For me, it's stuff like:
  • Wasting a critical hit on an enemy that was about to die anyways.
  • In RPG games where a normally killing blow misses and you die next time the enemy attacks you
  • Dying/closing the game after not saving for 2+hours and/or entering a boss battle with little resources.

I'd say one of the most frustrating moments of Bad Luck in a game is whenever you have a camera or visibility issue right at the worst possible moment, such as during a powerful attack or when dealing with an aggressive enemy. It always feels like the game did you dirty.

Those purple spots are FOEs and there are a couple danger corners I call them. Escape is impossible if you get cornered in a certain way. Nothing more unlucky than that. Sea Wanderers are the WORST

Unable to get a rare item to drop in WKC. Had 2 of them, needed 3. Spent the entire day to get one, and one mission took about 30 minutes to complete. The grind was real.

Looting an entire Mule base in Death Stranding while ignoring the suspicious parcel in my truck.

The 2 stories I can think of off the top of my head are:
Playing the Metroid Prime remaster for the first time, for the record I've never been great at metroid, I don't know why but the exploration always feels so obtuse to me, So, I'm slowly but surely making my way through the first main level, I find a save point and go about my way for a solid hour. I got some new gear, explored some new rooms, etc. The game is clearly gearing me up for a boss battle at this point and I'm presented with 2 doors I take one of them and Bam Im starting the boss fight. I'm like oh fuck I thought this was gonna be the save room then the boss fight would start. Of course not, I get pretty close to beating the boss and die. Load up and I'm back where I was an hour earlier, now I need to go get all the equipment again and re-explore rooms. I was fucking pissed. Like why the hell is there not an auto save before the boss, I get it, it's metroid, Auto save isn't really a thing but for fucks sake there is nothing fun about having to redo an hours worth of progress in a game just because I went through the wrong door. I set the game down and haven't gone back since lol.

The first time I played through Mother 1 I didnt realize the rom I had was the version that contained the anti piracy checkpoints. So you get to a certain point in the game, I think it's the last town and you go to meet Teddy, and I get hit with an anti piracy screen that won't let me progress. Well, I'm about 4 or 5 days into playing the game and I'm sure as hell not about to give up. So I skip adding Teddy to my party and continue on with the game thinking I'll be fine. Let it be known that Mother 1 is not exactly an easy game, it is very much of its time in terms of difficulty, grindiness, and fickleness. Here I am scrambling through Mt Itoi just barely scraping by, I make it to the tombstone that initiates the final boss and the Anti Piracy screen pops up and stops me dead in my tracks. Once again I was pissed, I felt so betrayed since I was RIGHT there about to beat the game.
Needless to say I accepted my defeat, downloaded the correct rom, and managed to brute force my way through the game in a day getting all the way to the end again and finally beating Gigue. But I tell you I can remember the feeling of my stomach sinking seeing that screen and realizing I was gonna have to replay the who damn game. It's funny to look back on but man was I angry at the time.

I don't have much bad luck, but I have a shit ton of "gaming dementia" -- moments where I could swear I did everything right and yet I end up dead or falling behind because things that normally work simply don't anymore.

Also... I wasn't on this one, but it became sort of a legendary moment within my community when it happened:

- Getting a bad roll in any type of game with DnD rules really hurts.
- Not finding a rare spawn for hours that has a 1% drop rate or some B.S like that (even worse if playing with a friend who nabs it in less than half an hour)
- Getting 1-shot when you've gotten a boss down to less than 5% HP after a lengthy battle
- Getting killed by lag after a close match against an equally skilled player in PvP.
- Getting softlocked or hardlocked out of progression without realising it when you haven't saved for yonks

I never beat the game Mugen Souls on the PS3 because after losing the final boss, I decided to grind when I went back to the Final Event area to trigger the Final Boss again, the bubble was gone. I saved after grinding so I was fucked.

