Does anyone else know this game? I read it's going to get a remake and now it has piqued my interest. Does anyone have experience with this game please tell me about it?

I know about the game and tried to play it way way way back but for some reason I never got in to it I think I was rather young then and could not understand it so much so lost interest in it. I still do have my copy. Just need to get off my ass to play it.

It’s super obtuse but very fun. The game has a turtorial hidden in the menus and I strongly reccomend reading it before really getting into the meat of the game

Yeah, it's great. Basically a hardcore, real-time third-person dungeon crawler with puzzles, with an intriguing story in the background. It's not as hard as people say though, you just have to pay attention thinks like weapon types and crafting, and use status-enhancement spells a lot (seriously, boost your power).

What kind of combat system does it have? Turn-based or you just hit the opponent ?

Square going full hard in remakes for their forgotten series? I'll buy into that. I don't care if I'm killing innovation or "Progress" Final Fantasy needs to take a long hard look in the mirror of what it wants to be or what to follow old properties need to shine to prove there's more in the vault.

Best to take a look. No story and no major spoiler. But it kind of reminds me of Parasite Eve with how you target but open no battle zone as it's full a dungeon with no waiting or turns. Oh I guess active battle or action based is the answer you're looking for?

My brother and I used to play this game but wasn't even to finish it. Its one of the hardest game in the PSX back in the day. The unique battle system and equipment sets it apart among the other games back in the day. Truly a masterpiece I'd say. The atmosphere, the story and the dialogue was one of the best in the PSX. I'm gonna give this gem spin when I'm done with some of my backlogs in my VN list.

It had a weird gameplay gimmick to it. And story was very vague to me. I also got stuck somewhere without being able to climb out. Well game most know for having cool customization for weapon and armor.

OK, this is a tactical combat system. It was clear because the game has role-playing elements as you would expect from squaresoft.

vagrant story may be the most graphically impressive game on the platform

just look how subtly her hair moves
for in-engine cinematics on the original playstation it blew my mind
Yes interesting, I thought when I first saw it that it was comic style.

It has a very unorthodox battle system, but the hardest part is that some enemies need a specific type of weapon to be able to get a hit. The story and the graphics are what I'm playing this game for.

Definitely not an RPG I’d recommend to a beginner. Very slow burner this one. I remember getting into the game but being overwhelmed when there was a part were the game explains the gameplay mechanics. The mechanics were far to in depth and i gave up. It is a game i will replay again someday though

As I understand all the comments now, this game seems to be really challenging! That's good, hmm a new game candidate for me. Thanks guys for your opinions .

I finished this game 100% and it's completely worth it. As difficult as it might seem, the reality is the opposite. You will encounter 2 or 3 boss battles which will make it challenging but the rest of the game is quite easy but a lot of fun, if you like the slow paced RPG's.

But to make it less frustrasting you need to invest time in this one. The real things that matter are "dummies" and equiping 3 attack skills you are comfortable with for chain, then everything will be a piece of cake.

A remake of vagrant story will be interesting to see; I wonder if Square Enix will keep the character design, combat and difficulty intact.

Yeah who knows, maybe the story will be even darker than it already is. Will definitely be exciting.

I doubt they'll remake VS, maybe just a remaster.

But still, its one of my fav games in the PSX, its atmosphere is increbible. I really like the evolution system of the weapons, read the game tutorial about it, you can make super busted weapons, so, so fun!
The art style is great

Yes, a remaster with some quality of life improvements makes a lot more sense.

It is one of the ps1 titles that I was most involved in and loved the most...the mechanism of weapons and their affinities is the key to success.

Unfortunately, leaving this specific combat system wouldn't work nowadays. Too slow, difficult and not "fancy". I can tell you by experience and talking to a few people about the game, the chain battle system is something they would change. I can admit myself the first time I played it was kind of frustrating because I expected something very different, but after some time I started loving it. Specially when you're fit to it, but that "some time" can't be wasted by kids nowadays.

This game is an oddball for sure and nowadays it's beauty is literally this, I think. A remake would need to strip it down of all obtuse mechanics and tbh, would turn it into a pretty average game. At the same time the confusing and obtuse mechanics are a thing that makes people stay away from this, it's the meat of the game. It's like to remove the difficulty gameplay of From Software titles.

The mechanics really aren't that obtuse. There are three weapon types IIRC (blunt, sharp, piercing, something like that), and different enemies are vulnerable to different weapons. It's not that hard to figure out which. You can dissemble weapons and put together better ones. And status enhancement spells are great. That's about all you need to know.
