weirdest ports???

the sims games have many strange ports to handheld consoles, im pretty sure they are mostly bad - terrible.
You’d actually be wrong. And I swear to god I’m not just saying because I’m a big fan of the sims GBA and DS games (or glazing the ever loving shih outta the franchise). They actually have a lot of great gameplay and overall story (yes they have plot)

Damn I wish PS2 version of the Urbz was good as much as the GBA version. All PS2 version is about being the king/queen of the city so it's more like ass kissing simulator while GBA version has such elements but also have crazy story in a good way and it is a continuation of Bustin' Out.

Well at least PS2 version of Bustin' Out is a good game like I love to play as a scientist and build my "secret" lab lolol.

Some of the PS1 games that got ported to run on the Nokia N-Gage were pretty funky.

At the time it was pretty impressive to have a whole-ass PS1 game running on a mobile phone, but looking back, these ports felt super weird and janky to play, mostly due to the physical limitations of the platform they were ported to.

hi how is everyone!!!

so i am a big fan of the early Ys games, and I have a soft spot for the first one in particular. i got the pc88 version forever ago on the switch and i liked it so much that i got Ys 2 on there as well. recently i had a birthday and i was given two games as gifts: falcom classics for the sega saturn, and Ys for the famicom. i was super excited obviously because whoa!!! two more versions of Ys, i wonder how they're different? i played the saturn port, and it was very faithful to the original with updated graphics and some quality of life improvements, nothing crazy. famicom Ys is quite possibly the most jarring port of a familiar game i have ever played. the world map is changed entirely, and it took me forever to make my way around the first town area because it was made so much bigger and rearranged???
and now i'm curious. what are games that have the weirdest or most jarring ports to other consoles that you all know of??
Ys is notorious for having dramatically differing ports/remakes of the same game. For instance, there are four distinct versions of Ys 4, all of which follow the same major beats of the story, but all doing a completely different interpretation of the game.

Ys 4: Mask of the Sun (SNES)
Ys 4: The Dawn of Ys (TurboGrafx/PC-Engine)
Ys 4: Mask of the Sun: A New Theory (PS2--one of the three Taito published PS2 remakes of the Ys games)
Ys 4: Memories of Celceta (PSVita)

My understanding is that Mask of the Sun and Dawn of Ys were both developed at the same time, by two different devs, who were handed the basic concept art and a general plot idea and cut loose to make it however they saw fit. Those two games differ from each other because of the difference in design styles of the two dev studios.

Mask of the Sun: A New Theory is a remake of the SNES game, but with a 3D engine, while Memories of Celceta is a sort of remake of the SNES and TurboGrafx games, with the intent being to combine elements from both and make a sort of definitive lore to the fourth game. Plus, it adds the party system of Ys 7 to bring it inline with what the Ys series was at that time.

Ys is such a cool series, but I think the most interesting part is just how unique each of its ports and remakes are. You can play several versions of most of the games and they'll each have something completely different from each other, effectively allowing you to play the same game in multiple flavors.

Dead Rising: Chop til you Drop. I didn't have an Xbox and really liked Dead Rising, so that was my only way to play it until the PC port. Honestly? Despite the repetitive mission structure and artificially enclosed spaces I actually really liked it at the time. It's like a weird hybrid with Dead Rising and Resident Evil 4. It also has some exclusive stuff, like some of the psychopaths being zombies instead alongside dogs and parrots.

Sims 2 on GBA was like a lot like Animal Crossing; I ate that stuff up. Plus the PS2 ports of the Sims games were more like social RPG games where leveling up was more about teaching your sim skills so you could complete quests, than fighting monsters and exploring dungeons. Really unique and fun. I reject any poo-pooing of those games, despite my hatred for EA as a whole.

I have heard good things about that Wii version of Dead Rising. You use Resi 4 as a comparison, but I've also heard the Wii version of that is pretty good too.

Never said that either one was bad. DR:CtyD is just weird is all.
I didn't think you meant it was bad. I meant my comment in an agreeing manner. Like, I thought you were saying it was good/interesting and I had heard that a couple of times before as well.

I often wonder if the Gamecom had a functional screen, would the games be any good?
Tiger put a lot of effort into licensing then AAA game.
Sure with it lacking colour it wouldn't dent the Gameboy color's sales.
But its higher than average resolution (200x160) did allow for some crazy things.

Snake Eater on the 3DS. The timing was really poor because MGS2/3 HD's Vita port came out around the same time so you had the choice between two HD games or one remake with downgraded visuals, and people took note. (Plus the Circle Pad Pro bumped the price up.) If I remember correctly the 3DS remake added crouch walking but if anything I think that would hurt the balance.

An Xbox 360 game ported to the Nintendo DS? What the hell were they thinking? Amazingly, despite some expected downgrades it captures much of the spirit and fun of the original.

It kind of makes me sad that this is the ONLY time we ever got a Viva Pinata game on a Nintendo system.
