hey yall! i recently finished the first part of Higurashi When They Cry and loved it. I'm currently in a bit of a fucked up housing situation so i dont have access to my full PC rig, so i'm feeling the urge to dig into more visual novels in the meantime. any recommendations?
currently in my backlog i have danganronpa, 428 shibuya scramble, umineko

If you don't mind Tactics RPG then, Hundred Line TLDA is quite good. From the Danganronpa and Zero Escape people.
ive been really interested in this one, but i feel i should probably get acclimated to their general style before buying a full price 100+ hour game lmfao

nice try, i have this one on the backlog too. you arent getting me that easy!

Now seriously, Ace Attorney is neat if you don't care about romance, being mostly in portable consoles makes them a great way to kill time in trips

Mine are these ones.

Will leave this other thread here too for posterity. These are old though (and the first one is exclusive for PC games) so I'll leave the new one as it is

Danganrona is a classic. 428 Shibuya Scramble is really, really great.

And while I'm here, I recommend Raging Loop. A personal favorite (A kind of werewolf game with an unusual protagonist and a bit of japanese folklore) :giggle:

Ace Attorney Series
The Silver Case/The 25th Ward: The Silver Case (i recommend Flower, Sun and Rain after the first Silver Case)
The House in Fata Morgana
Professor Layton Series (it's more like a puzzle game but it's really good)
Umineko (which you already have)

Just wondering, but by first part do you mean you just finished Ch.1 of Higurashi?

yeah. dont know how theres like 7 others to follow
Just curious since I'm in the middle of Ch.4 right now for Higurashi

For a visual novel recommendation, the last one I finished was Raging Loop. I recommend checking that one out

finished steins; gate not so long ago

you'll have to invest some hours in order to play it and get all the endings (i missed two of them), but the story is great and has a great universe with the other games of the same developer

Muv Luv and it's sequel Muv Luv Alternative. The latter is the highest rated VN on VNDB. It's famous for it's genre shift from romantic comedy to post apocalyptic sci fi. What I like about it is it's very character driven, and the weird premise is used to get big drama and feels in ways you wouldn't anticipate. The writers have setup-and-payoff down to a T (the cost is lots of exposition and a slow pace but since you're a Higurashi fan like me that won't be a problem lol)

a few of my picks, in roughly descending order of how must-play I think they are for VN fans:

  • 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors (probably my favorite, the sequel Virtue's Last Reward is also great but I really didn't enjoy the third game in the series)
  • Hotel Dusk (and its sequel Last Window)
  • all Ace Attorney games (I do think the Switch collection was really well done, as loyal as I was to the DS versions)
  • Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo (if you pick up anything new from this list, please pick Paranormasight... SO underrated with amazing art, music, and characters. Story has horror elements but has a darkly imaginative mix of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Death Note, Phoenix Wright, and Virtue's Last Reward. Desperately want a sequel from these devs.

  • All of the Famicom Detective Games on Switch
  • Policenauts (I liked the Sega Saturn version the most)
  • Gnosia (super underrated, lovely art style and a pretty nuts story albeit a sequel-bait ending)
  • Sakura Wars (awesome Sega Saturn VN, the sequel recently got a fan translation that I'll have to play through soon)
  • Digimon Survive (most of it is a VN, has some tactics-JRPG gameplay too though)
  • Time Travelers (recent fan translation is SWEET)
