What are some inaccuracies in emulation that annoy you?

I'm mostly talking about well-implemented emulators, not incomplete ones.
For me, i found two inaccuracy in all MegaDrive emulators which always annoyed me:
1- The Adventure of Batman and Robin: I have had this game for the real console, and the first boss's entrance and firing were almost in-sync with music! but in all emulators, the timing is off from the very start!
2- Taz Mania: None of emulators could emulate the music correctly! there's always some unwanted *domb* in some levels, which wasn't present in real console!

None of these cause a loss in the game, but they cause a loss of hair! 🤣
What are you experiences?

Well i think the colours are off with some games you play and for some emulators its just not the same output as on oldskool crt tv but i cant complain its the only way gamers can preserve and play all the awsome gems you normally wouldnt or couldnt play and you can always buy the real thing if you really want it in its original state but thats just my opinion peace game on....

Oh, boy... almost too many to list XD

But I recall being particularly annoyed at Every. Single. N64. Emulator for breaking down with Pokemon Snap.

It's something I have never seen before... but the buttons just stop working on that one, no matter the software I try the game on. I maaaaaybe get to look around, but taking pictures is completely out of the questions. Todd Snap? More like Waffles Snapped XD

As for *actual* inaccuracies, Dreamcast emulators seem to hate Jet Grind Radio. Sometimes I go through walls and stuff.

I can see one of the examples! 😂
That's quite annoying for me too! it seems there's some palettes to remedy it... but, oh well...

Indeed! I'm most grateful for emulation! 😁

Really? Actually i have played this game with Project64 in past and everything was totally fine! 😮
I don't remember playing it to end or not, but i'm pretty sure i had unlocked most of stages!
Anyway that was interesting!

That blurry effect when playing in snes9x thank to the operative systems (from windows vista onwards). truly annoying.
and trying to keep playing in kega fusion emulator. my fingers go numb after a few sessions.

Those blurry effects are really annoying... but in snes9x?
actually i tested it in xp, win7 and win11 and there was no blurry effect!
There's an option in Video Options about Bilinear Filtering, but if disabling it doesn't solve the problem for you, it's probably graphic-card specific...
I remember at least one graphic card which had a forced bilinear filter in all apps and it was very annoying!
Sometimes graphic cards have a settings page with options for this, and sometimes changing driver might help... idk.

I agree with you and thank you for the information.
this sheds some light on some details I was unaware of.
after all, my priority when gaming is performance, but what you've written is just as important to take into account.

Upscaled graphics in N64 emulators.

I don't care if it looks "better" than the hardware, I want to see N64 games in all of their low-res glory.

hmm... actually i have removed my older N64 emulators, so i can't test them right now, but as far as my memory serves, there were options for this in all of them...
Currently i only have ParaLLEl core for RetroArch, and it have resolution options... mine is currently set to 640x480, but you can set it to 320x240 which is the native one. 😀

Sounds so small, like a nokia cell phone with java. make me feels nostalgic.
back to 2010, discovering every .jar game, and looking at every possible attempt to replicate minecraft on cell phones (lol).

And actually it seems that they can be emulated in JavaME core of RetroArch too!
But i didn't test it, so no idea about it's accuracy! 😅

I got used to that resolution, back then. it was one of the optimal options.
well, with java cell phones is 240x320. if I find another one, I'm back to business.
you are not losing anything with javame, just make a simple test and you'll see.

Not sure if this fits but I cant seem to make Holy Diver for the NES play correctly on any emulator. I thought i might have just downloaded a bad rom but it happens to every one I find. It makes the game unplayable as many of the sprites move or disappear as you move:

It make me sad because I really want to play this game. Am I missing something?

Sega Saturn emulator in general...even on a pc that plays ps2 games at full speed, saturn is sluggish as....well a slug. 2nd would be for snes. There are 3 games unplayable that only work if you patch them with a fan fix. I'm not picky on music or graphics, but if it is unplayable....*angry face hiding my sad face

My experience with the Yabause core in retroarch for playing Saturn games has been top notch. Have you tried it? I am currently on a laptop with a 4060 in it but I didn't have any issues with my older computers either.

Oh! Actually i have a very old phone which supports JavaME! so many years ago i even managed to create a simple notepad app for it! it was so awesome! such good days... 😊

I tested right now, and only emulator which had problems with this specific game was Nestopia, if you use VirtuaNES or FCEUX it should work fine, FCEUX core of RetroArch too if you like.
maybe version of your emulators are too old? probably mine too! (VirtuaNES 0.97 and FCEUX 2.2.3)
So hope a holy dive into it for you. 😁

I haven't dived into this one yet unfortunately, so i'm silent here. 😶

Talking about issues, my internet right now is playing tricks! so sorry for late answers. ⏳

VirtuaNES works a treat! Thank you very much for the recommendation.

Playing Mario Kart 64 20 odd years ago via the Surreal emu on the original XBox and UltraHLE on PC used to reaally wind me me up. On the very first course, Luigi Raceway, there's a video screen above the tunnel entrance that mimics what is on screen but these emus just showed a black box. Everything else was ok, just a bit of slowdown here and there, but that black screen used to get right on my tits.

1- Resolution although that’s understandable
2- frame rate some guys run great on og hardwaew
3- Lag and sometimes 2d assets look weird in old 3d games but that’s more of a monitor issue

Hoping some friends might find this info useful, i decided to give more explanation at least about NES palette hassles.

When i played Super Mario Bros on my real nes console, it looked roughly like this:
smb-recreated-from-my-memory.PNG

(What i roughly remember)

And when we play it in emulators this is what we get:
smb-nestopia1.PNG

Nestopia (YUV)
smb-nestopia2.PNG

Nestopia (RGB)
smb-virtuanes.png

VirtuaNES
smb-fceux.png

FCEUX

But why?
Actually i don't understand it much either, but as far as i learned, it seems there was multiple color variations among real nes consoles too!
So all of them might be correct! yet, they might not be what you experienced on YOUR real console!

For this very reason, there are palette options in every nes emulator, in there you can customize colors to your taste!
These palettes can be exported/imported as *.pal files and they can be found in internet too.
Also FCEUX has come with some *.pal files by default, which you can test, among them SONY_CXA2025AS_US.pal was closest to what i remember of my own console.
smb-sony-palette.png

(Preview of SONY_CXA2025AS_US.pal)
It can be used in other nes emulators too, so i have uploaded that one for your convenience if you like to test it.

This forever continues to bother me.
It reminds me when sonic 1 emulation audio doesn’t sound like the real thing. Although that’s more of an issue with official rereleases.

Really? Actually i have had Sonic1 on real console, and i didn't sensed any noticeable difference between real one and emulated one!
But one thing is for sure! sound output of TV might be wildly different than pc!
Same can be said about colors too! (especially CRT tv)
Or maybe you are emulating it using later consoles?

I should’ve clarified I meant solely official re-releases (like collections you buy on steam). Unofficial sonic emulation is flawless. Sorry didn’t make that clear.
