Is there an update or revision to a game that you thought made the game worse? Maybe one of your favorite glitches was patched out? Or perhaps your favorite song in the game was lost after the developers lost the license to use it? Or maybe you played a live service game that changed dramatically over the course of its many seasons? I wanted to keep this question open-ended for interpretation.

An example of an update that made a game worse for me personally is:

The Player's Choice version of Metroid Prime. "Scan-Dashing", which was used to sequence break the game at a few points, was removed in this revision. Additionally, some doors, such as the door leading to the grapple beam, were made to be locked until you acquire power bombs in this version of the game, further limiting the number of sequence breaks that are possible. The game loads slower in this version, too! I still love Metroid Prime, but I play the original NA release when possible.

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin

Some good changes were made but the enemy placement is terrible. More enemies everywhere without any thought put behind it. Iron Keep is the worst. Also, more petrified statues in places they don't belong. Those two things keep it from being better than the original.

EDIT: everything

Just now finishing up Star Ocean:The Last Hope

Some stuff was changed in the 4K Remaster. I picked it because late game there's a lot of disc switching in the og 360 version if you're collecting mats for item creation.

Anyway, this version nerfed two characters' crit chance, AND changed the listing in some of the items so certain factors can't be negated if you want good abilities on your weapons and armor. A goddamn travesty. Apparently they hate fun.

what a funny perspective
"oh no don't let me do game breaking glitching exploits anymore it's ruined"
Absolutely love when ppl complain about bugfixes. Like, either try to get better so you don't need the bug or don't complain cuz you're not a speedrunner that needs to abuse it lmao

Every re release of the PS2 GTA trilogy, not only we have less music but also less effects, worse graphics and more bugs 🫠. Also the update of GTA 4 that erased the Russian radio killing all the immersion.
Razor Edge is kinda also a worse version than the original in certain aspects like the bosses being more harder but they did not balance the bosses to that change, the final boss and the T-Rex are a good proof of that.

sequence breaks & exploits of that sort make many games more interesting for longer periods. it's not like an item dupe glitch you'd have to ignore, it's new ways to play the game.

unless you really want to argue gunz the duel would be a better game with no animation cancelling lol

Fckin GTA 4, the versions used in the Rockstar Games Launcher got rid of like 20 tracks, removed multiplayer, no mod support and worse performance. Basically everyone has to use the downgrade if they get the game legit.
It just doesn't hit the same if Roman's taxi isn't playing Schweine when he pulls up in the opening cutscene :(

The sequence breaks in Metroid do not "break the game". They are just another way you can route your playthrough in terms of item collection. They did fix a few soft-locks in later versions, but I liked having the extra options for how I can play the game.

If you have a better title name that still gets the point across, I'm all ears. Maybe "Games that were made worse by updates?"

EDIT: Changed the title of the thread to better portray the question.

OFF's 2.1 English translation removes Dedan's swearing, considering his gimmick is rudeness in general, it removes the punch

Also look how they massacred my boys

i will get burn to a crisp, but Crash's jump being heavier and 100% being Relic-enforced on the entire trilogy (Read: the game just told you LEARN TO SPEEDRUN JACKASS) made the N.Sane trilogy a turn off for me

Definitely Helldivers 2. They devs nerfed the weapons to shit to the point that it made playing on harder difficulties neigh impossible. If I had to guess, they did it on purpose so that it'll be much harder to get the rare materials for upgrades and force you to have to spend money on their passes (even though I already payed to get the game!).
I haven't played it since they made the shotgun crap, so I can't tell you if they've fixed their blunder since.

Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup is the high god of updates that make the base game worse. What was once a vibrant, exciting dungeon crawler with a deep level of player and world customization has been steadily stripped of all fun and personality in the pursuit of "quality of life". In an effort to service the 1% of players that want nothing except to speedrun the game, loads and loads of interesting items, effects, races, enemies, environments, and mechanics have been straight-up removed, and more are taken out with each update.

Don't expect any opportunities for role-playing or character-building or emergent plot development here – those silly things have been eliminated to make space for smaller floor sizes, barebones enemy types, and, if you're lucky, a new race that immediately self-implodes if the player spends more than 3 turns not progressing towards the next level. If any member of the current development team are reading, I actually have a suggestion for even better QoL: Take out the gameplay, too, and just give the player a "YOU WIN!" message once they hit Start. That would make things very efficient.

One of my all-time favourite mechanics in any game was DCSS's food mechanic, where different races would react differently to different food types – vegetarian races would be disgusted by meat, vampires would only drink blood (carnivores wouldn't turn it down), zombies could feast on flesh and assimilate characteristics of slain enemies into themselves, etc. There was a "pizza" item that every single race in the game had a unique interaction with, randomized by topping type. These days, there is one single "FOOD RATION" item, and the interaction is the same regardless of if your character is a golem or a cat. Go fuck yourselves, dev team.

That sounds so damn sad mane my condolences to all the players

Hatsune Miku MegaMix on the Switch has an update that removes Miku's panties. Just a black void, actually unplayable for me. Its just something im used to slightly see from time to time in the other past games and then they drop this shit? Same with Fairy Tail on the PS4, i have to play it offline to get the actual game experience since the devs worked hard with Hiro Mashima to make sure each girl has different color underwear

Elden Ring. The release version was full of broken builds (Kamehameha wizard, Bloody Slash Virgil etc.) but FromSoft nerfed all of them in the subsequent patches. The release was so wild because of all these and way more fun than what it is right now.

Tales of Symphonia but the 60 FPS is gone and is never coming back

Which is far less bad than Persona 1 but they removed the music, upped the encounters, and removed the unique pause screen

Or Pokemon Black and White with a worse overall story, a forgettable rival and the villain team being back to status quo, which makes Neo Team Plasma boring as shit even next to other villain teams, they don't do anything of note
except for freezing a single town and nothing else

How is BW2 an update to BW when its a direct sequel? USUM is a update, Emerald, Crystal etc.

I stopped playing Binding of Issac because the developers kept bitching about players using overpowered builds—in a game where the item RNG decides what items players get—and started giving bosses the ability to ignore damage after a certain threshold. Like bros, you're getting mad at and reacting to players who post their most OP builds to YouTube. They're not posting all their bad runs, or even their mediocre runs. Just the OP runs.

I enjoyed the game for a long time but the developers are babies.
