I used to go to an arcade near my home when I was a teenager until it closed. That place had the magic none of the places I've visited later has.
Nowadays, it's full of noise, people do not value what they have on screen because they are thinking it's a crappy old game and they have better games at home, so they go there just to make noise, gather with friends and make sure they are noticed around.
In my city all the arcades have been closed in favour to a few "arcade bars", which are just a bunch of tables with people drinking beer, 4 silly retro pictures on the walls and maybe one or two arcade cabinet around just to make you feel you're in a retro place, which I find embarassing. Even shopping malls have their "arcade" place, but for us arcades are just 4 crappy UFO catchers with "I don't really want that shit" prize, 2 or 3 racing machines, 2 or 3 gun machines and some other games for children. It's depressing, so I never go those places.
But of course, it depends on the country, in Japan Taito Station is fun, and there are some other arcades around but they are noisy, oh boy they are. I always enter them with earplugs, so I can reduce the noise to something more bearable.
And the root cause was not that we can game at home, the reason arcades are not popular in any place other than Japan is that their prices are outrageous. These are not places for fun, these are places to rip off your money of overusing the magnifficient word "retro". When I was a kid, I could play 4 credits with 0,60€, nowadays they want you to pay 1 credit 1€, almost 8 times more expensive. Go f**k them lol.
