Its more like XCOM than Fire Emblem, but the first game is really good. I love the painterly cel shaded style of the graphics that was in vouge in the late 2000s. I really enjoyed the first one. The story was a really interesting fictional take on WW1/WW2. I have a hard time getting into the sequels, since I feel like they lost the historical grounding for the plot and went harder into the tropes.

I get the impression they became less ambitious when they moved the series to the PSP instead of the PS3. Most game companies just put less effort into handheld games than console games.

Scouts are so damn overpowered, they literally break the game, even if you don't take the Valkyria approach.

I have VC1 and 4, and love them both. Both games have a great cast, but what I especially like in 4 is how the squad are real childhood friends and not just a bunch of strangers who were forced together by circumstance, as is usually the case in RPGs, including 1.

Although, I will say I prefer Welkin to Klaus. With Klaus, I can't help but wonder WHY he was put in command of a squad, considering he never really demonstrates any leadership qualities. He seems really submissive to everyone, and doesn't demonstrate any knowledge that would make him an ideal field commander (sure, he wins plenty of battles, but that's only with the player's input. Welkin, at least, demonstrated knowledge of the terrain in cutscenes, which made him an exceptional tactician. And we see him take charge when there's tension in his squad).

Actualy one of my favorite franchises ever.

Finished VC 1 multiple times and even platinum it on PS4. Great game but definitely did not aged so gracefully on a technical aspect and lacks content outside the main story and hard mission but will be fun for its 25 ~ 30 hours of gameplay.

Setting is cool and characters are nice but, aside from the main cast, the rest of the squad is barely developed save some of the one who got popular after release (they even got a DLC!) and some voice lines when activating skills while depoyed (this was fixed with Squad Stories on VC4)

For your consideration:
Scouts are busted.
Use Orders.
Retry as soon you see a situation that is too complicated or time consuming do deal with. It will save you time.

I love the first game a lot and I'm playing the second one now and liking it too, and yeah i would recommend the game, it's really fun, even if it's not really that balanced, at least every class had their small moments to shine and it's fun when it happens, some orders are pretty busted for most of the game so don't forget to use them
