Not even joking one bit. Although it may have started 10 years ago as a funny meme of sort with Floral Shoppe by Machintosh Plus in 2011 and the infamous リサフランク420 / 現代のコンピュー, the world wasn't the same, and it wasn't the same even for me.
The music that transcended this subgenre of electronic music, with it's infinite samples and their way of introducing themselves to new listeners was way ahead of its time. Certain albums even went ahead to become mainstream, to the point where the works of Blank Banshee have been recognised worldwide for their incredible fusion and blend of trap music along with the luscious waves of vaporwave, leading to the birth of vaportrap.
As time went by, and as I grew older, along with my tastes, I guess I went into a flourishing of some sorts, where my tastes led me to discover more underground artists, that further shaped me. And that is mostly why I find the vaporwave genre magic in that aspect, at least for me. You see, I was a huge metalhead when I started highschool. I just listened to that stuff through and through, and I basically went through all the stages a metalhead would go to. Cornering oneself to just the genre, exploring the small varieties, trying to be as brutal as possible... and then going ahead to just listening to whatever comes to mind (CALIFORNIA GIRLS, WE'RE UNFORGETTABLE). This shift of exploring new genres only happened with these two genres, and those are metal and vaporwave. I do listen to almost everything nowadays, I don't have the same tastes as I used to have before, but I never delved that deep into pop, or into reggae, or even jazz. But just these two genres? Oh yes, yes indeed pal.
Nothing made me scratch my brain tho as hard as vaporwave when it comes to hidden gems that made me legit cry and bowl my eyes out, thinking about the beauty of such songs that could exist, or that even went ahead to just make me drift into places of my mind that I didn't know could exist. It was truly an experience. And what I'm trying to say here is... that as long as a song, an album, or a motif is laying in your head, and it bounces from time to time, remember that that music isn't dead.
