Before the era of HD/console DLC, many games packed in straight up, fun, goofy, multiplayer or bonus modes for the hell of it. Nintendo and the indies are really the only ones to bother doing this anymore. Capcom too, but they have a habit of making it either dlc or free contup update later down the line.

Speaking of Capcom, i really wish they would bring back Dramatic Battle (2 player vs. CPU) for SF6. It was a huge staple in the updated Alpha games, but the last time it was ever used was in Ultra Street Fighter II on Switch Dubbed Buddy Battle. That was back in 2017. This is a mode that should have just been in every Street Fighter game afterward.

For those that have a PSP or a proper emulator, get Alpha 3 Max. It has even more crazy bonus modes and has a Reverse Dramatic Battle [Exist in the JPN Saturn version too] (1 player vs. 2 CPU) and even a tag team mode called variable Battle.

Any other bonus modes, you all can think of?

Fat POS mode.

Both Fable: TLC and GTA:SA had an entire mechanic around eating too much food and getting fat. Rockstar leaned into the joke super hard, and had Chris Bellard (aka Young Maylay) record additional lines of fat jokes and weight related dialogue just in the off chance you put on too much weight.
  • I ain't a fat bitch, bitch!
  • I'mma eat you, fool!
  • You lil' bitch!
  • I'mma flatten you, fucker!
  • I'm big, but I ain't slow!
  • You got a problem with the big man, huh!?
  • C'mon, fool, c'mon!
  • I'll put you to sleep, punk!
  • Who you callin' a fat slob?
  • I'mma put you to sleep, punk!
  • I ain't just a fat slob, asshole!
  • You think you can deal with the fat man, huh!?
  • I got weight on my side.
  • Stand still!
  • Hey, there's muscle under this fat, punk!
CJ is also programmed with numerous other additional responses to his own appearance, including when he's wearing a fly ass suit, or when he's mega ripped. But fat CJ is just really funny, so I don't know if I'm asking for the resurgence of Joke modes, or better appearance based gameplay.

Props also goes to the "Doughnut Drake" form in Uncharted, Naughty Dog are cowards for backing down and removing it.

Just let me unlock s*** in games without having to pay for DLC. Please.

Specifically, characters in fighting games. Classics like Tekken 3 and SoulCalibur let you damn near double the entire roster through unlocks. Really made me feel like I earned my way through those games. But those days are long gone

Fighting games going all in on the 'grind online and play tournaments' crowd made the genre so much more boring. I'm glad we've finally started to move away from it a bit, still many examples of that with current releases and Smash remains the last triple A stronghold of actual unlockable characters, but at least Soul Calibur and Street Fighter 6 had actual things to do outside of VS and Online. Have a ton of playtime in Street Fighter 6 just from World Tour.

Also feel a need to recommend Schwarzerblitz, since it's a PSOne style 3d indie fighting game with unlockable characters and costumes, it lets you choose if you want to have everything unlocked right away at first start up, but if you're not a loser you'll choose to earn the full roster and costumes.

In general I wish having bonus side modes at all would come back, like all the random VS modes in single player games, SEGA did that a lot around the Gamecube era with the Sonic games and Billy Hatcher.

Edit: For specific bonus modes: Galactic Conquest (Battlefront II), Super Battle Mode (Mario Party 5), and Chronicles of the Sword (Soul Calibur 3)

I am sorry, fren. The FGC has deemed such practices to slow for their adderall riddled minds to handle. For if I am not online getting bodied with my main in under 16 seconds after install, what is even the point of living?

So, yes. I will be paying for that SSGSS Goku and Vegeta, or Braniac unlock code in Injustice/Fighter Z with real money (in spite of them being unlockable in Arcade/Story) like a total chumb. Laugh at me all you will, but I will be online with them at launch and you will not, so who is the real loser here?

Also, with all the FGC talk, I just thought of all the extra bonus modes in stuff like Tekken and Bloody Roar. Mini games like Tekken Ball (thank you for coming back in TTT2 for WiiU BTW) and stuff like Kids mode, no walls mode, or Perma Beast/Hyper beast would be pretty sick. Getting to play as Dragon Install Sol or Golden Frieza (DBFZ, since games like Tenkaichi let you do that all the time, and DBFZ doesn't have any other proper Super Forms for some reason...) would be pretty fun for a laugh.

I wish unlockables would make a resurgence at some point. I mode I vividly remember was Extra Crisis on Dino Crisis 2 where you can fight as the characters of the first game and the mini Dino fighting arena mode.

A small but unique "unlockable" in some Disgaea games is a complete different mode with a different protagonist. The first game had Etna mode, the second one Axel mode etc... Best part is early on you could unlock them by getting any of the unique bad endings the game has, I lost the fight against the very first boss in D1 and it played a cutscene, the credits and then I could start Etna mode along with recruiting Pleinair right from th start.

Boss Rush modes, i consider bosses the best part of games, so seeing games pass that unlockable feels bummer to me
right? it was insanely frustrating in smash ultimate that this was locked to sephiroth as well. it was literally right there, but they decided to go about it in the most boring way possible.

Speaking on Disgaea... one of my favorite features in 5 was the ability to customize the color of every unit, and in pretty great detail. then in 6 just getting a single bonus color became the most insanely arduous and stupid unlock ever? 7, as good as it was compared to 6, also flubbed this.

I really love customizing colors on things. I used that feature a lot in soul calibur 3, one of the DBZ psp games, Disgaea 5, King of fighters... and some others I'm sure. I feel like it should be a standard feature of any fighting game. Also it's a crime that most equipment in Dragonball xenoverse isn't color customizable.

The latest game that had a boss rush mode in my memory was Sekiro. And yeah, because bosses are the highlight of that game as well as the combat it was a great addition.
