I noticed that aside from Yousef's article about REVO, there was no real dedicated VF thread and wanted to correct that.

Have you played any of the games in the series?
Which is your fave?
Who are your mains?
If you don't play/like VF, why? (Is it too good for you?)
What do you think about REVO so far? Any VF6 predictions/wishes?
Discuss.

I started with Evo on the PS2 in high school and literally started judo because of Goh lol. I just really liked how technical and deliberate the game felt compared to "button mashy" games, even games like Tekken which I also grew up with and also still love. The character design also seemed really "pure" somehow, like the original Tekken games. Just good, simple character design.

Honestly I like playing as most VF characters, but my top faves are Goh, Aoi, Akira, and Jacky. I bought the mini Hori USB arcade fighter controller recently, but then went back to using my PS5 controller because the PS button layout is too attached to my adolescent muscle memory lol. I basically sit the dualshock controller on my lap and use it like a (very small) arcade controller.

I don't have many educated opinions on REVO since I am a fighter rube who barely even knows what rollback netcode is, but I will say that making all the costume options from past games like Evo and Final Showdown into paid DLC is not cool :( It used to be a cool way to show off how experienced you were and how much you'd played...Now it appears to be just part of a Ryu ga gotoku cash grab on Sega's part.

I became obsessed with Virtua Fighter 2 as a kid when I first saw a preview of it in a GameFan Magazine. Got to play it at Toys R Us, and was blown away. But never owned it as I didn't have a Saturn. However, my mom bought me Virtua Fighter 2 on the Genesis, and Virtua Fighter Animation on Game Gear. While they weren't the real powerhouse, they were still pretty good games. I enjoyed the Game Gear one the most, and even watched the Anime back around 96 or 97 for it.

Oh shit I forgot about the GG version lol. That's really interesting that those are the ones you mainly played...I actually haven't played them but should check them out. I also need to look up the anime on YouTube. I would kill for a post-Evo anime...

Edit: Holy shit it's dubbed, how did I never watch this before

I played VF2 in passing but didn't really get into the series until VF5 introduced my main El Blaze. I've always admired the visual presentation and sound design of VF though. I wish more fighting games took cues from it. No supers, no meters, no comeback mechanics of any sort. I love Guilty Gear but sometimes you just want to punch someone in the face without worrying about juggling your meters. And I love the cheesy voice acting. So glad they didn't replace that in Revo.

I bought REVO when it came out but never played it. 😅 However I did play a lot of Ultimate Showdown (the PS4 version). Also helped that it was part of ps plus for a while, kept the player numbers up. Haven't tried any of the other VFs but I plan to at some point. As for 6 I'm at the wait and see stage, modern fighting games have been doing some wacky stuff as of late.

Yes, this!! I think that's also why I always liked VF: clean design, no wild stuff going on...And of course that English voice acting for the non-Japanese characters lol. Very "This is what Americans and Europeans sound like, right?"... I wish they'd given Lion a French accent tho lol

I've played a bit of 2 and 5, but never got super hardcore into VF. I played Sarah and Aoi for the bit that I did play. I'm looking forward to 6 and plan on hopping on more seriously if it's good.

yeah the first one i played was VF4 on PS2. Then I played the PSN version of VF2 on PS3 and VF5 with a disc I got in a GameStop for 2 bucks. I loved the online vs. matches. I loved the map and all the nods to Sega arcades in Japan. The aesthetic was awesome! I got realllllly good with Shun Di and used to piss off anyone who challenged me. XD Then when i finally got a Saturn i got a copy of VF2 and Fighters Megamix. :D I still have it in the longbox.

It preserves that campiness we had in japanese games from the 90's. Like the voice acting was objectively bad but there was just so much charm to it. Sega games in the late 90's to early 2000's did that a lot lol.

I agree with this. I love that all the characters sounded over the top like an anime dub from the 90s.

virtua fighter is for better or for worse one of the only viewtiful joes left
much love and respect to series like tekken and dead or alive, but i believe virtua fighter is one of the only 3d fighting game series left that has not incorporated 2d fighting game mechanics into their games, such as meters or ultimate attacks
virtua fighter as a result does feel like the most pure 3d fighting game series left to me
we love aoi

....I want to post my long, storied history with VF but right now on words I'm uncharacteristically minimal for wutevR reasons. grindin on games n blastbumpin new music but.... avoiding chats or posts except with the handful of friends I've had for decades. idk wut meh problem is lol but I expect to return n hope to return n, among other shit, find this thread weLL. if not I'LL yell my obnoxious Virtua Fighter opinionage from meh roof to puzzled neighbors xD

I main Kage, Wolf, Taka-Arashi, n Eileen. El Blaze seems to come natural to me, also I guess.

I'll never forget trying out the demo for the first time.

My sister and I played it so often and so much that we even destroyed the disc through sheer overuse. And we even invented our own lore as we went along.

In 2016, I tried VF2 on an emulator (Model 2 Emulator) and loved it. I'm terrible at FG, but it has its charms.

After that, I tried the others (1, 3tb, 4 Evo, and recently VF5 Final Showdown).

My favorite characters are Wolf Hawkfield; grappling is satisfying. Jacky Bryant is fast and easy to use (it's weird that the main character (Akira Yuki) is the hardest to master).

I'd like to try REVO, although I have the money, but I don't have the minimum requirements to run it on PC.

I really need to play 3tb and 4 Evo one of these days. Getting VF5 on a whim for $5 back in the day was what really started my love for the series. I used to buy so many $5 previous gen games from local stores. Saved so much money being a system or two behind everyone else lol.

I've been on the fence a while though because I have no idea who I'd play. El Blaze doesn't exist in the earlier entries and I never did completely gel with any of the VF2 cast. I'm sure I'll get around to it eventually.

VF5 has a huge cast too.

I played VF4 evo once at an arcade with a friend who is allegedly experienced in fighting games. I picked Aoi because she was the cutest character and managed to get a surprising number of matches on my friend.

Until she picked Aoi too and kicked my ass using her lol.
Would like to play more sometime and I probably will with the girlfriend.

Played all of them up through 4 and I don't believe I've encountered 5 anywhere. I really liked the first two, but that was also when I had more time to sit down with them. 4 seemed like it was really solid but I never got a chance to really dive in. But they're all fun, even if I'm not great at them.

Big Shenmue fan but I feel like I should be playing Virtua Fighter more. I got SUPER into 5 and 2 and I've messed with 1 some but 3 and 4 are definitely a blind spot for me. I play Akira to rep my Hazuki boy 😅
