things.

The horror genre is one of my favourites, and manga has a great deal of authors: Kazuo Umezz, Hideshi Hino, Junji Ito, Kanako Inuko and so on. Some of my favourites who come to mind:

The House of Insects (Kazuo Umezz)
portada_casa_insectos_kazuo_umezz_peq.jpg

An horror anthology of short stories about broken couples, with a great deal of macabre imagery. The first one is about a husband giving insects to his wife (who thinks that it's a giant insect), pretty disturbing.
Orochi
orochi-volume_2.jpeg

One of Umezu's best works, Orochi is the story of a girl who happens to be a goddess, interfering with human affairs with absolute ignorance about the consequences of his actions. Many conflicts of the japanese society are reflected in this manga, it's very relevant to this day.
Circus of Monsters (Hideshi Hino)

My first contact with Hideshi Hino, a manga about a circus full of monsters and his stories, it's captivating.
Mimi No Kaidan (Mimi and her Ghost Stories)
s-l1200 (2).jpg

An underrated classic by Junji Ito, adapting an horror novel about a girl and his encounters with the supernatural. Yami No Koe it's another two-volume horror anthology, who is well worth the read.

Mermaid Saga by Rumiko Takahashi is a good one. It's not as out there as Junji Ito but definitely dark compared to her well known stuff(Inuyasha, Ranma, etc)

Devilman by Go Nagai, it's perhaps dated given it's age and feels a bit rushed but it's still great imo.

I wholeheartedly recommend anything written by Junji Ito, Uzumaki and Tomie are really good and he has a lot of compilation works that are chock-full of amazing short stories (I think two of my favorite Junji Ito books would be Cat Diaries and Smashed.

I saw someone else on this forum recommend Trail of Blood which I second, it’s a different kind of terrifying.

Creature! and Gantz are also pretty neat, though I haven’t finished them.

Happy to see Hideshi Hino appreciation, here's another one I love from him

Seeds of Anxiety has some cool ghostly depictions and "jumpscares"

Also Suehiro Maruo is one of my all-time favs, although one could say eroguro isn't exactly horror

I gotta continue reading this one, it was pretty fun, although there was a big tonal shift a bit into the story

Seems of Anxiety is a true gem! I love the last chapter of the manga, it's really unsettling. I have a couple of friends who are big fans of Suehiro Maruo, i only have Panorama in physical form, but it's a delight. Imomushi (also based in another short story of Edogawa Ranpo) is another favourite of mine (i make a collage inspired by that manga a couple of years ago).