The bad luck moments that comes in mind:
-Any unlucky crits/misses with RPGs, especially if it's a game like Megaten when it can bite back real hard.
-Anytime when the AI does whatever it wants and it's not the ideal move you wanted to see.
-Any rare enemy/drops in general that's insanely low (thanks Terraria's Rod of Discord and FF IV's pink tail).
My main one will always be the Megaten trades and the demons just taking what I gave them and just leaving afterwards.

- Constantly rolling low numbers in Party Games
- Getting overtaken or getting crashed out right before the finish line
- The game crashing after not saving for a long time
- Getting comboed to death in Mario Kart
-Being the first one to get KO’d first in Smash Bros.
- Getting fucked over by luck based minigames in Mario Party
- Someone unleashing the Boo on you in Mario Party

Leading a daily race in Gran Turismo 7. Just as I'm about to turn into a corner, the screen briefly cuts out...

One that sticks out for me was because of a wrong number phone call at 2 a.m. looking for a guy back in 2006. And also, for my entire life time gaming, my one moment of real gamer rage.

My aunt was asleep in bed, I was playing KOF 2006.
I'm on the last challenge to clear the easy mission mode. :
Beat Alba Mira, who has 200% health, unlimited super, only hits above 1 hit damage Mira.
I thought, "Ok, so 2 hits and above can only damage? FU, I'm choosing Ryo Sakazaki, and combo your ass!"
For 30 minutes, I'm stuck. Refuse to take a break, I keep getting real close to KO Alba, fucker wins. Because of this trail, I hate Alba Mira now, even to this day. I'm getting really pissed. Suddenly, the home phone rings, through out the house. I quickly pause the game, and answer the phone so my aunt wouldn't wake up and nag me. Some teen girl, asking for Micheal. Wrong number I said.
Aunt didn't wake up, unpause game, lose barely. FUCK! FUCK! FUCK!
10 minutes or so pass, get back to the game. I've got him! I got you mother fucker! I GOT YOU!
PHONE RINGS! "NOOOO!" As I had him down to a sliver of life left. Phone has rang 10 times, before I could pause the game; aunt woke up yelling who the hell is calling right now? "Is it that dumb girl friend of yours? Is it one of your stupid friends?!!!"
Answer phone, same stupid teen girl, "I wanna talk to Micheal, NOW! Don't lie, I know he's there!" My anger and blood pressure exploded to then unheard of levels...
"WRONG NUMBER YOU STUPID HOE! DON'T CALL BACK OR I'LL MURDER YOU, AND PULL YOUR SOUL OUT OF YOUR MOUTH AND SHOVE IT UP YOUR ASS, JUST SO I CAN PULL IT YOUR MOUTH AGAIN, YOU BITCH!"
And slammed the phone down. Aunt "Why are you yelling?" NOTHING!!! as I tried to compose myself to unpause the game. Ryo is next to Alba, 2 jabs will do it. Unpause. LOSE. Still angry from wrong number shaking, now.

Rage to 9th power after this loss, I begin to crush the controller. The controller exploded. I don't mean broke in half, pushing from the sides inward is what I mean. Plastic, circuits and shit went flying through my room. I've always had a strong grip from laborer jobs back then, working out and martial arts. This also the first and only time I had gamer rage, though it wasn't entirely the game. Fuck you Alba Mira....

Dying/closing the game after not saving for 2+hours
THIS (though I don't remember in which game has happened). Sometimes I saved every moment, sometime I said "oh, yes, I'll save after reaching that city", and then a random battle crushed me.

Or maybe you can't save for some reason after doing some event involving RNG and if you're unlucky or you meet a powerful enemy you can't avoid you lose that item with 0,1% chances of dropping.

Also, there was that one time I was playing co-op Cuphead with a friend. He wanted to try soloing the first scrolling stage and to his credit, he did. The end stage boss gave him trouble, though, so I popped in as he was about to die and finished it off. While still riding the victory high, I proceeded to jump directly into the pit to the right of the boss arena because I had just remapped my buttons and forgot where the 'dash' button was. He has never let me live that down.
